Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony DPF-V900 9-Inch Digital Photo Frame

Customer Review: Way to many BUGS - Sony how could you?
Summary: 2 Stars

My first impression of the Sony DPF-V900 is that the looks are great, and the funtionality is promissing. I was surprised that it doesn't read the latest SDHC memory cards - which everyone will soon be using.

The directions are not even correct, it will NOT use the menu button out of the box with the remote. You must firt either transfer your own pictures or have it read a device.

It also will NOT read all JPG images. I have many jpg images that I converted to black and white using irfanview (probably one of the most common photo tool applications) and the device will NOT SHOW THE PICTURES. It just puts a question mark in it's place. Just to make sure it wasn't a defective jpg, I opened the image in Internet Explorer, MS Paint, and Firefox - it's definately a sony problem since I also emailed the black and white photos to many friends and family and nobody had a problem.

Also, I noticed another bug in the date and time if you try and used the Year/Month/Day setting. It's off by about 24 hours or so, what good is a clock and calendar that is always wrong. This is an issue for me, since my wife is from Europe and using the US or European style time and clock is confusing to her or me.

So, you would think with all these bugs in the first 5 minutes of using this product that sony would have caught wind of the problems in their quality testing and released a new firmware update - but on the sony style site, they only try to give you brochures, an instruction manual and a bunch of "accessories" that you can purchase.

Give me a break, if I want to purchase a $39 dollar HDMI cable, I'll let you know; but how about a product that actually does what you advertise, like show pictures, and have a working clock and calendar? Shame on you Sony, you should be pushing firmware updates to fix all the bugs, rather then trying to sell me accessories.

I give you 2 stars for image quality and style - nice try but this is a dud, please fix the product - for over $200 I expected much more. I feel like returning for a much cheaper competitor that can actually show ALL MY PHOTOS.

Customer Review: HDMI Output?
Summary: 2 Stars

I was very impressed with this frame's style, picture quality and features. The selling point, however, was the fact that it comes equipped with an HDMI output that can connect to an HDTV for high definition viewing of digital photos. After making the necessary connections from the frame to the TV, the picture appeared jittery on my Sony Wega HDTV. What's that line again? Sony HDNA? Surely, this must be a manufacturing defect, so I returned the frame in exchange for another, only to experience the same problem with the replacement. Having contacted Sony support, tested the connection with TWO HDMI cables, and hooking up my MacBook Pro to the HDMI input on my Sony Wega, I know the problem is not with the cable or the TV. Be advised, you may not get what you're hoping to get by connecting this frame to your HDTV. If you're only going to use it as a photo frame, it's a wonderful product. Also, it's fairly disconcerting to know that NO site reviews out there made any mention of this defect or having tested the HDMI connection on an HDTV.

Customer Review: Finicky with JPEG
Summary: 2 Stars

Despite being warned on this message board about the device not displaying certain jpeg format pictures
that were generated by other tools such as Adobe Photoshop, I decided to go ahead and purchase it anyway.
Sadly, the warnings were confirmed. Some of the pictures that I wanted to display were from more than 20 years ago which obviously were scanned and processed using Photoshop on my Mac. The jpegs were not displayable on the DPF.
The Web was not of much help.
I finally did manage to get it all working (somewhat of a kluge).
I imported the non-DPF-displayable jpegs to Adobe Flash and then simply turned around and exported as
a jpeg. The resulting jpeg is DCF compliant (the only kind Sony can display).
Obviously, this is not a clean solution because it assumes you have the Adobe CS tools.
But if you are into digitizing old film photographs and want to display them on the DPF, this might help.

Customer Review: Poor Quality Control
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a very attractive product. Great picture, easy to understand and to use. However, the first one we received had many minor features that were malfunctioning -- of most interest to us was the automatic image orientation. We sent it back for a new one which did not have any of the other faults, but the image orientation still was non-fustional, so with regret, we gave up on it.

Instead we bought an Audiovox DVD player which does all the Sony Picture Frame does, and plays movies (and costs less). In addition the Audiovox has a 2 hour battery for portability, which is a major deficit on the Sony.

Customer Review: Really disappointed and a little irritated
Summary: 1 Stars

I am big Sony fan, laptops, monitors, camera, TVs, etc. I just purchased a new laptop and flat screen TV this week.

I purchased two of these frames for the holidays and literally wasted my weekend trying to load them with pictures in an failed attempt to get it to work. I had read the reviews and thought I was buying a good device. The only problem is it turned out that the reviewers were not doing their job. Bottom line, if you do anything with your photos in other software programs good luck trying to get them to display in this Sony frame. On my cheap photo frames I have no problem displaying any image from my computer but not on this beautiful piece of junk.

I thought it was me and I did a lot of testing with lots of files, several computers, different photo software, and of course two of these Sony frames that I purchased and now have to return. Then I started reading things like this in the documentation: "A file...may not be displayed with the photo frame, even if it can be displayed with a computer...the image file may not be supported by the photo frame because, for example, it is a JPEG file that was created with your computer." I seldom read documentation by the way, but I was really frustrated and having not read anything so ridiculous in a long time I needed a good laugh. I mean it is almost 2010, many of us have been using software for decades, simple stuff should just work these days, and I needed to sit back and get perspective on the holidays. All of this mad rush to buy all of these holiday gadgets really isn't what it was suppose to be all about.

This is one of my favorite sentences: "Due to one of the characteristics of the device, images stored for a long time or read many times may be subject to data error when read too often." Can you imagine that! An image that is stored for a long time may be subject to data error when read too often!!! How much is a long time or read too often?

One of the last lines in the documentation is: "Even if you perform [Format internal memory], the data in the internal memory may not be erased completely. When you dispose of the photo frame, we recommend that you physically destroy the photo frame." Now there is a line for sustainability, 'built to last' and the environment. Maybe they are really trying to say, "Look, you are really going to get frustrated with this photo frame, so don't send it back, don't give it to someone you dislike, go ahead and just smash it with a big hammer. You will feel better."

If all you do is plug in your photo card, maybe you would be happy with this device. I guess there are people out there like that. I know my 88 year old mother would be one of them. Maybe that is Sony's market for this frame. At 88 my mother isn't likely to store an image too long or read it too often to cause any data error.
