Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray Player

Customer Review: Great Blu-Ray player
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this player for several months now. It has worked with every Blu-Ray disc that I have played in it. It does everything that a person could need. It decodes DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD in the player and will output it to a receiver over HDMI or 7.1 analog outputs. It will also bitstream the DTS-HD and TrueHD via HDMI if your receiver will decode them. If your receiver is older, it can output Dolby Digital over the optical/coaxial outputs.

Has BDLive, but that doesn't interest me. It's nice to have the option though.

Definitely worth the price to get the onboard decoding of the HD audio formats.

Customer Review: Sony BDP-S550 is a very good Blu-ray player
Summary: 5 Stars

I got my Sony BDP-S550 last January. The picture and sound are very good. And I think it will still be even if I'm not using the Denon AVR-2809 receiver. Watching BD discs is as expected, enjoyable video and audio. What really convinced me was when I watched Clint Eastwood's Heartbreak Ridge DVD on it. It sounded well. It looked good.

Other than those already mentioned, my problem is that the free flash card doesn't seem to be working and the BD-Live feature doesn't seem to function. But what's important is the movie feature, which this blu-ray player plays in outstanding fashion.

Customer Review: Great price, great features, great performance!
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't believe you can get a Blu-Ray player of such quality for such a low price, but it's true. This player has all of the latest and greatest features, an easy to use onscreen menu, and it's compatible with a wide variety of media. Ordinary DVDs look great on it and Blu-Ray disk look fantastic! I also create my own DVD+R DVDs from old Hi8 camcorder tapes and play those on it. They look beautiful! And you can play 7.1 Master Audio (audio-only) Blu-Ray disks on it, which sound incredible with a home theatre setup. At this price you absolutely cannot go wrong. Buy it--you'll love it!

Customer Review: It does the job well
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had my Sony Bdp-s550 for a little over a month now. I have it running through a Denon 4306 AVR which does not decode the lossless audio. The s-550 will decode the audio and send it out through HDMI in which the receiver will show MULTI CH or over anolog outs which shows up as EXT IN on my receiver. It is BD Live, but does not have Wi Fi which is something I would like to see on the expensive models. The sound and the picture are wonderful to my eyes. For Video I use the Sony VPL-VW100 Projector onto a 106" Stewart Filmscreen. I also have a PS3 that now resides in my bedroom.

Customer Review: A great player, with a minor irritation
Summary: 5 Stars

The only thing I can add to the numerous other reviews is one small complaint. If the unit is off and you want to eject a disc the unit insists on spinning the disc up first and reading it, rather than just spitting it out. This adds an unnecessary delay to retrieving your disc.
With the power off you can hit "'eject" on the remote, the unit will turn on, but before opening the drawer it spins the disc up to determine the media type - this takes about 10 seconds. Why the software feels the necessity to know what the disc is before ejecting it is beyond me . . .
