Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BCG-34HRMF4 Battery Charger with LCD Display and 4 AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries

Customer Review: Nice charger and comes with 2700MAh AAs too!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've done a lot of searching for the best charger under $20 and this seems to be the one. In the past I used a Sanyo travel charger that came with the Sanyo batteries which worked fine, but since I was looking for the new 2700 AAs to add to my old 2500s I stumbled upon this cool charger.

The LCD is a very cool feature that's not just for looks, it's actually functional giving you information about the charge level of each battery. The refresh function is a nice feature too although you should only refresh NiMH batteries every 30 charges to preserve their lifespan. Too much refreshing causes your batteries to not last as long. It has a battery cover which is nice but during charging you should leave it open to prevent hot air being trapped and it does get hot when charging 4 AA batteries. The charger itself looks very cool with a white glossy finish and green backlit LCD.

As far as charging goes, it works. Charging speed is comparable to my Sanyo charger using same capacity batteries. Also you don't have to charge in pairs. You can safely charge 1, 2, 3 or 4 batteries at a time. Many other chargers require charging in pairs. Since you get the new 2700 AAs with this unit, the price of the charger itself comes out to only around $15.

Customer Review: Best charger I have ever owned, great for travel overseas
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this charger for over 4 years and it has never let me down.

While this charger is more costly than others it also works better than any other charger I have ever used, and I have a drawer full of chargers.

The first trip I brought this charger on was to a country that had terrible power and the charger works perfectly while other people in our group had problems.

The best thing about this charger is that it uses a power cord like I use on my Laptop which not only elimates blocked outlets but allows me to put the charger on a table top.

Features none of my other chargers have that I think makes this charger a rock star:
*LCD display that show charging status for each individual battery
*Refresh cycle that brings back batteries that I thought were ready for the recycle bin
*Uses laptop type power cord without having a wall transformer blocking other outlets
*Backlite display so I can see the status in low light
*Automatically switches power for use in countries that are not 110 volt power with 60 cycles

This is the charger I always recommend to my friends and they have all told me they like it as much as I do!!

Customer Review: Excellent charger
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been very happy with this charger. I've owned it over a year now and it still works great. It also charges other brands of batteries just fine. I have some Kodak 1500mah batteries that I've been charging in it the past year (along with the Sony batteries). I've also charged Energizer batteries just fine in it.

The only batteries I have ever had die on me were the Lenmar brand, but that brand I have learned has many complaints about them dieing in any charger. Lenmar is just a cheaply made battery in my opinion.

This charger is great in that it has the nice LCD display which shows how much charge is currently in each battery. The instructions also say that you can charge from 1 to 4 batteries, which means it has a seperate circuit for each battery. The LCD light will go out once the batteries are fully charged.

Charging normally takes roughly 4 hours which in my opinion is fast. There are slower chargers, and there are some faster. Faster is not necessarily better for battery charging. The length of the charge also depends on how many mah the batteries are. Larger mah batteries will take a little longer than smaller mah rated batteries.

Customer Review: Dependable, accurate charger

I bought this model charger (BCG-34 HRMF) in April 2008 and it continues to work well. Unlike one reviewer who said he did not think the batteries remained charged for more than a couple days, I use them (2700mAh ) in my Panasonic camera (DMZ LZ3) and they last for months at a time. Or, if I'm traveling and taking 1,000 - 2,000 pictures, i'll have to replace them once, or perhaps twice (I don't use flash often and don't spend a lot of time reviewing pics in the camera viewer). I've also charged 2300 mAh Maxell batteries and 2500 mAh Duracell batteries without problems, although I've never tried to determine which lasted longer. I've also used the Sony batteries in numerous applications -- flashlights, clocks, remove controls, etc. with good results. The charger is very nice in that it provides both the discharge and charge functions. The LED indicator lets you know how far along (3 stages I believe) the charging process is, and goes dark when fully charged. It doesn't overcharge or overheat the batteries even if left in beyond a fully charged state. I paid $29 for charger + 4 batteries back then. Still happy.

Customer Review: Did alot more than I expected
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this charger for a few months now and it has worked wonders. Though it says it mainly charges Ni-MH, but it also charges my older NiCd. There are a few small notes though. If the batteries are left in the charger and the charger is unplugged, then the batteries will drain off after a few days. And as many people say, it is not the fastest charger out there, but I've found it fairly reliable compared to some of the other faster chargers I've owned in the past.

One of the most interesting aspects of this charger, and many slow chargers, is that it actually has the ability to charge some alkaline batteries that are on the market. This should be tried at your own risk though, and I've only heard people talk about it before I tried it on this charger. I was able to recharge the 4 Duracell Alkaline batteries that I was using (still using after the charge) for my wireless keyboard. It is always nice to know that you can get some extra life out of all the alkaline batteries that we usually just throw away. So, this charger was well worth the money.
