Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony HDR-SR12 10.2MP 120GB High Definition Hard Drive Handycam Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized ZoomCustomer Review: Superior Camera Summary: 5 Stars
This camcorder is phenomenal! The shots are beautiful and clear - the auto focus is very intuitive. The sound is fantastic. I love this camcorder. This takes very high grade professional videos in HD. I love that it shoots in widescreen.
I haven't had any problems with the software it came with; but if you don't like it then you can rest assured that you don't have to use it much. The only thing I've used the software for is to open the videos; you can immediately and easily convert them to a different file type (using the software); then you can use any software you want to work with them.
I've seen a lot of people give bad reviews for items because they didn't like the software it came with. In my opinion that's a bit like saying you hate a cereal because you didn't like your free toy surprise. The software is a bonus; it's the company's way of insuring that the buyer is able to use every part of their new device. The free software discs aren't generally intended to be your primary video editing software - they're just included for convenience.
This camera so far is excellent; I'm beginning my career as a filmmaker and I bought this camera to help me make a high quality film portfolio for grad school. I was absolutely right to do so - this camera will definitely help me make high quality films. (I actually bought two because it's almost impossible to do an entire film with one camera, even with a dolly.) Both cameras work great!
Customer Review: A 5-Star Camcorder Indeed! Summary: 5 Stars
I'll keep this short and sweet... After "purchasing" and "returng" camcorders to different stores in my area; FINALLY I found what I was looking for in a video camera... I just cannot begin to explain how crystal clear this camera shoots... Everyone I show the previews on the screen to want to either buy one or jokingly tell me if they can have my camera... The kicker is that it behaves extremely well in low-light situations... the best I've seen so far (and the reason why I returned so many camcorders after trying them out for a couple of days)... This is a no-brainer... The Sony HDR-SR12 is THE camcorder to get... Recording in space saving SP is incredible but when I switch to the highest setting (FH) the picture details became almost three dimensional... The fact that it has a Carl Zeiss lens doesn't hurt either... Beware who you buy online from as I did get burned by a New York based internet company (who shall remain unnamed... NOT AMAZON mind you)... They played a major bait and switch where I ended up paying at least $200 overprice... but oh well, live and learn... buy it here on Amazon and play it safe... 5 Star Camcorder and I can't even imagine how much any company can improve on image quality in the future after seeing what the SR12 can do!
Customer Review: Great Camera Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this camera now for about 2 weeks. I love it. It's small, light and the battery it comes with lasts long enough for me. However I did buy a Sony case which came with a smaller battery. The other day I was at an outsite restaruant with a perosn singing and playing guitar. Since it was at night the light was very low. The video and audio came out awesome. This camera does very well in low light. The software it came with is okay for simple viewing and some small edits (can crop lenght only I think, can't murge files). I was able to find a plug for Adobe Premeier however I have not yet had a chance to test it. It's a great camera with a nice feel of quality. If you have an older Sony camera and purchaced the optional lenses, they should fit.
The only negative I have found so far is that you can not send video into this camera, such as another camera or VCR. I have an older Canon minidv camera which has inputs so you can back up old analog tapes to digital. For example, older 8mm tapes. I still have the Canon so this in not really an issue for me.
I'm heading to France next week with my wife and I'm looking forward to taking this every where I go.
Customer Review: Sony SR12 - just get it - it's perfect! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had my SR12 for about a month now. It's a wonderful video camera with amazing HD picture quality.
I just shot a friend's daughter's wedding (for free - for fun) and he said it looked like it was done by a professional. Some of the darker dance floor scenes were a bit troublesome (slightly grainy/out of focus at times - most of it was great!) - everything was shot on full automatic mode with no light settings/adjustments - I'm still learning what this camera can/can't do).
It's still a great piece of technology. I shot many of my son's high-school outdoor soccer games - both daylight and at night under the lights - came out PERFECT! And WOW is it great just playing back on my HD TV. Amazing.
Now, for the software/editing issue: It's a non-issue. Get a computer. Not your 4-yr old P4. I've got a yr-old Quad Core - works great with Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate software. I burn DVDs AND Blu-Rays with this set-up and it looks fabulous!
Ask away if you have any questions. I learned from other people's comments and I'm more than happy to share.

Customer Review: Great Camera With Excellent Features Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this camera to augment a Cannon GL-2 when shooting in the field. We edit the video in Sony Vegas Pro 8 (Vista) and Final Cut Pro (Mac) and have had no problems. The video quality is excellent and the menus are very easy to use. The "easy mode" on the camera works as advertised. The focus when zooming is good and keeps up well. Battery life is good but a longer life one would be beneficial. The hard drive is very nice and we can shoot several hours without having to worry about keeping up with tapes (handy for outdoors). The microphone and zoom feature of the mic is excellent but it will pickup wind noise outside if there is a strong breeze. There are several options that can help with this (microphone input to use a hand held or lapel mic or wireless options using either the microphone jack or the accessory adapter on the top of the camera). I would definitely buy this camera again and if you watch the prices for a while you will get a good deal.
