Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony DVP-NS710H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player, BlackCustomer Review: Plays home made mp3 disks Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for a friend of mine who wanted a way to play home made mp3 disks through her home stereo. Her older cd player couldn't do it. I did research on line and found some inexpensive players that said they could play mp3 disks, but I decided to make sure before buying. So I took two home made mp3 disks to Frys Electronics and tried them in 15 different players. Although the advertising may have said they could play mp3 disks, most of them wouldn't play the ones I brought. Only the Sony DVP-NS710H and one other one could. The Sony was the least expensive of the two. So I bought the Sony and hooked it up to her stereo and it played everything she had. I'm glad I didn't just believe the advertising and buy a less expensive player that said it could play mp3 disks without testing them first. But now that I have done the testing, I wrote this review so other people who may be looking for a player with mp3 capability that can play whatever disks they may have will know that this one can so they don't have to test them first. It seems nobody else reviewed this feature. The Sony DVP-NS710H gets 5 stars from me for doing exactly what I was looking for. Having said that, it is not even hooked up to a television, so you will have to rely on other reviews for the video features. A couple of other notes about the mp3 capability: Some of her mp3 disks have a large number of tracks. But you can select any track using the numerical keypad on the remote, and the display on the front of the player shows the number of the track that is playing. But this only works if the tracks are not inside different folders on the disk. If the tracks are inside different folders, you have to advance to the next folder manually using the "next" button on the remote. Once inside the folder you can select the tracks in that folder using the keypad. There is no shuffle play or random play as you might have on a cd player. You can either play tracks sequentially in the order they are in on the disk or select a particular track using the keypad or "skip" button. There is a volume control on the remote but it does not appear to do anything when playing an mp3 disk connected with standard audio out cables. We had to control the volume using the receiver. No big deal, that's what she was used to doing anyway.
