Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BDP-S300 1080p Blu-ray Disc PlayerCustomer Review: Finally - Affordable Blu-Ray from Sony Summary: 5 Stars
The good: Picture quality is amazing, and careful shopping can get you this gen-u-wine Sony Blu-Ray Disk (BD) player for under $300. The bad: disks are a little slow to load, and the first thing anybody who buys one needs to do is upgrade the firmware (current version is 3.30, my player came with 2.60). Upgrading firmware is a pain in the patootie BUT consider the upside - firmware that can be updated by users means a lot of flexibility. In fact, the ability to upgrade the Java-based firmware is one of the ways in which Blu-Ray trumps HD. Once you've watched a movie like "Night at the Museum" in high-def, you won't want to go back to NTSC. BTW, even though this machine is relatively affordable, it's a full 1080p player. Even if you don't need 1080p today - even if you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i (or 720p) - this machine provides growth potential at a reasonable cost.
Customer Review: the best hd player Summary: 5 Stars
I went to the store to buy the Toshiba HD dvd player the chip version for $300 one, there at the store i found out that the cheap model of Toshiba play is not 1080p, it is only 720p. then i bought the higher model for $450. brought it home and watched swordfish, the quality was good, but i could hardly tell the difference between my old sony up-converting dvd player quality and this toshiba quality. SO i packed and returned back to the store. Then i bough this Sony BDP S300, brought it home and i watch SHooter, wow. the quality, of the picture., sound, amazing, huge difference. I truly love it, if you have HDTV then spending about one to two hundred more for getting blu ray is not going to hurt you, but you will truly enjoy the movie as the director intended to. Now I'm totally blu ray, and i support blu ray. and i recommend everyone to buy this product, it is the best
Customer Review: I don't know what the big fuss is about regarding the BDP-S500 Summary: 5 Stars
I've read many reviews on the Sony BDP-S500 and there's been a ton of gripe in regards to the speed and load time of the player. I'm not sure what people are used to (or what their expections are) but this DVD loads just as fast as any player I've ever used. There is no lag time on this player that others have experienced with this player.
Load time is around 3-5 seconds per disc and once the disc starts up, no problems....maybe Sony updated the software recently.
From a cosmetic standpoint, the player is beautiful...very stylish.
In summary, this may be Sony's lower end Blu-Ray player but if you're looking to simply play movies at bluray quality without all the bells and whistles, this is your player....why spend extra to get features you're never going to use anyways.
Customer Review: IT ALL COMES DOWN TO WHAT YOU SEE Summary: 5 Stars
I PURCHASED A SAMSUNG BLUE RAY WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT,NOT IMPRESSED EXCHANGED IT FOR THE TOSHIBA HDA1.MUCH BETTER AT HALF THS COST.I REALLY BELIEVE BLUE RAY IS GOING TO WIN THIS BATTLE BECAUSE OF STUDIO SUPPORT.SO WHEN THE SONY BDP-S300 CAME OUT I PURCHSED ONE,THE PICTURE QUALITY IS ABOUT THE SAME AS HD DVD BUT I FIND THE UPSCALE MUCH BETTER THAN THE TOSHIBA (I AM VEIWING THIS ON A 1080P 73" MITSUBISHI DLP TV).IT ALL COMES DOWN TO WHAT YOU SEE!!.THIS BLUE RAY HAS NOT HAD ANY OPERATING PROBLEMS LIKE THE TOSHIBA WHEN I FIRST PURCAHSED IT (PICTURE FREEZE).THE ONLY THING THAT MIGHT SAVE HD DVD IS WHAT THE INDUSTRY HAS SAID THAT TOSHIBA WILL PRODUCE THERE MACHINES WITH LOW END COMPANIES LIKE COBY.SO MAYBE YOU CAN PURCHASE A HD DVD SOMETIME SOON FOR AROUND 50 BUCKS.GO WITH THE BLUE RAY
Customer Review: Sony 2nd Gen Blu-ray player Summary: 5 Stars
The second generation of a new technology is almost always worth the wait and this is certainly the case with Sony's BDP-S300 blu-ray disk player. Half the price of the original, this sleek new device loads faster and plays CD's, significant limitations in the first generation player. Hook up is fast and simple via HDMI or Component video cables and the set up menu is straight forward. Most importantly, this unit produces startlingly vivid pictures from blu-ray disks even when the HD display lacks full HD (1080p) capability. The remote is functional and programable. My only complaint is that Sony neglected to include an HDMI cable with the player, an irritating omission in a $500 component. If you are ready to move up to high definition DVD's this is unit to buy.
