Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BDP-S300 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Customer Review: Not a bad player
Summary: 4 Stars

If you can get past the price, this is a decent player. It works great for me; every Blu-ray I've tried has worked flawlessly. Also the DVD upconvert looks excellent

However, the player is a bit slow. It takes about 20 seconds from turning it on until you can load a DVD or Blu-ray disk. During that time, it doesn't tell you if you've already pressed eject for the tray or not so I end up pushing it like too many times.

The good thing is that this player offers an infared interface (unlike the PS3). I have my player in a different room and use the Logitech Harmony 890 to send RF signals which get converted to infared in the closet where I store this player. It works flawlessly, something you can't do with a PS3 (unless there is an RF to blue tooth converter)

Considering this is a new technology and I was willing to be an early adopter, I really like the player. Seeing as how I have a massive DVD collection and about 10 Blu-rays so far, I end up using it almost every day. If you watch movies often, I think the price is justified.

Customer Review: Awesome experience
Summary: 4 Stars

My Sony Blu-ray pretty much delivers everything I was hoping it would, and then some.

The picture and sound quality are fantastic. I cannot imagine a better picture out of my Mitsu 1080p DLP or better sound out of my Bose 901's. And while the long load up time is the only thing keeping me from giving this player a 5 star rating, it is really not a big deal to me. My usual routine for watching TV is to first check out what is on my DVR and then later watching a movie. If I have a Blu-ray disc to watch, I just turn on the player and let it boot up while I am watching stuff on my DVR. And I have never had a problem playing a disc or zipping through chapters that others have reported.

But the "and then some" came when I first tried playing a standard DVD on this machine. I put on "Master and Commander" and was blown away by the picture quality. No, it wasn't HD quality, but the improvement over standard DVD was very evident.

Customer Review: Too Slow...
Summary: 4 Stars

No kidding.. when they say it's slow, they mean it.. It takes more than a full minute to start up, and in some movies, it takes like three minutes to start showing something, while a "loading.." graphic makes you wonder..." Did I make a good purchase ? "

When I purchased this BD player, I had the option of buying a PS3 instead, which cost the same, and would have give me fast load times + games, but I finally decided for this one since in Virgin Megastore, they were giving 3 movies included in the box for my 400$ + 5 free movies that are supposedly going to be mailed to me back. Besides that, the PS3, uses Bluetooth technology for remote controls, and that would have made my Logitech Harmony Universal Control useless, which is a MAJOR thing for me.

Besides all this, the picture, sound, interface and controls are great. BD wins hands down to me..

Customer Review: Sony BDP S300
Summary: 4 Stars

I guess I am lucky, mine has worked fine. I also got lucky on the price, I bought it here on 2/17 for $350 with free shipping, $70 less than the price today. Not sure I'd pay $420 for it. I have tried about 20 movies, BD and DVD. It has player all but one (a DVD - Clay Pigeons) without problems. It is slow to power up and some BDs take a while to load. BDs look great on my 50" 720p Panasonic. The best feature is the up-converting, normal DVDs look great. The controls and settings are easy-to-use. The fact that (unlike my old, cheap Sony DVD player) this thing can't remember where you stopped a disk, is annoying and unfathomable. Netflix has ton of BD titles. Some BD are better than others in picture quality, but the best of them are awesome. If you lack technical sophistication wait a while before going to Blu-ray.

Customer Review: Just do the firmware update!!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

This dvd player is just like every other one on the market. When you first use it you must do the updates!!!! This solved all of the problems and even improved loading speed. I played Pearl Harbor Blu-Ray (Incredible) and it only took 20 seconds to load!!!! If you have ever seen it then you know it is a good 3 hour movie. I think the best feature is the audio DRC which set to max created one the most explosive audio experiences I have ever seen. Also, with the audio set the dobly digital and dts to on, and not linear pcm, big difference. As for the video set the resolution to auto and 24p to on. This is the only way it works, do not manually set the resolution. I have used it a few times and I am satsified. More then anything $229 for a Sony Blu-Ray, New!!! You have to be crazy miss this deal.
