Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony D-NF340 CD Walkman & MP3 Player w/FM Tuner

Customer Review: Nice player, user interface needs work
Summary: 4 Stars

I needed a player that would play audiobooks (CD's) for my daily commute via the bus, so after researching the few options available (there just aren't that many portable CD players made any more it seems) I settled on this one.

I've been using it for a month now, and it's performed very well. It looks and feels "cheap" but I haven't had any problems with it (yet). I like how it remembers where you left off (very important for audiobooks!) and will start right up from there next time.

The only real gripe I have with this thing is that I find it extremely counter-intuitive to use. I guess we've all gotten spoiled with the ipod and similar devices. There are a number of functions like turning the power off, or setting or playing from a bookmark, that are a lot more complex than they need to be. And the "user manual" is horrible.

In any case, I'm pleased with my purchase overall. There isn't another player that I've seen that I'd rather have, so I guess that's the bottom line.

Customer Review: Good sound and quite durable
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been using this for a year and it's quite durable and sounds very good. I treat it roughly for daily use putting in my bag and commute for 2 hours go and back almost everyday. But it didn't get even a scratch and still working perfectly. I am using rechargeable batteries for it, so I don't have to worry about the battery life and costs of them, and environmental friendliness. Since Sony Japan has already stopped making high end portable cd players, this is the highest model available in the market now. I have a few high end models of CD Walkman, but for a portable use, listening to music outside, sound quality of this is good enough, better than almost all mp3 players even listening to the same mp3 sources. You can encode your favorite CD's with lame insane 320 without worrying about its capacity limit. I recommend to use good headphone (HD25, ER4P, etc) with it and listing to your CD's, then it would be almost same as you are bringing out a decent audio set which may cost 100x more.

Customer Review: MP3 CD Player
Summary: 4 Stars

This CD player was purchased to add MP3 capability to a radio which can play standard CDs or tapes so that Books-on-Tapes could be heard. If your music is through an iPod this isn't for you, you don't need it. If your library has texts, novels, etc. in MP3 format this is for you. Sound quality is excellent although I use my own ear phones or plug it into the audio input of my radio (make certain your radio has one). It is fully portable and could easily be used with a 'Boom-Box'. Battery life is average and you can purchase a small transformer if you want to use it with house outlets. I really haven't had it long enough to comment on durability. The FM adds nothing but may have appeal to some, the issue is reception as there is no antenna tospeak of.

Customer Review: great for CDs, not so for MP3
Summary: 4 Stars

Like some other reviewers, I put a lot of stock in Johnny Hodges' long and detailed review, in choosing this product. I'm very happy with it as a CD player that can go with me to the gym and on walks, and hardly ever skip. Sound quality is very good (with my own earphones) and I don't hear background noise as some others report. However if you want to play MP3s, get an MP3 player for two reasons: Playing an MP3 CD will do in a set of new batteries in a little over an hour; you can't move from one track to another, even if the tracks were recorded from different CDs. You can ONLY play from start to finish. As to the radio function, it's fine, but I'd rather use my tiny pocket Radio Shack radio, with sound just as good.

Customer Review: Good value, easy to use, great sound
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great portable CD player, Sony quaity. I especially like that it returns to my place if paused, so I don't have to scroll. The controls are easily to see and to operate. The only things I don't like are the differences between it and an mp3 player. Everything's a trade-off, and for those things I have to listen to in CD format, this player is ideal. I have a case for over my shoulder or around my neck, because the belt-style cases don't suit my formal type of dress. I haven't had it long enough to comment on durability.
