Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray PlayerCustomer Review: Love it - Blu Ray at its BEST - For US! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this player.
I am not going to go as in depth as Wanderer on this product but will say that he/she has hit on the high points properly.
The main thing to remember here is that this player is BD Profile 2.0 and BDlive Ready via an ethernet port which will allow for future firmware upgrades.
This is the model above the S350 because of a few features.
1. 7.1 analog outputs. If you have a newer receiver that can decode all of the new audio formats then you do not need this player....you can opt for the 350. If, however, you have an older receiver that has 7.1 analog inputs you can have the player do all of the work and use your receiver as a gateway for sound to your 7.1 speakers.
2. There is one other feature that puts this above the BDP-S350...and that is Blu Ray Profile 2.0 w/1GB flash memory. The 350 does not have FLASH and I believe it does not support the now finalized 2.0 profile. Not that the 350 is a bad unit (we own one of those also. The flash memory, in my opinion helps the quick start up times on the 550...a big gripe with my 350...
I think this player has a permanent spot in many homes for a long time to come.
I highly recommend this to anyone getting into BluRay - new reciver/old receiver..whatever your setup...this is the one to get.
Customer Review: Great Choice For Older Receivers Summary: 5 Stars
If you're like me and your receiver doesn't have HDMI in, nor does it decode any of the new HD audio formats, but does have discrete 5.1 or 7.1 inputs, you would be hard pressed to get a better Blu Ray unit than this one. For the money it's the best player to offer on board decoding and the analog outputs to let you have HD sound without shelling out the bucks to replace what is probably a perfectly good receiver already sitting on your rack.
As a player, it performs nicely. I've little to compare it with since this is my first Blu Ray unit, but I'm a good bit knowledgeable about electronic toys in general - and this one does everything very well.
A little slow on the loading times but you can't have everything be perfect all the time.
It upsamples standard DVD's to look quite beautiful depending on the quality of the source material. Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Braveheart all looked wonderful; but Last of The Mohicans left a bit to be desired. It's all about the source.
For Blu Ray I found it on par or better than my friend's PS3. Plus with the discrete outputs, I get to hear Dolby and DTS HD tracks while he has to save up for a new receiver.
Good unit. But look around and get it for under $300. I managed to get it from a reputable seller on ebay. I couldn't be happier.
Customer Review: Sony S 550 is superb Summary: 5 Stars
Well, after long wait and search since last year and price up and down, finally pulled trigger on this S-550. The best decision to complete my home theater system. I am shocked at Panny BD35 and BD55 price hike/ fluctuation and scarcity, but the Sony S-550 will get what you need. At $284 bought this month with Amazon, while the Panasonics are selling at sky-limit price, I am a very satisfied and happy camper here.
The Sony s-550 is very very easy to set up, in fact 10 min, provided you have your wireless router with ethernet cable ready for internet connection, your HDMI cable ready from your 7.1 HDMI receiver (Onkyo 606). The unit will start once powered up to let you walk through set-up with extremely easy like baby step. The player runs quiet and smooth with stunning quality, in all, it plays very well as what you expected from Sony players.
The picture/video and audio from this baby is amazing, blu-ray is truly entertaining and addictive ! Very happy and highly recommend this S-550.
I know as long as Panny are in short supply till the new BD 60 and 80 come out, this sony S-550 will be in high demand and of coures, price hike will follow as soon as it is getting scarce! Get this before it is out of control again. BTW, software update is a breeze, make sure you have your internet connection ready.
Customer Review: Sony BDP-S550 Blu-Ray Player Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned this player for a few weeks now and just love it. I was debating between the Samsung BD-P2500 and this model. I was looking for a player that was easy to use and had the latest features (BD-live, TrueHD, ETC...). I also looked at the BDP-S350 but decided on the BDP-S550 because of the extra features over the BDP-S350. I presently have all of my components hooked up using HDMI. So, the analog outputs of the BDP-S550 are not much use to me.
The Samsung model does have the Netflex option over the Sony models; however I am not a Netflex subscriber. The Samsung would have also matched my LCD (LN52A650).But; I would have to say that the minor disk compatibility issues of the Samsung is what ultimately helped me make my final decision for the BDP-S550.
I have watched Iron-Man and the Dark Knight and both looked and sounded great. Some other people have commented about the buttons on the remote being close together, I did not find this to be an issue. I also liked that the remote has a backlight.
This is a very nice player with all of the latest features. I would recommend this player if you are looking for a very easy player to set-up and operate for the price point.
Customer Review: TOUCHDOWN SONY! Summary: 5 Stars
From the first time I heard of BluRay I said, "Man I have to own one!" So like many of you I waited and waited and waited. I ended up buying a Sony VAIO laptop over the summer that included a BDP (BluRay Disc Player). I used the HDMI port on the laptop to hook it up to my 46" Sony V2500...the result blew me away, but the sound could only be played through my TV, because I have an older receiver without HDMI switching. In comes the SONY BDP-S550. I LOVE THIS MACHINE! I hooked up my HDMI to my television and then my optical audio to my receiver...IT WAS AWESOME!!! BUT...without TRUE HD or DTS MA when I pressed display it said "Dolby Digital 3/2.1". :( So I unhooked the optical and used the analog audio outs from the BDP and hooked it up to my receiver. BOOOOOM!!! My display button then showed "TRUE HD 3/2.1".
The menus on the BDP allow a user to switch every conceivable option on the unit. AMAZING! I am truly impressed with this product, and extremely glad that I waited and bought this second generation Blu Ray unit rather than earlier models!! TOUCHDOWN SONY!
