Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PlayStation 3 120GB SystemCustomer Review: Slimmer & Better! Summary: 5 Stars
The new PS3 slim is quite an improvement over the older one in most ways
First, let me tell you that i have owned both systems the orignal 40gb PS3 and this 120gb PS3 slim.
The new ps3 slim is (obviously) lighter, thinner, and more compact overall. On the outside, the ps3 is now a flat black color, which is great for reducing unsightly finger prints. The buttons are no longer touch style (i was disappointed) and are now replaced with regular clicking buttons.
The power scource is much more energy efficient and once you turn it in it actually feels smoother (and quiter) running then the original ps3. I also noticed my slim is much quiter, my original is at least twice as loud as the slim. Both systems play all PS3 games and bluray movies (bluray movies look amazing off the ps3 if you have the right HD equipment!) Some of the older PS3 systems are backwards compatible, the slim is not. So if your dying to play a collection of ps2 games you have, you might wanna go for an older systme that is backwards compatible. But im sure once you start playing ps3 games, you'll totally forget about your PS2 collection!
Inside the ps3 slim is also a HUGE fan...(google it there's plenty of pictures# and thats likely what keeps it cool despite its compact figure. Even after playing some long runs on my ps3 slim, there's not more of a heat output then my orignal. PS3's dont really having a heating problem, leave that to the XBOX 360s. I do have one tip though, some ps3 slim users have been experiencing problems and saying their PS3 slims run hot. To prevent this, look at the power cable, on both ends there is white text on the actual cable, make sure on the side going in the ps3 and in the outlet, that the white text is facing upwards. I have NO clue why this is but it does run cooler when its put that way.
Games are quite amazing and ps3 gameplay doesn't change from the orignal to the slim except for the fact that my ps3 slim loads maybe a second or two faster then my original. Online gaming is still the same, lag-free and fast if you have a high speed connection! #TIP: configure your router if you can to let your ps3 have priority on bandwith, it helps especially when downloading 1GB+ demo's)
Hard drive swapping is still a breeze. A screw here and there and you just pop out the old one and in with the new! My original ps3 is running a 320gb Western Digital drive. If your looking for an adequate sized drive i recommend the Western Digital 320GB Scorpio Blue SATAII 5400RPM 2.5IN 8MB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive WD3200BEVT You can get them for easily under $70 now, i've seen them as low as $50. It runs pretty cool and has lasted
Customer Review: Smaller yet still powerfull Summary: 5 Stars
When I first laid eyes on the new PS3, my thoughts and fears were the same as when the slim PS2 replaced the original PS2: "will it still be as powerful, will it be as reliable, did they cut anything 'minor' without bothering to tell us? Well, my fears were false. It has been a true performer on all counts. I bought two of these for my kids a few weeks ago (one of my older children is away at school). They are having a ball playing games like Little Big Planet, Modern Warfare 2, and Madden. I love the new slim profile. The same PS3 user interface remains. Everything is still in the same place. The only major changes appear to be a thinner power cord and the chassis is smaller and matte instead of big and shiny (although it still has a little weight to it). I prefer the matte because once a smudge got onto the 80GB PS3, I was in for some rubbing. And if it got scuffed (usually from a wayward controller when moving too fast to load a disk or traveling with the PS3), the attractive shiny finish took a nice hit. Some other changes include the loss of the back primary power button, the lights on the front of the console now glow white instead of blue when on, although still red when off. The buttons are also round and the touch-sensitive power button on the front is now a soft push button. The best change from our prior 80GB system is the 120GB hard drive in the base model and the price-drop that ushered it in. Coming from the 80GB, the 120 is more than good enough for us and we have dozens of games. My kids have been playing their PS3's nonstop. We didn't encounter any heating issues with the smaller chassis and even after hours of nonstop game play, the system seems unfazed. It's also quiet, even after hours of nonstop play. Connecting to our protected WIFI router was easy, creating a Playstation account was easy, and playing online...ditto, also easy, and FREE. We connected a bluetooth wireless earpiece to the system and the PS3 installed it quickly and with no issues. HDMI output is amazing on high def sets. We don't use the PS3 primarily for Blu-ray watching because we have a dedicated Blu-ray player, but it doesn't hurt to have options if the primary player is in use at any given time. I also like that HD movies can be played on the PS3 in different formats. If you have HD footage shot with a hard drive camera and don't have a Blu-ray burner, you can still burn disks capable of being played in the PS3. You can even play from USB drives. That's a little much to go into detail here, but easy tutorials can be found with simple web searches. I have no regrets about trading up to the newer PS3. Well, that's just my experience as someone going from the 80GB model to the slim 120GB.
Customer Review: PS3 slim is the same as fat PS3, but its lighter and cooler Summary: 5 Stars
Thought many said you can't install Linux anymore into the PS3 slim, I don't care much cause I never install Linux into my fat PS3 at all. Or can we still I don't know and haven't try it.
So let's talk about the goods.
-Lighter than fat PS3 by 5ibs.
-Finger print can mess with the PS3 slim because the cover have texture that finger prints can't touch it.
-PS3 slim is better than PS3 fat just like PS2 slim was better than PS2 fat.
-Flat and not fat.
-The power cord is smaller and easier to plug in hell yeah!!
-It doesn't have the back switch anymore like the fat PS3 and fat PS2, you can shut it down and once it turn red light, you can unplug the power cord if you don't intent to play for a long period of time, Sony state it in the manual. PS2 slim also don't have the back switch as well.
-Everything else is still PS3 and that's good.
The a bit kind of bad thing was that you can't touch the front buttons to power on and cover it for 3 seconds to turn it off anymore and the reset button can be touch as well, you got to push the buttons now.
BUT it's not even a big deal, why?
