Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PlayStation 3 120GB System

Customer Review: Rather impressive...
Summary: 5 Stars

I had not really bothered with the PS3 before (mainly because of the cost) Now that the PS3 slimline is available for $[...] I decided to order one. I was able to add MediaTomb to my main Ubuntu computer to allow it to be used as a "media server" for the PS3 in about 15 minutes and was able to play music, videos, and photos from my home computer. That was something that I was not originally expecting to be able to do. (I was getting it mainly for games and to play Blu-Ray movies)
I downloaded about a dozen demo games the first night and will check out the demos before plunking down cash on the full versions of games. The wireless controller is nice but I opted to use wires for ethernet connection leaving the wireless free for the laptops... (wired is generally faster anyway)
I do not care too much for the built in browser but I was able to go to Netflix with it and add a few instant movies to my queue for playing with the Roku box. (I tried to play some hulu content but unfortunately it appears they are blocking the PS3)
I only bought one game and have not played many games with it but am very happy with the video quality hooked up to 1080p tv. (I do not have surround sound system so can not comment on those capabilites yet.)
I could easily see a "non-computer type" person using a PS3 as their main computer once they hooked a USB keyboard to it. If you use it as a media center, home computer, DVD / Blu-Ray player, etc it is not a bad value... I really would like PS2 compatibility and the ability to load Linux on it... but oh well...
I will probably stick to the PS2 in the RV anyway since it uses a LOT less power than the PS3 (especially when running it off 12 volt DC batteries using an inverter...)
To whoever else was asking.. YES it appears that a load click or two when ejecting a disc appears to be "normal."
I wish the software supported listening to music AND using the photo / slideshow stuff at the same time.... (but what do you want for $[...]...)
It does NOT come with an HDMI cable so go to monoprice or someplace else to get one for less than $[...] unless you want to give best buy or somebody a couple twenties...

Customer Review: Great multi purpose system
Summary: 5 Stars

The PS3 is a great gaming system with excellent graphics, a bluray player, media sharing, and streaming capability. Currently, the top 3 blu ray players for around $300 - $500 are the OPPO BDP83, LG BD390, and believe it or not the PS3. This is based off of tests performed by CNET. They use calibration discs and video stress test to see how well players on the market perform.

The OPPO got the best ratings and focuses on picture and audio quality but not streaming capabilities. The LG BD390 can stream Netflix and YouTube. There is a free disc available from Netflix or an update through the PS3 network that you can use to stream Netflix instant movies. Only downfall with the disc is that it has to be in the PS3 every time you stream a movie. If you want to be able to stream Netflix and Youtube you can purchase an application called Play On which allows you to do this.

I also have the PS3 synced with my Windows Media Center where I can access pictures, movies, and music from my PC's library. Of course the computer has to be on to do this. It was very easy syncing all of the programs to communicate with my PS3.

The PS3 does a great job of up converting standard DVDs. The colors are very brilliant and a bit richer then my BD390. However, the bluray picture is richer on the BD390 then the PS3 as well as the audio quality.

Since the game controllers are bluetooth, a standard IR sensor universal remote will not be able to control the PS3. You can use the game controller to power on/off the system as well as control every function. You can purchase a bluetooth remote from various manufacturers if you strive for the comfort of a regular remote when watching a movie. Also, there is a universal remote like the Logitech Harmony remote that has an adapter you can purchase that will allow you to control every function on the PS3 as well.

When comparing the new PS3 with the older PS3, the most obvious is the push button power and eject buttons on the new PS3 vs. the touch buttons on the older model, a dull black finish vs. a glossy piano black finish, and no power switch on the back like the older models have.

Customer Review: The greatest single piece of electronics ever built
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a gadget guy and have been a gamer since the Atari 2600 which was released on my 10th birthday. I have seen the evolution of gaming and can appreciate the days of Combat, Circus, and Tempest. I love to game, but for anyone on the fence as to whether they should get the PS3 or the XBOX360 - listen up. The PS3 is not a gaming console. It is an incredible multimedia center that happens to play ridiculously good games. I had the PS3 for 3 months before I ever put a game into it and I was completely entertained anyway.

To begin, the BlueRay disc player is top notch. I love that it is a direct drive and not a tray loader. Much cooler and you never have to worry about an annoying tray bumping up against a cabinet door or breaking. Let's face it, the less moving parts, the better. Always the case. What I love about the PS3 mostly is that it connected to my home network perfectly and with very little effort on my part. It automatically detected my home media server and allows me to stream music, photos, and videos from my home server where we keep all of our media files. It's just a smart machine that is capable of doing it all.

