Customer Review: Good product bad install design
Summary: 3 Stars

This product now that it is installed is great however getting it installed was a bit of a nightmare.

Lets start on the good news:
The timer is a great feature. It is easy to set and works well
The TV is great for keeping up with a program when in the kitchen. The extra Video input allowed me to slave this to the video in the home theater good for when you need to make popcorn. The controls are easy to understand and use. Great!

Now for the bad:
The thing is just about an inch too deep. It mounted right up against the back splash and the front bolts are right at the front of the cabinet. Why? If this was just an inch shorter it would be easy to install. As it is the 90 degree plugs from radio shack are vital and even then they stick out past the back of the unit. The connections should be recessed if the unit can't be made smaller. Some other small problems. There is no battery backup for the stations and time. A little annoying.

All and all if your comfortable drilling holes in your cabnets and in my case even the back splash then this is a good product. If you don't own some tools or don't feel comfortable using them this product could be a problem.

Customer Review: Too deep for cabinet
Summary: 3 Stars

I'd had a GE unit that fit well but worked only O.K. when it stopped working I purchased this w/o checking depth. Jiggering it around and drilling through the cabinet frame, the unit still protrudes from under the cabinet and I still had to get a right angle converter AND loosen all the mounting screws and gouge the drywall to get it to fit. That's ridiculous.

Customer Review: I thought it had a DVD player too!
Summary: 3 Stars

I was in a hurry making Christmas purchases and just assumed that since this was a TV/CD player, that of course it was also a DVD player but it's not. I ended up having to return it.

Customer Review: BUYER BEWARE -- Defective Wide Screen Mode
Summary: 2 Stars

First, accept the product for what it is: a kitchen tv. Second, understand that most kitchen tv's do not offer multiple Screen Modes. Third, expect the best quality and customer service from a Sony product.

Aside from minor flaws mentioned by other reviewers, at first blush this is a fine kitchen tv. Unfortunately, based on a sample of three (my original purchase via Amazon plus two replacements by Sony), I have concluded that there is a design problem with the 7 inch monitor. In short, the picture is distorted in the Wide Screen Mode. There appears to be adjacent vertical segments (top to bottom) that are wider than normal and thinner than normal. This is most evident on all-news channels that scroll information from right to left across the bottom of the picture. In the Normal, Full and Zoom Screen Modes, the scrolling is even and consistent. In the Wide Screen Mode, the scrolling is uneven and snakelike (weaving). The distortion is present with a picture either from the tv tuner or the video input.

I have communicated with Sony via e-mail and telephone. They appear to be primarily willing to replace the tv, not to address the technical issue. I have decided to keep the tv because it does fit under the kitchen wall cabinet nicely (though snugly -- those right angle adaptors in the back are a must) and the picture is good in the other Screen Modes.

Finally, I have purchased many Sony products in my 55+ years. My current Sony items include 23 inch and 42 inch flat panel, LCD HDTV's. I have gladly paid more for the Sony quality and reliability. In other words, I'm not a Sony basher. However, I am very disappointed that Sony would sell and promote a 7 inch widescreen tv with multiple Screen Modes when the Wide Screen Mode doesn't work! And the customer service (appeasement vice solution) was not what I expected.

Customer Review: Check your kitchen cabinet dimensions
Summary: 2 Stars

I was in the market for an under cabinet TV to replace an old GE Spacemaker. I considered the Sony. But this thing is HUGE! The dimensions are: 15 3/4 H x 4 1/8 W x 12 3/4 D inches. The width dimension was a problem for my desired corner installation but I could have made it work. The depth was a more serious problem.

I believe I have typically sized American style cabinets. My kitchen was remodeled about 10 years ago. My base cabinets are 24inches deep and my upper cabinets are 12inches deep. I have a tile backsplash that reduces the depth under the cabinets by about 1/2 inch. The cabinet doors are about 1/2 inch thick. What this totals up to is the Sony sticking out 3/4 inch past the front of my cabinets. Ugh! Now if you want to add space so you can attach the cables to the rear, add another inch. Barf!

I wonder if Sony even bothered to research the dimensions of the kitchens they were trying to fit into. I would really have loved to put a Sony in my kitchen (much of my hifi equipment is Sony) but this is plain bad design.

I got an Audiovox VE640 instead. It is not the greatest but it does the job and it fits in the kitchen space allocated for it.
