Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony Cybershot DSCW120/B 7.2MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot (Black)

Customer Review: Very good all-around point and shoot
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I recently upgraded from our Sony DSC-P8 to a Sony DSC-W130. So far we are extremely happy. We shopped around quite a bit before settling on the new cybershot, and spent a good deal of time trying out other brands. In the end, the Smile Shutter brought us back to Sony. It sounds like there is no way it would work, but it really does. We have two young children that are remarkably hard to catch smiling. With the new Sony, all we have to do is turn on the smile shutter and the camera does the rest. So far, we haven't missed a smile with the 3 year (with teeth) and have caught a few of the 4 month old (no teeth). It makes a difference.

The other feature that has been great so far is the burst mode. With my old camera, the missing time between shot resulted in a lot of blurring. The new camera manages to focus each shot much better. We played around with some moving targets, and the pictures came out great. One major drawback of burst mode, however, is that you can't use flash. I took a bunch of pictures indoors and the quality was ok, but not great. The flash just turns off when you switch to burst mode.

The video recording is great on this camera. Obviously not camcorder quality or anything, but very good for what you'd expect from a point and shoot. The sound quality still isn't that great, but much much better from my older camera. It seems like it balances the audio in the first few seconds. If the first few seconds are loud, the whole video will be softer. If you start out soft, however, you bury the needle when it gets lounder leading to some distortion. You also can't zoom while in video mode - something they don't tell you.

The flash recharges after about 1-2 seconds, which is great. It also is pretty effective for long distances.

I like the menu configurations, especially now that I've had some time to play with them.

Picture quality is great, but I'm upgrading from a 2MP camera, so it probably wouldn't take too much to wow me. We took a ton of shots and were impressed at the level of detail when we zoomed in on our computer.

Overall, we are very happy with this camera. It has some limitations and problems, but for the money (and for being a point and shoot) it is great.

Customer Review: Great Camera!
Summary: 5 Stars

Before purchasing the Sony Cybershot DSCW120 I owned a Fujifilm digital camera. The camera was all around a good camera, but the pictures weren't as clear as I wanted them and it was a little bulky. Then I lost the battery and really wasn't sure if i wanted to spend the money to purchase a new one.
Then last week, I went onto Amazon and looked at camera's and got interested in buying a new Camera. Since I wanted something light, small, preferably black, takes clear pictures, and good reviews, I came across this Sony Cybershot. After reading all the review (which im a first review, then buy person) I was Sold. The next day I went to Circuit City and purchased the Camera, a case, screen protector, and of the course the $30 dollar memory card.
I took it home, turned it on and just started snapping pictures. The pictures were clear as day, even in low lighting areas. I tried using the Face Smile setting, which was a little confusing in the beginning, but after playing around, was actually really cool.
Another thing that I love is that when slidding the wheel, like when going to auto, face smile, video, etc, tells you what each setting is.
Example: When turing the wheel to Twilight is says "shoot low light scene using tripod". I think this is an awesome setting when turning the wheel and not really know what your turning to and have to either play around or resorting to the manual.
Overall I think this is an awesome camera thats light, a pocket size, and shoots crisp clear pictures. For the 200 dollars I spent, I cannot be happier.

Customer Review: Great Quality Pictures, Isn't this what you want in a camera?
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a professional photographer and I have used many cameras. I own a few point-n-shoots because they are easier to use and they function fine for most applications. But the quality of my previous digital cameras aren't any where near the quality of this camera. The DSCW120 focuses amazingly well. I tried zooming in on an image of a cat and each hair was crystal clear, even in medium to low light. This is a leap year ahead of the Sanyo point-n-shoot camera I own, which is awful at quick autofocusing.

I would recommend this camera to people wanting high quality for a reasonable rate. The only issues I have with this camera is that it takes a proprietary battery. It would have been much better if they used AA or AAA batteries instead. This camera also uses a "Duo/PRO Duo Card", a very small memory card, not the SD cards which are cheaper, easier to find, and are just as fast.

All in all, I give this camera a 4.5 out of 5 stars. If it used AA batteries and an SD card I would give it a perfect 5.

I wish camera manufacturers would listen to me!

Customer Review: Very fast and efficient, almost error proof.

I just bought this camera about 9 hours ago and am very happy with it. I also own a sony camera with a carl zeiss lens that is about 4 years old. that camera has held up very well and has given me some amazing pictures. when i saw this it reminded me of my older sony and has a lot of the same features and qualities.

when you take a picture with most older cameras you have to hold the camera very still and breathe gently or your result will be blurry. with this camera you can probably be jogging and still take a clear picture.

there isn't any fuzz or discoloration between pixels (like some other 7 megapixel cameras have) and its light settings are awesome.

i would recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a very high quality pictures without having to have any experience in photography.
and if you do have quite a bit of experience with photography (like i do) then it makes the job a lot easier for macro, low light, and bright conditions.

Customer Review: Excellent Camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not going to restate how good this camera is since the top three reviews prove that already. But, I did have to chime in on one slight problem you will need to watch for after purchase. When in the "Twilight" mode, which literally allows you to make great shots with a flash in a pitch black room or area, you MUST use a tripod. On this setting, the camera becomes extremely sensitive to movement from your hand. Even the pulse from your finger. If there is a light source within the view, it will streak oddly, leaving you wondering "How did that happen? It's cool, but how?" Using a tripod keeps this problem from happening. I took a picture of the corner of my bedroom the other night (in total darkness), after I got the camera, and the LED numbers from my clock streaked up in a line toward the ceiling. Everything else in the shot was fine, just the illumination of the LEDs was affected. Other than this small imperfection, this camera is a must-have.
