Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony DVP-NS700H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player, Black

Customer Review: Best of breed
Summary: 5 Stars

If all you're looking for is a DVD player, this newly released Sony is simply unbeatable. It replaces the popular, top-rated DVP-NS77, which is still available, but since Sony has lowered the price by about twenty bucks while retaining all of the specs of the NS77, there's little reason to look at another "upconverting," "upscaling" player unless it's a Blue Ray drive. This Sony provides a sharp and steady picture, is exceptionally trim and slim (a tad shallower than the NS77), and offers the user multiple options for adjustments to things like aspect ratio, image sharpness, contrast levels and black ratios, surround sound vs. normal stereo. The darn thing even comes with onboard music for home-made JPEG discs that lack it, and it controls most functions of a Sony TV.

Sony recorders are another story. As one of the Big 4 companies in the distribution of movies and CDs, Sony is notorious for not only issuing the usual legal threats but for engineering their recorders to reject copyrighted material. Those in the market for a DVD recorder might do better to check out the Toshiba DR410, which is priced so attractively it can be forgiven in the event it too balks at recording certain programs due to legal issues.

Customer Review: Great Blu-Ray Alternative
Summary: 5 Stars

I debated buying a Blu-Ray player for some time, and ended up purchasing this instead. After seeing what the upconverting will do for my existing DVD's, I decided that the premium for the Blu-Ray player just wasn't worth it, especially considering the fact that Blu-Ray discs are more expensive and it doesn't look like anyone will stop making standard DVD's any time soon.

This player gives me a fantastic picture when connected to my Sony Bravia TV via HDMI. Most people really can't distinguish between the picture from an upconverted DVD and a true hi-def picture from Blu-Ray. Also, if you have a Sony TV, the Bravia Sync feature is a nice addition. Its not a "must-have", but it adds a lot of convenience by eliminating some steps when switching from watching TV to watching a DVD, which is a boon for my wife when she wants to put something on for the kids.

I've only had this player for about a month, so I can't speak to how well it will hold up, but so far I'm very pleased with this unit. And, as I mentioned, the cost gives this player real added value. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone considering Blu-Ray but a little wary of the price.

Customer Review: Fits my needs....
Summary: 5 Stars

To celebrate the dreaded DTV change-over debacle, I decided to get a new DTV and a DVD player. Unfortunately, the only TV that would fit in my cabinet was limited to 32". Since the "720 vs 1080" debate doesn't seem to matter as much in TV's under 40", I went with a 32" 720 Sony Bravia from Sam's Club and saved a few bucks. Now, for the DVD player, I had to decide between an up-converting model or Blu-Ray (B-R). Here again, not sure if I could notice a significant difference with my 720 TV, I decided to go with the Sony up-converting DVD player rather than a B-R. Besides saving a couple of hundred dollars, the image is FANTASTIC. I can't imagine it getting much better without a significant hemorrhage of cash from my wallet. Besides, who knows if the B-R phenomenon will ever really take hold? By the time it does (in this dismal economy), there will likely be something "bigger and better" out there anyway. Yes, I know there will be 'fire, brimstone and gnashing of teeth' from persnickety videophiles who read this - but, I am completely satisfied with my meager setup - it does me good.

Customer Review: WoW! Great picture quality
Summary: 5 Stars

Picked up one of these units today to replace an ailing ten year-old Pioneer DV-414 DVD player. Was looking for something inexpensive and this Sony unit seemed to fit the bill. Was really impressed at how much better the picture quality was. Even with me still using old technology (CRT based television). My one and only complaint is a old pet peeve of mine - which is having the manual control buttons on the unit black with black icons. Would it really kill people to have icons/text you could see on consumer grade A/V equipment? Heck, I would even like to see the logos/letter being made out of glow-in-the-dark sort of plastic or paint. Remote control is a decent design - good size buttons and clearly labeled. Nice 70 page user manual - very easy to read and actually has a useful index for looking up specific information. Unit also came with a basic set of cables (RCA variety) and a set of AA batteries for the remote.

I got this because the blu-ray players are still too expensive.
This player works very good, the only thing I don't like is that it does not show the chapter # on the display on the dvd player itself , but if you press the DISPLAY button you can see it on the screen.
If you hook up yours through HDMI you also get sound through it on the tv, so no need to run any other wire other than hdmi(mine is hooked up through a receiver).
You get a nice blue led light as well.

I got a Phillips model 1 day before this one then replaced it with this sony one because it did not have a fiber optic out for the sound and when I tried to hook up the red/white rca to the receiver , my speakers and especially the sub made a very loud humming noise (the picture wasn't as good either).
With the fiber optic , it IS perfect !!!!!!!

"Get it, you won't regret it" .
