Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BDP-S1 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Customer Review: Gave me a headache.
Summary: 1 Stars

I had the "opportunity" to view this player at one of BB's Magnolia stores. It was connected via HDMI to a high-end Sony 1080p RPTV, playing a Blu-Ray demo disc. The first thing I noticed was an unexpected fuzziness and graininess to the image. Since it was a movie clip I just thought, "well, OK... I guess it's normal for film to have grain, right?"

However, as the disc progressed into a chapter of digital still pictures (presumably to demonstrate the steadiness of the image), I was even less impressed. I watched, somewhat off-put, as a centuries-old book panned jerkily onto the screen. Once the panning finally stopped, the richly calligraphed pages of the open book could easily be read (albeit with noticeable ghosting around the letters).

But then, when an ancient style world map appeared on the screen, I literally winced. The violent vibration from the closely spaced lines reminded me of a flickering 1980's computer monitor running 1024x768 at 60Hz. A whole section of the map was shimmering, and not in a good way.

I couldn't watch any more, and I walked out of the store with a headache I didn't have when I entered. If Sony's own demo of their Blu-Ray player is this bad, they can keep it.

Customer Review: Overpriced...for a reason
Summary: 1 Stars

This palyer actually plays quite well. The load times are shoter than I exspected and the picture Quality was superb. Why am I giving it one star then? Because it is overpriced and not in my opinion, it's a fact.

When Sony released the Playstation 3 this week, 2 statements sent up some red flags. They touted that although the system cost between $500-600 that is was a bargain considering it played Blu-Ray movies and stand alone players cost $1000. But later it was stated that Sony was taking a $250 loss for each PS3 sold. Now if you add that back to the price of the PS3 it's still $150 cheaper then a stand alone player. Take it a step further. Remove all the wi-fi equipment, card readers, graphics chips and you have a bare bones Blu-ray player that costs about $400. So why does Sony inflate the price so much? Because they can. They are the patent holder for the technology so anyone who wants to manufacture a Blu-Ray player has to pay the steep price for it. Sony can sell the PS3 at a loss because they know in the long run they have injected the BR technology into one of the most popular products around thus winning the format wars by default.

Customer Review: A Piece of Crap
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this for the house for Christmas and we really got a lemmon. The unit only worked for a couple of days prior to having all sorts of video and audio problems. For this last month I have been on the phone with Sony who keep sending me fileware upgrade in the hope of fixing the unit. The last upgrade simply fried the unit and it no longer works. They then request I pay to ship it back to them so they could fix it and I would get it back withing 2 - 3 months. This was unacceptable so I brought it back to a Sony Style store and demanded my money back. I will never purchase another Sony product again.

Customer Review: Comapre withPanasonic first

I have both Blu Ray players in my rig . The Sony is much inferior due to lack of gamma control , picture and sound quality is already not as good as Panasonic. the Panasonic has a built in scaler that is incredible. If you can compare chapter nine of Kingdom of Heaven on both players. The Panasonic can display tremendous color in dark scenes that just appear drab on Sony.
I was disapponited because this is suppode to a "Reference " player. Get the upgrade for Panasonic before you view KoH. the sound is spectacular.
Blu Ray is the format of the future . Spend your money wisely.

Customer Review: What kind of blue ray is this?
Summary: 1 Stars

I just seen the player this after noon at Best Buy and was really sorry about others' good comments about this player. I didn't have a chance to test the sound because I was so loud out there, but the picture, it was nothing to be impressed. I guessed it was a DVD upconvert at first. And after I asked the BB technician standing there I was so disappointed about Blue Ray. If this is all about blue ray, I rather buy a regular DVD player for Christ's sake. In addition, this player was playing through a Sony 40V2500 Full 1080p HDTV.
