I have experience with the ipod nano and the Sony nwz-800 series. I recently purchased the latest Sony NWZ-A726 4gb player and here are my thoughts about it:
1. the 'skin' of this player is noticably larger than the NWZ-800 series, with a 2.4 diag screen compared to the 2.0 screen on the 800.
2. to my ears, the sound of this player is similar to the NWZ-800 that I own, which is very impressive audio indeed.
3. the features of the 726 are the same as found in the 800 series
4. drag and drop makes this player a great 'roll your own' device since you don't need music management software. You can use Sony's software or the Media Player if you want.
5. The headphones are the same great ones supplied with the 800 series MINUS the extension cable!!
6. I personally like the way the 726 AND the 800 series present themselves, but they do so differently. The 726 strikes me as more of a 'technical looking' device, where the 800 strikes me as more of a cool looking instrument. You may not care or notice this. But the look and feel of the 700 and 800 is definitely different.
7. When I read reviews of the 800 series I thought drag and drop meant that I could use my own file management software to update folders on the device, but this is not possible. When you plug the device in (same for 700 series) you see an icon for the device itself, then you click on that and see folders for music, video, data..etc. If you have a shareware folder synch program, it will not be able to see these folders, so you really do need to manually drag/drop your desktop folders/files into the music,video, etc. folders on the device, or you need to use sony's management sw or windows player. But for brute force updating, you have to do it manually. (some older players, like iriver let you use any folder synch program to keep player folders updated... won't work on the sony).
8. possible cons: no FM radio and the 'back' and 'option' buttons are smaller than I'd like. Wish they were bigger. Wish for faster >> and also ability to delete a track/folder from the player.
8a. note: if you are playing a file, and press the right side of the button silver ring, the player will slowly advance through the track, while keeping audio in the earphones so you can hear where you are. If you PAUSE the track, and press the right side of the button ring, the player will more rapidly move through the track, but audio is muted.
9. I'm very glad I bought the 726, and would rate it very highly, same as I would the 800 series. Both excellent! Sony is doing great things with their new players, and if visual design means a lot to you, the 700 series is very cool, just as the 800 series is. I prefer both to my ipod nano 2nd generation.
