I have found the Sony ICDP620 to be a great little recording device. I use it exclusively for recording interviews off the telephone for later playback and transcription and have found the recording quality very good -- comparable to a good quality cassette recorder. Benefits include LOTS of recording time (the recorder can be set for several recording speeds depending on your needs), easy to use controls, a remarkably clear speaker considering the size, and true voice reproduction. I think the only real drawback is the small size of the display and buttons, but once you become familiar with the device this should prove to be no problem. The battery life (I use rechargeables) is very good -- I use the recorder at least once a day for an hour or more -- on average I use it several times a day, and often I will use it for extended interviews, up to three hours at a time -- and replace batteries about once every 2 to 3 weeks. It takes 2 AAA batteries and if you plan to use it often I'd suggest investing in rechargeable batteries. There is an indicator on the display which shows battery life -- so there are no surprises! Directions for use are simple to follow. There are date and time indicators on the display, and probably more functions that I'm not even aware of. I took it out of the box and was using it confidently within 15 minutes. It also has a digital counter to keep track of recordings, and once you're done with a recording and want to erase it, it's very easy. Another nice feature is that you won't scrub a recording by accident because you have to push the 'erase' button twice before the recording's gone. But once it's gone, it's gone.
I think, for the money, this is a fine recording device and would recommend it highly for people who need to record notes, phone calls, and conversations in a sleek, small package. Several of Sony's higher priced models use Dragon Naturally Speaking (DNS)voice recognition. DNS has improved its program considerably and I'm curious how the Sony digital recorder works with DNS. That's my next purchase.
I have never been disappointed with a Sony product, from the first miniature black and white TV they had on the market in the early 70s to the digital camera and video recorder I use today. For my money, Sony is the way to go, and this product is no exception. A good buy and a good price.
