Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PlayStation 3 120GB SystemCustomer Review: Great with improvments! Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, I got my slim before anyone else because I know people at Sony. I have to say I'm very impress with this console. I still prefer the PS3 over the 360 elite. This console is not the best PS3 console. My favorite console is still the 60 GB. This console is better than the current 80 GB and 160 GB consoles. Now let me say the pros and cons.
1. Small and compact(about the size of a fat PS2{thinner but wider}).
2. Quite and reliable like the old PS3, and run quiter and better now accually.
3. The new Matte finish is no longer a fingerprint magnet(and a Piano Black skin like the old PS3s will be available within the next two monthes).
4. The old style PS2 and PSP logos are Back in Black.
5. Now you can replace your hard drive without breaking the warrenty.
6. Duelshock 3(the only reason I listed this is becuse I only have 2 Sixaxis contollers that don't vibrate like the Duelshock 3 controller).
1. NO linux( this was already with me because It still has a free internet browser).
2. Only 2 USB ports(don't worry you can still have four contollers, this is only bad with Rockband and Guitar Hero because the controllers take up an HDMI port when in use).
3. No PS2 Backwards Compatability (this not a major problem because people if want a PS2 go out and buy a used one at Game Stop for only $29).
This is a great system for the price. I still prefer my 60GB PS3 over this but it is a grat value for a Blu Ray Player and gaming system. And if you're a parent this is a great system for the family that you can watch movies and play great family games such as Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Gran Trismo 5, Motorstorm, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, and Rachet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. This is one of my favorite consoles of all time making my top 3 which was previously
1. PS2
2. 60GB PS3
3. Game Boy Advance SP(I don't know why but I always loved this system)
but now its
1. PS2
2. 60GB PS3
3. 120GB PS3 slim
Thank you sony for delivering on nearly everysingle Playstion model. I don't care if you only have a 360 or wii, get this system. Dispite the name I am not biased. Infact I had a wii and 360 and PS3 all at one time but I got an RRoD on my 360 sold it and then desided to sell my wii because there weren't any quality games for it. But any way I give this amazing system 5 stars!!!!!
Customer Review: Great gaming console/media center but not without some negatives. Still a 9 out of 10 though! Summary: 5 Stars
First and far most, I finally decided to get the newest PS3 version to play great video games. A couple years ago with the high PS3 price and less great selection of games, I wouldn't think about getting PS3 yet. However now is a great time to get the latest version PS3 for the price, durability, more energy efficient (less heat should mean less chance of failure) and the great selection of video games out now. Here are just some of the great positives for the the newest PS3. 1. First time I used it, I was very happy to notice that it is so quiet. No loud fan or noise! I heard some older PS3 sounded too loud. This PS3 is good for watching movies without hearing noise in background. 2. My main reason to get PS3 was great selection of games such as Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Red Dead Redemption and the list goes on and on. And the prices for games are becoming very reasonable now. You don't have to pay $59.99. 3. It really is a great blu-ray and dvd player. It makes my regular DVDs look amazing. This is a big reason to get PS3 for its dvd and blu-ray capabilities. I will be buying a blu-ray remote though just for convenience. 4. It has built-in wifi, the internet and playstation network for free. 5. Put movies, pictures and videos on it but I really didn't even try that. 6. Stream netflix movies on it. Sure the netflix streaming selection is pretty bad but once in a while you can find some good movie on it. It is nice to have. Now, I will talk about the negatives. 1. I thought the internet would be better but the browser is set up weird with no website address on top (really?), slower and lot of sites have trouble showing up i guess to adobe flash as I tried to watch videos and the flash doesn't support this device. And because I don't like the internet on PS3 much, I won't waste money on a PS3 keyboard so I am stuck typing with a PS3 controller. Yes, it is annoying and difficult to type fast on a PS3 controller. Part of the reason why I can't even see myself having any decent conversation on Playstation Home. The Playstation Home simply isn't for me anyways but maybe it is for some other people. I would love to see the PS3 fix their browser to make it somewhat like a regular computer. I think the playstation store is nice to have but too expensive and small selection of movies. I will use the internet browser once in a while but don't think PS3 will replace your use of a laptop or pc. I still think internet as a "bonus" of the PS3 as I didn't get the PS3 because of the internet feature. I really got it for the great video games!
Customer Review: Gorgeous, Inside & Out!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to start this review by saying I own an Xbox 360 Elite, and just sold my 40gb PS3. I heard about the PS3 slim and thought I'd give it a try. I play alot of Xbox, and will admit I'm on my 3rd, thanks to the RRoD. I didn't play my 40gb PS3 very often, until Little Big Plant came out...that's the game that got me hooked on PS3.
After selling my 40gb model, I decided to run out and grab a PS3 slim. I was literally in awe when the sales associate handed me the new thin, light box. I rushed home, and unpacked the box, this thing is seriously small. It weighs close to nothing when compared to the classic design.
I must say this thing is a piece of art! The design is amazing, I was never a fan of the shiny black PS3, it collected fingerprints and showed every spec of dust. The matte black on this unit paired with the mirrored disc front bevel is gorgeous. I must also add the new "push" buttons are much more functional and the white back lit buttons are extremely slick looking.