Because the DS3 controller is all you need. Want to turn on the PS3, just push the PS button on the controller. Want to turn off the PS3, just shut it down from the PS3 users top or hold the PS button 3 seconds and when the options come up, scroll down to shut the system off, easy and simple.
I will update my review when I know more about the PS3 slim like can we still install Linux or other programs in.
Blu-ray movies look awesome so anyone who want a Blu-ray player and want a game system, PS3 slim is all you need. You don't have to buy a [...] to [...] Blu-ray player, PS3 slim can do all that and even play PS3 games as well.
I recommend to anyone who want a PS3, get the PS3 slim, its awesome. PS3 also have some awesome games and some more awesome games will come out too.
Note to the fanboys on both side, PS3 and X360, both PS3 and X360 are awesome so fanboys need to stop their biases toward each others and play the games you guys like and stop hating on other console.
Update: 10/8/09
Got it for a month and a couple of days now, still run as fine as brand new.
One thing I want to said to people is that, never play games more than 8 hrs in one sitting.
Let the PS3 rest for 30 mins before playing again, just want to tell people save energy and save the PS3 blu-ray disc drive. Also save your TV as well.
I know you guys might know it already, but I'll just let you guys know anyway in case some people don't know.
Customer Review: PS3 Slim: This time the right way! Summary: 5 Stars
The new PS3 slim just arrived at my house yesterday, and I was immediatly impressed. I owned a launch day 60GB PS3, and loved that machine, and have about 20+ games. I sold the 60GB PS3 when I saw leaked chinease pictures. On with the review!
Upon opening the Amazon box for the PS3 slim, I immediatly was taken back by the retro packaging, notably the new "old" logo, PlayStation 3 logo. Nice refresh from the copycat Spiderman 3 font, which I was very tired of, and was originally dissapointed they changed to that font in the first place. I am an old school playstation fan from the SNES CD days in Nintendo Power. Bought an original Playstation back in the day in 1996 too. Where you had to get your Twisted Metal fix with the machine upside down.
Case Design:
I love the new PS3, the case design is fantastic. The plastic feels much more solid that the clear acrilyc of the original PS3. There is no door to break off for the card ports. It doesn't weigh 11 pounds either! It is also very stable laying flat on the entertainment center. It does not feel cheap at all. I love the new fingerprint free finish. The new non touch buttons are much better in my opinion, they give you some feedback that the button was pressed. Very nice. The power cable is also the smaller "laptop style" 2 wire cable. No external power brick to hide like 360 or PS2 slim either. I'm glad they made the system a little deeper to accomadate an internal power supply.
Overall Case design compared to original PS3 design: 9/10 Very good
Really that is the only difference realistically from the old PS3 and the new Slim.
Bottom line:
If you do not develop programs for the Cell architecture, Linux support is not really necessary. Also the Card reader slots were hardly ever used, and two USB ports are perfectly fine. I've heard reports of the BD-Rom being slower in the Slim vs Phat. However I didn't notice anything, but I wasn't timing load times either. I find the reports of the drive being slower suspect. I doubt the drive is the reason since I can't believe it is anything but a 2X drive just like the old one.
I would recommend the new PS3 Slim for everyone except the most hardcore 1337 gamers out there that have tons of stuff hooked up to their PS3 and are trolling message boards from their PS3 running linux on their 24" Monitor. LOL
But seriously, this PS3 is very good. I would recommend the Slim over the 80GB old version, if you are struggling with a decision. If you are casual, don't buy a used 60GB PS3, buy a new Slim.
Thanks for reading my rant!
Customer Review: The best value for the price Summary: 5 Stars
Many of the other 4 and 5 star reviews have hit on the main points of this new PS3, yes its smaller, thiner and quiter then the previous model but what is lost on new buyers is how big of a deal this all is. When you read about the PS3 slim and its features it makes you think that the original PS3 must have been some poorly designed mess, when that could not be further from the truth. Part of what makes the new PS3 so amazing is that Sony was able to take all the great features of the PS3 like Blu-ray, WiFi, Free On line gaming, mind blowing graphics (from Sony's first party titles anyway), Full 1080p HD and HDMI and shrink it down to this size in just under 3 years. The PS3 was always a great value its just now an even greater value in a smaller more energy efficent package. The new exterior design is great as well, the mostly matte finish keeps finger prints and dust from being a eyesore while still adding subtle touches like back lit power and eject buttons that have hidden LED's when in use. The over all design is very user frinedly, and makes it easier to touch and use the system.
Also when compairing both HD consoles the PS3 becomes an even bigger value:
PS3 - 299.99 comes with:
Blu-ray - standard
HDMI 1.3 - standard
Hard Drive - standard and fully/easily upgraded with any Laptop hard drive
WiFi - Standard
Wireless rechargeable bluetooth controller - standard
Network gaming access - Free
now compare Xbox 360 (black model, white arcade unit is further stripped down)
Blu-ray - NOT AVAILABLE
HDMI - Standard on newer models
Hard Drive - Standard on black units $80 to $180 extra for White Arcade units, not upgradeable with anything but Microsoft branded Hard drives.
WiFi - $80 to $100 extra
Wireless controller - Yes but the controller DOES NOT come with a recharageable battery, so add an aditional $20 to $30 for rechargeable battery and device to recharge it(depending on which option you choose)
Network Gaming Access - 49.99 a year for gold membership otherwise you can not access content or play most games online.
Do the math, PS3 costs 299.99 and includes everything you need to get started.
Xbox 360 costs $480.00 to $500.00 just to offer SOME of what the PS3 does right out of the box at no aditional cost to you. Then factor in that the 360 will NEVER be able to play Blu-ray movies and that the hardware is still unreliable. In this economy getting more for less is important and the PS3 has that in spades.
