Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PlayStation 3 120GB System

Customer Review: Great. Mabye a little... too great?
Summary: 5 Stars

By the time such systems as the Xbox360 were released, I had pretty much sworn off console gaming in favor of PC MMOs. I did pick up a Wii as soon as I found one on the shelf, but that was mainly for party purposes, and it doesn't get used otherwise.

In the past few years, I've managed to pick up a decent HDTV, and with the price drop on the PS3, I started looking at it as a possible blu-ray player. Naturally, there's cheaper ways to get a blu-ray disc on your screen, but I figured I'd go ahead and pick one up for the added value.

Briefly, I considered picking up a used 60gig, backward compatible one, as I do have a bunch of PS2 games. I figured that this wouldn't really be an issue, as I still have my PS2 if I want to play them, and I hadn't even plugged the thing in for years anyway. I opted to pick up a new Slim, as they're reported to run cooler and quieter than the older models, and that's always preferable for a home theater setup. The smaller footprint is also a plus.

What I didn't count on, is how handily the PS3 would renew my interest in console gaming.

As I bought it, I picked up Valkyria Chronicles, Afro Samurai, and Dragon Age. So impressed have I been, that my collection of games has expanded to 12 in the last six weeks, mostly budget titles and black friday/cyber monday deals.

It's also rekindled my interest in some of my old PS2 games, so I'm sort of torn on that issue. Part of me would like to have had the upconverting function, while another part of me maintains that my choice is still superior for movie/snuggling night. It's a shame that we're forced to choose.

I haven't gotten too much into online play. I have MMOs if I want that, but I prefer to hang with friends IRL for the console stuff, it's just more fun that way.

A minor curiosity is the included composite video cable. I understand why that's necessary, but they really couldn't manage to throw a cheap HDMI cable into the box along with it?

Customer Review: There can be only one......
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm lucky enough to have a WII, Xbox 360 and a PS3 so I can be completely objective in reviewing all three.... All three have their own benefits, but if you're buying your first console, here's a quick review with my feedback.

WII - more of a novelty system. Great for the casual gamer or kids. WII Sports and Mario Kart are my favorites and my kids (6 & 8) love it. It's also a great system when we have company over because there's virtually no learning curve - simply make the motion and you're a pro!

Xbox 360 - more of a system for hardcore gamers. There's a few exclusive games that might be of interest (Halo, Mass Effect, Gears of War), but they seem to be getting fewer as most Xbox titles can now be found on the PS3. Great online support with Xbox Live. Out of the box the Xbox 360 is noticeably lacking in hardware to a PS3 - the Xbox is missing wifi, rechargeable controllers (the Xbox controller comes with 2 AA batteries and you can buy rechargeable controller batteries separately), blu ray, need to pay for Xbox Live (PSN is free). I bought it for the exclusive games and online gaming. Overall, a strong system, although not as good a value as the PS3 in my opinion.

PS3 - In my opinion the clear cut winner (please keep in mind I have all three and am not being a "fanboy"). Out of the box it has everything the Xbox 360 is missing which is more bang for the buck. Surprisingly, I think the PS3 is also tipping the scales at exclusive content. My favorites are Killzone (great online), Uncharted, and Demon's Souls. Other hot titles include Resistance, Little Big Planet, MLB The Show and just released Heavy Rain. In my opinion the graphics, operating system, controls and functionality are better with the PS3. Wifi, Blu Ray, rechargeable controller, and free Playstation Network (PSN) just is the icing on the cake.

The WII and Xbox are both nice systems, but if you're only buying one - start with the PS3, you won't be disappointed!

Customer Review: A Must have
Summary: 5 Stars

The new slim model has been said to be ugly, and a crappier version (Display-Wise) of the Original PS3.

I have never owned the original PS3, so I cannot make any comparisons besides the three following:

There is no Linux support, which is fine because I wasn't planning to use it.

Bigger Hard Drive, with the same price as a original 80GB PS3.

Smaller, (Not sure about lighter) than the original PS3. Except when placed up-right, the width is larger than the width of the original PS3.

My first review, so I'll just do the standard cons, and pros. I'll ad a "neutral" for a opinion thing.

Pros:
Bigger HD for the same price.
Lighter than the original.
Same texture as the PS2, which is great if you don't like fingerprints on your PS3.
Same as Original PS3 basically.