Now onto the internal functionality. The PS3 has always been a solid built machine, and this model is no different, despite the new thinner, lighter form factor this thing is still solid. I turned it on and set up the wireless connection, which is a great feature, considering I have this installed in my bedroom. I put in a Blu Ray and sat back, just as I suspected, gorgeous picture on my 46" Sony Bravia. I never thought my 40gb unit was loud, sometimes the initial disc start up buzzed a bit but nothing to take away from your viewing enjoyment. This one is completely dead silent.
I must say this model is a 100% improvement over the previous design...until I turned on Bravia Sync. My TV instantly recognized the connection, labeled my HDMI 1 input as "PlayStation 3" and added a favorite icon labeled PS3. I think this is one of my favorite features hands down! My TV remote now fully controls my PS3 and TV, and even automatically turns on my PS3 when I select its input, or turns on the TV when I press the power button on the PS3.
To wrap this up, I must say this is an excellent product, I've always been a Sony fan, and have owned nothing but Sony TVs, Audio Receivers, etc. I have a good feeling with this new design and 100 dollar price drop Sony made a good choice...but, it wont stop me from enjoying Xbox too. Both of the consoles bring so much to the table...you're cheating yourself if you don't take time to enjoy the features and fun of both systems.
Customer Review: Game, video, internet - All in one. Summary: 5 Stars
First I will note that we bought this at a local store since almost every place was out of them at the time. We wanted a second PS3 for our bedroom, so we could watch our collection of BluRay discs and play games if desired. Having a second unit also allows the kids to play while not in the family room - so we can watch something and they can go hide and play.
We have one of the original 60Gb PS3s and now the 120Gb slim. The original is quiet, shiny, and bulky. The slim is a bit loud, not so bulky, and the matte finish is great. In regards to looks, it looks 10x better. Function, it is nearly identical for our uses - play PS3 games, and watch BluRay movies. The new vibrating controller is cool. And of course, the bigger hard drive is a factor, but I doubt we will get near the threshold of either system any time soon. But as noted the new Slim unit is a bit louder. And being in the bedroom, that is an annoyance. The fan is louder - probably due to the smaller size. It is not overwhelming, but louder nonetheless. And the disc tray is much louder. Entering and ejecting a disc in the original PS3 is almost silent. Doing the same in a Slim is like using dial up internet. It lets out a loud, mechanical sound. Of course, these louder components do not deter from the quality of the product and the joy our family will get out of it.
BluRay is great, the list of games is growing, and the quality of those games is expanding as well. Sony is even getting into some TV shows dedicated specifically for the PS3/PS Store like the reality show, The Tester. Of course, we would love for the PS3 to allow Hulu and some other online sources of shows, but it does play NetFlix.
So for the price of consoles that only allow gaming, or only allow NetFlix, or only allow DVD, the PS3 is worth every penny. It allows an abundance of features all in one box. And to be honest, you can't really go wrong with the new Slim version or a refurbished original PS3. Neither one stands out above the other.
One other note, the PS3 is definitely made for an HDTV. We only have an old SDTV in our bedroom. Playing games and watching BluRay on our HDTV in the family room is awe-inspiring. Doing the same on the SDTV is not so grand. In fact, subtitles in some movies and games is impossible to read on the SDTV. And brightness has to be adjusted quite a bit to be able to play some games.
Customer Review: Short PS3 Review & Thoughts Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this 120Gb Slim PS3 simply for the fact my old 80Gb PS3 died after updating to the latest firmware from Sony. It lasted me 3 years and as much as I used it in the past year I say it served me well although I still blame Sony for killing it...R.I.P. old 80 Gigger.
So on to my thoughts of the 120Gb Slim, Nothing really different as far as playing PS3 games and watching Blu-Ray movies. All are the same as the old PS3 models EXCEPT the Slims do not have 4 USB ports in the front for accessories as some of the older PS3 models did. This is no real big deal cause you can use a USB hub to get additional ports.
The Slims do not support backwards compatibility for PS2 games but says it will play SOME PS(one) original games. This is no big deal for me either, I did not have any PS2 games to play except one. As expected though, if you want to play some PS2 games you may be able to find them on the Playstation Store to buy(you know Sony has to keep making money somehow).
Last thing I can think of at this time the new Slims do not offer is the option in the XMB to add another operating system such as Linux Yellow Dog. Also not a big deal to me cause I have other computers in the house I can use instead of the PS3 as most normal people do. Really, what is the purpose for another operating system, not like you can do a lot on the PS3 with another operating system. I bought my PS3 to play games and watch movies. It is not intended for me to take place of an actual computer... IT IS A GAMING CONSOLE.
So bottom line is I like the 120Gb Slim, I wanted the larger hard drive but I can buy a larger hard drive at a later time and install it myself. It is quieter than my old PS3, plays games and movies the same as the older PS3 did too. I also like the matte finish, the whole look is more pleasant on the eyes than the old PHAT PS3. My whole family loves watching Blu-ray movies on it as well as instantly streaming movies from Netflix.
My only big concern is this, IF Sony killed my old PS3 with a firmware update that caused the Blu-ray drive to only be able to read regular DVD's and Cd's and not Blu-ray movies or games(all PS3 games are on Blu-ray BTW) then will they end up coming out with a newer design for the PS3 again and releasing an update to kill the current Slims?? I do think that Sony deliberately did this to get people to buy the newer Slims.
