Customer Review: Sony Gets It Right

After a year-and-a-half's use, I've upped the rating to five stars...
Sony finally got it all just about right with this styling/engineering departure, particularly after a string of other disappointing boombox products:
*Most obvious is the choice of CD on the front and, in the style of their legacy portable shortwave, cassette on the back. A very smart move...literally.
*And then they put the battery compartment on the bottom because, honestly, you're going to access the front and back (CD or cassette) more often than the batteries. Smart again!
*Controls are on top where they're supposed to be.
*Uses C batteries instead of D. Saves weight and size. Each battery, too, has it's own compartment should you leave one in that leaks. Hey, it happens sometimes. Since the compartment is already on the bottom, guess where the leak will go? Out!...not into the electronics. This is the clever Sony thinking I'd expect.
*Antenna completely retracts for protection from inadvertent bending.
It feels substantial and sturdy. Sound is very good for what this is. I use it in the garage and driveway to listen to older tapes and CDs. This won't replace your several-hundred-dollar Bose, but who'd want to put the Bose in the garage anyway?
I also like the 60s retro styling touch of the curved handle. I just wish it was metal instead of plastic. In line with the retro style, I'd have preferred to see knobs for volume/tuning. And, I could use a slightly more readable display.
For those minor, minor points, I'd give it 4.5 out of 5.

I looked for a long time for a stereo, boombox or undercounter radio that would fit well in my kitchen. I wanted something that would fit in a small space but still sound good and be able to tune in my favorite radio station which is not always easy to get in. I read tons of reviews and was getting very discouraged. But the Sony CFD-E100 is perfect for my needs. It sounds great, looks good, takes up only a little space and does *not* use the cord as an antenna - which I have found to be an annoying "feature" of some radios. Also, the case is that same white appliance plastic that my coffee maker and toaster are made from, so it blends well in my kitchen and is easy to clean. I also think it's attractive with the blue accents. To save space, the CD player is vertical and in the front, while the cassette player is in the back. So you can't see the cassette player from the front, which confused my husband for a minute. But there's no reason that one way or the other has to be the "front" so you can just turn it around if you want to use the cassette player and need to see it. It also comes with a remote, which I have not had the need to use.

* a little hard to figure out how to set the radio pre-sets

This is the second Sony CFD-E100 that we have purchased. The first one was a gift for my son that we found at Target. It has been the BEST radio purchase we ever made. Even after 4 years of heavy use, that radio is still going strong.
We were looking for gift for one of my daughters who has gone through a few different radios in the last several years. So, we chose to purchase another Sony since the first one has performed so well.
The sound is very nice from this unit. I like it's unique shape which is a more stable build than the traditional "brick" design. The cassette access is in the rear of the unit while the CD access is on the front along with the radio display. It even comes with a remote control which works well and is an added benefit.
We will be purchasing at least one more of these radios in the near future for our bedroom - we like it that much!
Customer Review: NOT A BAD, LITTLE 'SOUND BOX'!

We brought this little guy home the day before the 4TH and have only good things to say about it!
True, we also had to consult the owners manual briefly....but our egos were not bruised in the process.
And you do have to shade the display to see it in sunlight, but as another reviewer recently stated....anything to save the batteries!
We are audiophiles and find the 'mega bass' button to be superfluous. Just leave it on and enjoy the big sound!
This little portable was purchased so we can enjoy favorite CDs and radio stations on our small sailboat (when not actually sailing). Since the boat has only 12 volt power, switch to the batteries, and it fits the purpose mightily!

For the price, I think it's an incredible bargain. It looks really cute, it's modern and not over the top. It's also compact and the cd sound quality is quite good. The radio is digital i.e doesn't use a dial so that is pretty cool as well. It comes with a remote but I haven't used it and it also has a cassette deck player which I have not used either. I primarily use it at work to listen to the radio or cd's and it fits nicely on my desk without taking up a lot of space and I have received lots of comments on how nice-looking it is.
Most other boomboxes in the same price range can't rival this in terms of features, quality, looks or any other category. Recommended.
