Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player, BlackCustomer Review: Excellent Replacement Summary: 5 Stars
I own a Sony dvd player (model #DVP-NS300) which I've had for over three years and have easily played 400+ movies on it. The past few months it's started randomly freezing up while playing and jumping back to previous chapters. It wasn't the discs because they would play on my computer or a no name brand I got at Wally world for next to nothing. All my movies are either brand new discs or used ones I purchased on sale from the local video stores. I don't own anything but legit discs; none of mine are "burned".
I was reluctant to buy another Sony after some of the reviews I've read on here, especially the one about freezing up just like my old player has started doing. But I decided to take the risk figuring I'd return it if it didn't pass my "acid test" which is a movie I couldn't get to play all the way through, even on my computer which has played everything I've put into it up to that point. This disc is wickedly scratched. I bought the Sony DVP-NS57P/B from a local store today because it was on sale for the same price offered here, and figured it would be easier to return if it didn't pass my acid test.
I'm happy to report it not only passed my test 100% but has a couple of features my old model didn't have. It has a Slow Play and Fast Play, both with sound. You can play a movie up to 4 times faster or slower and still listen to it. The sound matches the speed of the video, but it doesn't sound like Donald Duck or some drunken slur. You can actually understand it. Another thing I like about it is the Zoom feature. It zooms in x2 or x4, which is really great if the credits are small.
The one drawback is I don't like the new remote as well as the old one. It's boxier with sharp corners, a couple of inches longer, silver instead of black, and doesn't fit my hand as well. The silver color makes it easier to locate in low light, but I could operate the old remote in the dark whereas this new remote will take some getting used to because everything has been moved around or made smaller. The old remote works with the new player, but the old remote doesn't have the F/S Play or Zoom buttons.
I HIGHLY recommend this player since it seems to be an upgrade from my old model which I was very happy with all along. Who knows, maybe in another three years and another 400+ movies I'll need to replace this one too, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
Customer Review: Great player for DVDs and MP3 CDs Summary: 5 Stars
Seems like I'm the only person who will praise this player for its MP3 playback. I do have a portable MP3 player, but I also have all of my MP3s burned to CD, not only for backup, but for playback as well. Pop an MP3 CD in, and its like having a 10 disc changer. The on screen display is great, as it displays ENTIRE names and titles, something my other DVD player could not do. Everything was abbreviated. It also displays ID3 tag info. Sounds great. Another nice touch is after about 15 minutes of continuous playback, a screensaver comes up. Again, my other DVD player displayed the menu screen as long as the CD was in the player. I will echo other comments about being disappointed with no optical output.
As far as DVD playback, I find that to be excellent as well. I did buy an "upscaling" player with HDMI prior to this one. I did not see anything to get excited about, and personally I think upscalers are a sham. So, in my opinion, component video out is the best you'll see in lieu of going all the way to Blu-Ray. I don't use Netflix, and all of my DVDs and CDs are handled with care, so this playback of scratched up discs is something I wouldn't know about. Personally, I think it's hilarious that there is a need for such a feature. But, most people are negligent in their care of discs, so go figure. But, this is a great player, and I think its MP3 functionality should be praised. It's a shame that it would be overlooked. BTW, does a great job with JPGs on CD as well. If it is missing anything, it would be CD+G playback. But, I can live without that.
Customer Review: Best I've found for scratched DVD's and DVD+/-R Summary: 5 Stars
My DVD player was several years old, and wouldn't play scratched DVD's, and frequently choked on my home-burned DVD's. After reading all the reviews about how well this model handles less-than-perfect DVD's and DVD-R/DVD+R, I bought this model.
I'm happy to report that this player doesn't miss a beat. It has successfully read ALL my scratched DVD's and home-made DVD's that my old player didn't like, without a single hiccup. I also have another decent DVD player that would choke on only 4 of my DVD/R's, and all 4 of those work perfectly in the Sony also.
If you use NetFlix, this is a great player since many of their DVD's are scratched by previous renters.
This is a great value for the money - since it plays all the DVD's that other players have problems with, it would still be a good deal if it cost twice as much. It doesn't have an S-video output, but it does have component output, which is better video quality than S-video anyway. One correction to a prior review - someone said this unit is not made in China - maybe that was true last year, but the new ones are made in China. It's hard to find ANYTHING which isn't made in China any more; as long as the manufacturer maintains quality control over it's products, it really doesn't matter in what country they place their factory.
Customer Review: Great DVD player for Netflix discs Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to purchase an inexpensive DVD player for two main reasons: a player that would play Netflix discs without freezing, and a player that would last a couple of years until the Blue-Ray players came down in price.
Since I only bought this player last month, I can't judge how long it will last. However, it has been outstanding at playing the 11 Netflix discs that I've watched so far. And some of those discs were heavily scratched. I'm assuming the progressive scan is what did the trick. One disc did give it a little trouble (the player paused a second or so), but then handled it without losing any of the scene.
The player has two more features that I like:
- You can turn it off while watching a movie, and then pick it back up at that same point the next time you turn it on. It will actually remember your position for up to six DVD's! My last Sony player had the "remember" feature, but would only remember one DVD.
- The player, on your screen, can divide a DVD into sections and show you the beginning scene for each section. This is really handy for those movies that don't have a scenes index.
It was also easy to setup and has a very low profile, so it doesn't take up much room.
Customer Review: A very reliable item at a great price! Summary: 5 Stars
A large proportion of my viewing these days involves discs of my own creation. Unfortunately my older generation Sony DVD player was either unable to read those discs at all or the discs would freeze at some point and then refuse to be played further.
Considering that my older player had cost much more than this newer one I was fearful that I might be wasting my money; nevertheless, I did like the fact that it had the ability to play mp3s and jpeg files, which my older unit did not, so I decided to take a chance.
Setting up the unit was a breeze. After two months of use, I can honestly say that I have never had a single disc rejected as being unplayable or even had one freeze during play. Unlike what I have read from some other reviewers I don't think that the unit takes too long to perform an initial read of a disc. I simply insert a disc and usually by the time that I have walked back to the couch and gotten comfortable, it is ready to play.
All in all, I would say that I am very pleased with this unit and the price for a "name" brand is hard to beat!
