Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony BRAVIA XBR Series KDL-52XBR9 52-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LCD HDTV, BlackCustomer Review: Fantastic Picture! Couldn't be More Pleased! Summary: 5 Stars
I am going to keep this review brief since others have already provided all the detailed information on this television's specs etc.
I consider myself a perfectionist when it comes to the quality of a TV's picture, so I was somewhat nervous after reading some of the critical reviews on this model. I was pleasantly surprised when we fired this TV up for the first time at how utterly gorgeous the picture quality was! I went through and created CUSTOM picture adustments using the recommended settings from [...] website for this model as a starting point and then tweaked things from there. Given, the black level could be a little blacker, but I have never seen any other LCD flat panel with darker blacks than this one has. Overall the color balance is beautiful!
Here is a list of the components we have running into the set:
XBOX 360S Video Game Console
Sony PS3 Video Game Console
Sony 5-Disc DVD Changer
Direct TV HD DVR/Receiver
Nintendo Wii Video Game Console
Sony 5.1 Surround Sound Audio System.
One of the coolest features I have found with this set is the fact that every single video input including the internal internet feed provides its own complete set of picture and audio setting controls. This allows you to fine tune your color, picture etc. to work best with any particular video source. I have never had the luxury of this level of control before and it has really made a difference in getting thr absolute best picture from each of our inputs!
We rented several Blu-Ray DVDs and played them on our Sony PS3 including Planet Earth, Contact and the newly remastered "How the West Was Won" and were blown away by how incredible they looked! Believe it or not, the most impressive Blu-Ray movie we have watched so far was "How the West Was Won" which was made it 1962 in Cinerama, but the picture quality was amazing! It looked even better than Planet Earth which was shot in HD video! We also tried out a bunch of the internet stuff including Netflix. While I still prefer the interface on the XBOX 360 for Netflix streaming, the TV's Netflix section worked well and performed comparably. One thing we found though is that if we stopped playing a movie on the XBOX and then resumed the same movie on the TV, it would not pick up where the XBOX left off and instead would start from the beginning of the movie. The XBOX 360 on the other hand would resume any movie we partially watched on the TV from the same point. Not sure what is up with that, but as I said, the XBOX 360's Netflix implementation is a lot slicker than the Sony system both on this TV and the PS3.
In terms of the remote control... I was able to map all the remote functions to my Logitech Harmony remote control so that I can run everything on this TV using that smaller and more manageable remote. The remote control that comes with this TV is a little big and somewhat hard to handle, so I was glad to be able to put that in a drawer and use my Harmony instead.
The audio quality is decent but nothing earth shattering. We tend to only use the TV audio when watching Direct TV and that is only as a fill for our main audio system. For all other video sources, we mute the TV speakers and just use our Sony 5.1 surround sound system.
Overall, I can say with total confidence that this is one of the best looking 52" HDTVs I have ever seen. After we tweaked ours, it looks far better than I have ever seen this model look in any store by a huge margin! The key is to use a CUSTOM setting and adjust everything yourself using one of the recommended settings from the web. If you are looking for an impressive HDTV in this size that will impress the hell out of even the most picky video addict, I would seriously consider the 52" XBR9!
Lastly... Our TV was purchased from MODIA via Amazon, and it arrived four days after we ordered it in perfect condition on a FedEx frieght truck strapped down to a pallet. We also purchased the 4 year extended in home warranty from Square Trade because the replacement cost of a 52" LCD panel is more than the total cost of the entire TV!
In case anyone has been struggling with getting their XBR9 to look right, here are my settings which look great on our set!
