Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony HDR-SR12 10.2MP 120GB High Definition Hard Drive Handycam Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Customer Review: "Handy" cam describes it right.
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I wanted a high quality camcorder with plenty of storage. While it's heavier than a flash-memory cam, those other camcorders felt a little too light and flimsy to us. The handy cam feels sturdy and substantial. The hard drive is huge, it takes very high quality pictures (and has a pretty quick shutter speed even), and it's very easy to use.

The basic battery that comes with this camera lasts a pretty decent amount of time. We also bought the Sony ACCFH70 Accessory Kit w/NPFH70 Battery & LCS-VA30 Case to go with this because it included a spare battery. So far, we haven't had to use the spare battery, but it's comforting to know that it's there in case we need it. All said and done, we're fairly pleased with it. We haven't done much yet with trying to edit any videos on our computer, so can't quite comment on that at the moment. Otherwise, everything about this camcorder is to our liking.

Customer Review: Loaded with value and features!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm amazed that a tiny little camcorder like this can pack in so many features. And the quality is fantastic! I've only begun to explore the capabilities of this thing, but I'm already in love with it! And the street price is pretty darn good and getting better all the time. Don't miss out on getting hi-def video of your kids while they're still young. I used a Sony Hi8 during my daughter's early years. It did a great job, but this---well, this is at a whole new level! And you can buy inexpensive wide angle and telephoto lenses for it. I bought a 2x lens so I can get 24x optical zoom from it now. Wow!!! Should be great for all sorts of settings--nature, family, sports, whatever! And you can take 10 megapixel stills to a memory card-- on the fly-- while you're recording video to the huge 120GB built-in hard drive! What's not to like?

Customer Review: Very nice upgrade from SR11
Summary: 5 Stars

This is truly a awesome and perfect camera. Being my first camcorder it is perfect because it is easy to use. All the functions are self explanatory and there are very few buttons to confuse you. I thought taking stills by just pressing one button was pretty cool. I didn't need to switch to camera mode. I also can barely even hear the hard drive, it's as if they put 120gig onto a flash memory. They have added the USB port onto the camcorder making the docking station an option now. Which I thought was the best upgrade from the SR11. It almost seems like they took all the bad reviews they had with the SR11 and fixed them with this model (SR12). I am very satisfied with this camcorder. Sony has came through once again. In addition, you can also move hard drive data to the flash memory if you like.

Customer Review: State of the art video camera - recording to hard drive is better
Summary: 5 Stars

Recording your HD video to a hard drive, or memory stick, really is a vast improvement over recording to tape. I just made the switch, felt just like when I switched from reel to reel or cassette to CDs...being able to scan through your video clips by viewing the first frame really enhances the usefulness of viewing what you captured versus hitting forward and rewind looking for a certain spot on tape. Sony has a one button feature that moves your video from the camera to a computer, incrementally, so was easy to get a copy of what was on the camera to a second device for backup every so often.

Biggest negative for me was position of camera in your hand, I found it harder to aim this camera comfortably at subjects versus the smaller DCR-PC7 format Sony I am replacing.

Customer Review: Great Camera!!! HD Quality is great. Yipee, no tapes!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful camera. You can shoot and shoot and shoot with no tapes. Review your clips with a visual thumbnail index. Lots of options to customize settings via menus. Touch screen interface works well.

Picture quality is fabulous. As stated in other reviews, 3rd party software is still catching up with this format. The newest Adobe suite, CS4, can now ingest these files. However, it is very slow to process this format. You can use other 3rd party software to convert the files from AVCHD to avi or mpeg2 and get better results, but it is a bit of a drag. This should resolve itself over time.

Overall, though, well worth the trouble converting for the freedom of tapeless operations and HD clarity.
