Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony DVP-FX820 8-Inch Portable DVD Player, BlackCustomer Review: Great compromise player Summary: 5 Stars
I just received and tried out this player. I got it because my wife thought a Panasonic 10.3" player was too big; and to tell the truth, its size overwhelmed me, too.
The battery came nearly fully charged, and I was able to play a DVD without reading the manual. One of the reasons I like this player is it has the capability of accepting composite video and audio from another source, as well as sending it to another source. The A/V Inputs and Outputs are the same ports, they are switch selected. I had to read the manual, and go all the way to the back of it to realize the Digital Audio Out connection is also for Audio I/O. The two headphones jacks are seperate from the Audio Digital Out port.
I haven't quite decided which DTV to Standard TV adapter I'm going to get, but I'll make sure it has composite Video Outputs so I can use the Adapter/DVD Player combination as a portable Digital TV. I have an extra indoor TV Antenna I can use to acquire signals already.
The speaker's volume isn't overwhelming, but will be good enough for all the people you can get around the DVD player to watch. It is pretty tiny, but considering the size of the speaker, its not surprising.
I tried some cheap headphones at home, and I had to turn the volume almost all the way up to overcome the ambient room noise. No way is there going to be enough volume to overcome the cabin noise of an airliner. I have that covered, though. Also, the player has a volume control, but not for individual outputs.
I am an aspiring pilot, and I have a high end headset with active noise reduction. In the apartment, when I turn them on, the ambient noise goes away, and the DVD sound is sweet. Of course, this headset cost 3 times as much as the DVD player.
Amazon sells some pretty good ANR headsets. They are about 1/3rd the price of Bose's ANR headsets, and the reviewers say they are much more durable than Bose's. As I'm using the aircraft ANR headsets, I don't need them.
My headset has the capability for using a cell phone (while you are on the ground). It came with two adapter cords. One works with my cell phone, the other with the DVD player. You can also get a stereo phone plug to mini-phone plug adapter from Amazon, Radio Shack, or a myriad of other places.
Now, I need to get a carrying case for the player.
Customer Review: Excellent Value Summary: 5 Stars
I did a lot of research before deciding on this purchase, and I agree with many of the other reviewers that this is an excellent value for the money. The screen resolution makes for a clear, crisp picture, and the sound is loud and clear. I use this product almost daily, as I do not own a television or a computer, and rely on the Sony DVP-FX820 to be my primary source of film-related entertainment. Fortunately, the player is not overly sensitive to scratches and smudges on DVDs. I have retired my previous portable DVD player made by another manufacturer, and there is really no comparison. I believe this is by far the best quality player in its price class. It can be set to play full-size (rather than widescreen) DVDs with letter-boxing on the sides. While there are larger-screen DVD players available in a similar price range, the high-resolution screen on this one makes for a MUCH better picture quality. I cannot speak to the battery life as I have not used that feature (I use the player at home). The swivel screen is very nice, and the body of the player feels sturdy. The accompanying user guide is well-written and useful. I would highly recommend this player to others. Sony has earned my confidence as a consumer, and I am very likely to purchase other Sony products in the future.
Customer Review: Good DVD player Summary: 5 Stars
I have had this DVD player for a couple of months and have found nothing wrong with it. I am happy with the picture quality and the sound. With my older DVD player you needed to use earphones in the car or you couldn't hear it over the car noises. I have no problems with this Sony being able to hear it in the car. I like the swivel screen and that you can still access all the control buttons just below the screen.
Another reviewer said that you couldn't fast forward or rewind without the remote control. The "enter" button that is located between the "options" button and the "return" button allows you to both FF and REW.
I am very happy with the battery life. I get at least 5 hours out of the battery and I didn't change any of the settings and I haven't used earphones at all. I charge the battery right before I am going to use it because I have noticed that the battery discharges when you aren't using it for a period of time. My older DVD player did this also.
I really like the "hold" function on this unit because it locks the buttons so that my grandkids can't mess with them when they are watching a movie.
I highly recommend this DVD player.
Customer Review: Superb monitor as well as a DVD player Summary: 5 Stars
I use this portable player as a larger monitor than the cam's swing out LCD both framing, focusing and for shooting angles where the flip out is less than practical.
The screen will twist and flip so it is lying flat against the player which makes it easier to mount on a bracket for tripod use.
The speakers are about as tinny as all the other portables, but that is why they have a headphone jack on these portables and speaking of that this one has two built in headphone jacks.
All the controls are handily on the bottom of the screen section so are accessible even when you have the unit folded against the player portion and it also comes with a remote control.
The resolution of this portable's monitor is hands above any other I have owned, used or seen.
The battery lasts a pleasantly nice amount of time as well.
It has played DVD-R, -RW, +R and +RW, DL, CD, CD-RW, MP3 and digital photos for me in both 4:3 and 16:9 dimensions.
Not sure what else you could ask out of a portable unit, fully recommend this player/monitor.
Customer Review: Excellent Product Summary: 5 Stars
I first purchased a Panasonic portable dvd player pretty much on impulse at the store because the price was good. When I got home I read the reviews (I know, that's kind of a backwards way to do it, but then it was an impulse buy) and they weren't so good. After doing more research, it seemed this Sony unit came out the best so I returned the Panasonic and bought the Sony.
I am very happy with my purchase. What I like about this product is the build quality, the picture quality, and the swivel feature. Many portable players lack the swivel feature. This is a very convenient thing to have. And as far as picture quality and build quality, Sony is a reliable company for those two things. It is very well made, the accessories are also first rate, and the instruction manual is a real manual that is understandable and grammatically correct. Two thumbs up on this purchase! This Sony was more expensive that most of the other players but it is worth the extra cost. If you figure your cost per period of time you use it and the enjoyment factor, this one is actually the better deal.
