The good: Excellent picture quality on Blu-ray and DVD; DVD upconversion up to 1080p; HDMI output.
The bad: No onboard Dolby TrueHD decoding; slow load times, particularly unbearable on newer BD Java discs like Pirates of the Caribbean; some minor video performance issues; no Ethernet port for firmware upgrades.
The bottom line: The BDP-S300 is a decent choice if you're limiting yourself to a relatively cheap, standard-design Blu-ray player, but everyone else should consider the competition.

The Sony Blu-Ray DVD is everything you want in
true 1080P picture and sound quality.
The images literally leap off the TV.
I have no reservations in saying that I am
thoughly pleased with my purchase.
Also the technology of Blu-Ray is far
superior to HD-DVD and the selection of movies
is quite extensive. Even my old DVDs play in 1080i and are better than I expected for quality.

This is a magnificent Blu-ray DVD player. It enhances regular DVD viewing and presents Blu-ray discs in full 1080p (if you have a 1080p HDTV). One necessary step is to obtain a firmware update from Sony; I run a Mac computer, so I could not download the firmware update from Sony's website - only Windows. But, I called Sony and got the firmware disc in three days. Contrary to what you may have read in some reviews, this machine works great with the update!Customer Review: Awsome picture and sound

This blu-ray player delivers excellent quality picture and sound, you won't be disapointed. The dvd up-conversion works well and makes standard dvd's look awsome. Very quiet, optical audio outlet, coaxial audio out & 5.1 channel out. The best thing about blu-ray is the major motion picture studio support. More movies available than HD-DVD, including Disney, 20th century Fox and Sony exclusive, having support of 7 of the top 8 studios.Customer Review: If you're going blu ray get this sony player!

I've been debating whether to go with HD DVD or blu ray. After much thought I chose blu ray. To put it short Blu ray has better quality and more movie studios than HD DVD. Blu ray is outselling HD DVD 2 to 1. When you decide to go blu ray this Sony player is a must have. It is superior to all other blu ray players and is the most reasonably priced. You will not be dissapointed if you buy the Sony BDP-S300.
