Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony CFDG505 Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox (Black)Customer Review: POWER TO SPARE Summary: 5 Stars
The important thing for a boom box is the boom. If the speakers are crap, forget it. I am pleased to report that Sony Xplod speakers are great!
Any speakers can be loud when you're close to them, but what separates good speakers from cheap speakers is how they sound when you're across the room. The better speakers will have less volume drop-off as you get further away - in other words, the better the speaker, the less the sound will change as you move away from them. In other-other words, cheap speakers will sound loud up close, but quiet far away, while good speakers will sound close to the same up close or far away...... they can carry far. Not only do Xplod speakers have the volume to shout over the loudest machine on the factory floor where I work (P-28, a really loud bugger), but they shout it for a long distance. In fact, my boss came out of the office to ask me to turn the volume down because he thought if he could hear it from the office, I must be blasting. He got about five feet away, stopped and listened, and said "Huh........ it's not really loud at all."
Oh yeah, speaking of power..... it takes eight D batteries. If you use Energizer (tm) rechargeables, with bass boost off they will last more than 6 hours. Not bad for battery power. I take my music seriously, and I was often away from a power outlet at work, so I kept two chargers and a whopping 24 rechargeable D batteries in circulation. A bit expensive, but I had music wherever I went. One side note: If you take care to turn power off before you unplug it, and if you always keep batteries in it, all your EQ, volume and etc settings will stay in place. If it's turned off when you change batteries the settings will even still be there when you get the new batteries in. Capacitors rock. :)
Overall construction is great. This thing isn't rock-heavy, but it feels put together solid. I don't have to worry about the cassette or cd lid breaking off I think. The radio picks up stations fairly well, although I didn't personally test that much. Having more than 3,500 songs on my player, I seldom listen to radio. ;)
Just buy it already. It's about as good as a Bose (tm) speaker set, and it costs a lot less. Even if you just use the mp3 player port, just the speakers alone are worth the price.