If you are in the market to purchase a BlueRay player, get the PS3. It will play your BlueRay disks better than any other player out there and that only represents about 20% of what this device can do for you. now that I have played a few games on it, i can say that the graphics are stunning and the games they are releasing for it are amazing. Just got to you tube and look at the trailers for Heavy Rain which is a game set to be released in 2010 aimed at adult audiences.

This is a full encompassing media center that is a perfect addition to any home theater system and is a great system for gamers or non gamers. SONY really gambled on this device and they did the right thing. We all worried that Blue Ray would fail, as did the beta back in the 80's, but BlueRay won over HD and this system is by far the best bang for the buck over anything else out there. Bravo SONY - and thank you for creating this thing.

Customer Review: Upgrade Complete
Summary: 5 Stars

I FINALLY upgraded to a PS3 this Christmas and I am incredibly happy I did. While I have always and WILL always love my PS2 I had to see what the PS3 was all about.

The new system offers so many applications and possibilities that the PS2 never could. The online system is fun, though I don't use it as often as many do. I enjoy being able to surf the net and have direct play from Netflix. I also love the PlayStation store for upgrades for certain games.

The size of the console seemed normal to me, though many still complain that it's large. The PS2 wasn't the smallest console and this model is no different. The Slim model is obviously smaller and uses far less energy than the larger PS3. It doesn't make a sound while running. There's no sound of fans, lasers moving, etc.

I would have to say my favorite addition is the wireless controller. I love that you can turn the console on and off through the controller and that some games (such as "Lair") use the Sixaxxis to it's fullest capacity. My only complaint would be how you charge them. If you don't spend the money on a charging pad you have to use a short USB cable that comes with the console. While you can still play a game while charging you have to sit close enough so you don't pull it off your TV.

The graphics on the PS3 are wonderful. Every game I've played (Assassin's Creed 1 & 2, Eternal Sonata, Lair, Little Big Planet, etc.) are beautifully created with graphics that often suggest they could step out of your screen they look so real. The sound if also amazing.

The only other complaint I would have about the PS3 Slim is it's matte finish. I do appreciate that it doesn't collect fingerprints like the larger models shines finish did, but the new finish is textured and therefore holds dust way too well.

Overall the PS3 gets 5/5 stars. I would rate it higher if I could. I have been completely happy with the new console and often wonder what the heck took me so long when it came to buying it...oh...that's right...it used to cost $600.

Customer Review: Our new entertainment machine!
Summary: 5 Stars

We recently bought a Sony Bravia 40 inch HDTV. But after switching all the cables and such, our DVD player had to be tossed, so we started looking for a new one. Naturally, a PS3 was our top choice. It upstreams DVD's to near HD quality and plays Blu-ray DVD's. Plus, it plays some awesome video games and has access to the internet, PSN, and can store photos, mp3's, downloaded games, and videos. At [...], the price was just right. We paired the system with an HDMI cable, Little Big Planet, and a couple of rented Blu-ray's to start.

My family has been thoroughly impressed. The picture and sound quality were excellent, and lately, we've been importing CD's so we can play our music at parties, or just relaxing in the living room. The PS3 connected to our wifi home network in just a few minutes. We use the browser to check out some YouTube videos, which is fun. The PSN offers a lot of good PS One classics and demo's of PS3 games, as well as offering movies and shows. We haven't rented shows yet but it is nice to have.

Another plus--Netflix Instant Streaming. This is a great feature to have. Your instant queue is good to go. Just choose what you want to watch and enjoy! It's that easy. Just order your Instant Streaming disc from [...], activate your system, and you're set.

Lastly, gaming. Coming from a Wii, the graphics look absolutely amazing. Playing games like Little Big Planet and Uncharted is an immersive experience. The selection of games is top-notch and you've got a nice selection of PS3 exclusives as well.

The PS3 is great to have for gaming, but also for music, movies, web browsing, and more. It's a lot of fun, and the 120GB version is really a steal at [...]. Just two years ago I bought a Wii for [...], but it does considerably less--though I still love it :).

Get the PS3 Slim while Amazon has it in stock. [...] with free shipping and no tax makes it a sweet deal.

I highly recommend the PS3! It will complete your home entertainment setup.