Cons:
Heats up pretty quickly. Used it for about two hours, and it had already heated up a fair amount. Though I kept playing for another two hours or so, and the heat never increased, so it won't overheat quickly. I'll get a cooler, if one ever comes out, just in case.

Neutral:
No Linux support. Whether or not you were going to use this would depend on if it was a con, or pro, or not.
Buttons, instead of touch-sensitive pads. Some have said that they prefer the touch-sensitive eject, and power buttons, instead of actual buttons. I personally, don't care.
No hard power switch on the back. I know the original had a power switch on the back to do a hard power off, and on. This is easily fixed by disconnecting the power cable, but it would have been pretty convenient if the Slim had it as well.

Overall, if you were planning to get a PS3, get a slim, or the "new" PS3, or just, "PS3", as the slim version is actually officially called the PS3.

If you want a PS3, but wanted Linux support, and like the older look instead of the newer look, get a original.

Customer Review: Coolest PS3.......literally!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was one of those who got the original 60GB version when it came out which was a very good system until it gave up on me a few months ago. Was really mad at sony since I took very good care of my fat PS3 vacuuming the air vents regularly n stuff but it gave me the YLOD. Looked at the xbox 360 reviews and probably would have plunged for the one with the Jasper chip but the annual online membership fee always gave me second thoughts until I heard rumors about PS3 slim. Well I got rid of my fat 60GB PS3 and bought the new one from amazon and this thing is so silent compared to my old one.....it was just amazing. The old one would beat the sound of the Vornado Air Circulator in my room within 10-15 minutes of FIFA 09 or Fight Night R4 and it heated up my room. I turned this one on the following morning at 10:18am and continued playing Fight Night Round4 until 5:49pm!( I took breaks but just paused the game for 5-10 mins) I could have played longer but I didn't have FIFA 09 since I sold it thinking FIFA 10 will be out this month but it wont.... however this PS3 slim was still running very silent I could barely hear it sitting on my bed with the Vornado off and TV turned down all the way. I don't miss the backward compatibility of the fat one since I only liked playing Rugby from the PS2 platform and I do have the original fat PS2 which is still running fine. I never installed any other OS on my PS3 so don't need that either so for what it is designed to do this new PS3 does very well and without exhausting itself. Original PS3 owners I hope you guys don't get the YLOD (Yellow light of death) but if you do notice the fan running too loud within a 10-20 mins of gaming you might wana think about getting the new one. Oh by the way I did miss the built in card readers of the old one but I got a rosewill USB card reader and it works fine for transferring video and pics to and from the PS3. This one is a few seconds slower than my old one when booting but I cant say the same for games.

Customer Review: Beyond My Expectations and Somewhat Affordable.
Summary: 5 Stars

I expected the slim model to have a less quality built. But once I got it in my hands I realized it was actually better than the original. The Slim model is not a fingerprint magnet like the earlier models. I don't want to complain about backwords compatibility because I don't think I will play any of my PS2 games. And for this price, I shouldn't complain at all. Along with the gaming power this thing has, it is also one of the best blue-ray players out there. (or at least the best bang for your buck)

I had both, the PS3 80GB model and the PS3 120GB model; both new. This is what I found to be different:
[NOTE: I AM LISTING WHAT HAS NOT BEEN LISTED ON THE AMAZON DESCRIPTION ALREADY]
The obvious differences is that it is smaller, more energy efficient, has more HDD storage (and easy removable) and the case differs.

1 - The PS3 Slim papers and information were nearly identical. Except for the logos/images of the console. But the PS3 Slim (for some reason) did not have the yellow sheet that the previous versions had. The yellow sheet included the 1800 number (1800-345-SONY/1800-345-7669)

2 - The previous PS3 power cable was a 3-plug (both from the outlet and into the PS3); The new one is not as thick and is only 2-outlet

3 - When you first turn on the PS3, the tune is similar but different and the default OS is 2.73 (I think) The NEW PS3 logo is displayed along with the default (regular) theme but in Pink.

As you noticed, these changes are insignificant and somewhat irrelevant to what is really important. The new PS3 is by far the best gaming platform/entertainment system out there. Sure there is no backwards compatibility, but if possible, Sony might attempt to let people download PS2 Games from the Playstation Store - or we can only hope. But to be honest, PS3 Games are now cheaper than ever. You can find Resistance Fall of Man for around $10 used here on Amazon.
