I purchased this to replace an older unit with a failed rechargable LI-ion battery. The price was attractive on Amazon - not a lot more than a replacement external battery pack. But...the picture is a fantastic improvement over the old technology!
I have played more than 30 DVDs and have had no problems. The controls on the display panel are a bit confusing but the remote is very user friendly. The battery will play about 3 movies without recharge. Not the longest out there but plenty long enough for my needs - even international travel.
I'd recommend this unit with no reservations.

I originally bought the Philips DCP851 8.5-Inch Portable DVD Player with Ipod Dock but was unhappy with the quality and returned it. After doing my research I decided to spend a little extra and buy this player. 2 years later I'm still very happy with my purchase. It's been used constantly by my kids, dropped a few times, had food spilled on it and it still looks and sounds great. I've noticed a little decline in battery life so we just leave it plugged in most of the time but it can still make it through a 3 hour car ride with no problems. I'm extremely pleased overall and would recommend this product to anyone.Customer Review: Outstanding Product

Battery life is excellent. Can twist the screen around like a tablet PC to hold. This covers the open button for the DVD. You can also lock the buttons so that small children can touch the buttons without any effect. Great for traveling anywhere, in any mode of transportation. (especially for flying where there is no electrical outlet) Comes with a car charger and an AC adapter but the battery should suffice for 4 - 6 hours. Sound is good with or without earphones. Picture is good too. A little more expensive than the rest, but well worth it. Very nicely designed.Customer Review: Awesome portable player

Just returned from a week long vacation with the portable player. Great picture. The sound isn't full range. No bass, but it is perfectly mid and highs for cars to cut through road noise. Sounds way better in the car than my laptop.
The 6 hours battery is rated with brightness at lowest, which is almost not viewable. Expect closer to 4 hours. I like how both the standard electrical and car power adapter are included.
I didn't do the car DVD holder. My kids like it on their lap then angle the screen way back

We bought this for the kids for our recent road trip and we are very happy with it. Great picture quality and I love that it has a remote. The volume is incredible. You DON'T have to have headphones on to hear it in the car. We used this in conjunction with the "In-Car" 7-9" portable dvd player case also sold on Amazon so we could hang it up behind and between the two front seats so our three kids could watch it at the same time. This way you only have to buy one player instead of for each child. Would definitely recommend this player to anyone!
