Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICF-M1000 Table Top RadioCustomer Review: A nice sounding radio but too expensive Summary: 4 Stars
My guess is that this is Sony's "upgrade" to their classic table radio they have carried for years. I ended up with this radio as a gift from my ex-wife (guilt gift, parting gift who knows(rolling eyes)). It does have a nice sound and is very cool looking. However, it is more like a $100 dollar radio, not a $150 radio. I also own a Sangean WR-1. It is downstairs the Sony up. Personally, I like the Sangean better for sound. It has a tuned port and good bass. The Sony has a port in front but it does not move the air the Sangean does. The Sony however has a more balanced sound and a tone control that actually does affect the tone, it is not just for looks. It also has line in/out jacks for satellitte, MP3 etc. I like the Sangean better because I am partial to slide rule tuning. The Sony does tune in well and picks up stations very well. In my review of the Sangean, I am excited. As for the Sony, it is a very good radio but not a great one. Again overpriced. The Sangean WR-1 radio toasts the other 2 competitors (rhymes with ravioli and the Mass. capitol) brand radios as well for sound and quality IMHO. I have heard all 4. You decide. In the future, when you see the Sony ICF-M1000 selling on E-Bay for less than $100, (and you will) then it will be a fair exchange.
Customer Review: A comparable alternative to the Kloss Tivoli Summary: 4 Stars
The name "Specialty Radio" is a little weird, and sounds as though it was translated verbatim from the Japanese.
But we've been enjoying this handsome black monolith for several weeks now, both as a radio-- and as an amplified speaker for an iPod. It has a rich, slightly boomy sound-- which even at low volume is very listenable. I think Sony has done a good job in simplifying the operation of this black box. Though it could have used a little cleaner treble at the top of its range, the radio's sound reproduction is not very far below the Kloss Tivoli. Though to my ear the Kloss has a brighter mid-range. Unless you're a serious audiophile, you'll probably think this radio sounds fine.
By the way, this radio has a built in clock-- but it is NOT an alarm clock, so if that's what you were hoping for, look to another model.
Customer Review: A Treasure Summary: 4 Stars
Judging from the price drop this little piece of retro from Sony will soon disappear and that is a shame.
It's a radio. It's not an alarm clock. It doesn't make coffee or even grind the beans. It doesn't have a small screen with Wifi or Bluetooth. It doesn't buzz, tick, or chime. Sure you can plug your mp3 player into it via the headphone connection but there is no dock, no external screen, and not even a place to rest your player.
It has three beautiful knobs that turn like diamonds on glass. Tuning, Volume, and Bass/Treble. And two buttons Power, and Band or Line selector.
It is simplicity. It is elegance. It is a fine radio. Wax nostalgic or just listen to a sound richer than it has a right to be. It is pleasure recaptured.
Sometimes Sony gets it right.
Customer Review: Smoooth, great sound Summary: 4 Stars
Would have given this radio 5 stars were it better at handling line in reproduction. Plugging in my Ipod touch produced only average sound quality. But, I could not belive the sensitivity of the AM tuner. Stations were EASILY tuned in and sound quality is outstanding. The same applys to FM. Bear in mind I have yet to connect an antenna! For $59.95 at the sony style web site, you can't beat this radio. Frankly, I think the sound quality is cleaner than the Boston Acoustics Solo, which favors bass excessively and is at least as good as the Sangean WR1. It has a beautiful, clean appearance, and the clock display is very nice.
Customer Review: Simply beautiful.........but no reception Summary: 4 Stars
We bought the Sony radio to listen to a specific PBS station serving Miami to Palm Beach and we're right in th middle in Ft.Lauderdale.
Well all we picked up was static. So I attached a simple 75 ohm line antenna and still no reception. Then I bought an RCA twin arm antenna and lifted the radio as high as i could stretch the electric cord.
The result is we get perfect reception, clear as a bell all the time.GREAT!!
