Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray Player

Customer Review: Excellent blu-ray player for older 7.1 stereo systems
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this blu-ray player for many of the same reasons as other reviewers mentioned - second generation play with relatively quick startup time (profile 2) and support for direct 7.1 analog out to older stereos with direct 7.1 audion in (Yamaha home theater system). I connected the blu-ray player to the Yamaha home theater system through direct 7.1 analog cables as well as an optical. The former for those blu-ray disks that support 7.1 audio and the later for older DVDs and 5.1 blu-ray disks. Both produced a great sound field - though partly due to the Yamaha supporting an additional 2 presence speakers and sound field processing - even when using the 5.1 audio input.

The only negative is the player is still relatively expensive compared to many plain digital out only (optical and HDMI only) players. But so far I've been impressed with its video and audio performance.

Customer Review: AWESOME!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so glad I waited for this player. The picture and sound are fantastic and I couldn't be happier. The only "issue" I had was the memory card which came with the player. It had an intermittent contact problem that I tracked down to the card itself. I talked to no less than 4 different customer service representatives before I found one who instructed me to send JUST the memory card to their service facility. The others wanted me to box up the whole player and send it back, all for a $12 memory card. Once the card was received by the service center, the technician called to verify the problem and my troubleshooting steps. He not only sent me a new memory card but 3 movies for my trouble. Though frustrating at times, ALL the customer service agents were very polite and wanted to help. But if the issue isn't "in the script", it seemed to cause a lot of confusion.

Customer Review: Sony Blu-Ray Player
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been reading the reviews for the Sony Blu-Ray Players...the BDP-S350 and the BDP S550 and I don't like what I'm reading. Who makes a Blu-Ray Player that has all the bells and whistles we're used to? Like when you pause it and if it stops it returns to the same place where you left off. Or the display of the title and chapters. Or the ease in fast forward and rewind. And how about the zoom and fill the screen to avoid letter-boxing???? What deck does this? And is it able to sync with my Sony Bravia LCD TV? Anyone out there know the answer? If so...tell me so I can purchase this deck from Amazon.com. That would make everyone happy to have such a posting on their website. The idea is to make the customers happy with a player that's hassle free. And one more thing...doesn't take 10 minutes to download a movie or 3 hours to set up the deck. Help!

Customer Review: Excellent Player--Glad I Waited
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had mine for about three weeks now, and I couldn't be happier. It was ready to go, right out of the box, no updates required. It's a good looking unit, and it's A/V quality is outstanding. It's particularly good at upconverting regular DVD's, BTW.

Make sure you pay attention to what reviewer ViperGeek said below: In the A/V menus, make sure that the "BD Audio" setting is switched to "direct" or you get a significant delay between what's happening on the screen, and what you hear. The lips start moving, and a moment later, you hear what they're saying. It only takes a few seconds to find and switch, so it's not really a big deal, but it freaked me out until I found the solution (Thanks, ViperGeek!)

Great player, great price...I'm glad I waited for the "next generation" players to come out. It was definitely worth it!

Customer Review: Worth it for me

Im no audiophile.I just know what I like. With a Sony 50"720 I was waiting to be diapointed and I wasnt.Watched Dark Knight and thought the picture was as good as I was getting on my HD channels.Should only be better with 1080.Also after Dark Knight we watched an ep of Rescue Me,and I was pleasently surprised that the upscaling was better,to me,then the Sony upscaling dvd player we are using now.On a side note, didnt want to order online, wanted to be able to take back somewhere and see someone face to face if I didnt like it,so even though it was on sale, told the sales person what it was online, free shipping,no tax,and could they do better. For a box store, got them to knock off another $15 off the sale price.Hey,money on the table.I never do that, but I really had my info right on this player.
