Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICF-S79V Weather Band Shower RadioCustomer Review: well worth the cost Summary: 5 Stars
I've used shower radios on a daily basis for many years in several locations as we've moved around the country. Over this period, I have had several different models and and quality levels of the radios. After 3 months experience, I am far happier with this radio than any of the previous ones.
The most important criteria to me are:
Tuner capability-- The Sony by far surpasses all previous radios in this regard. We currently live in mountainous country, a good distance from a metro center, so signal strength is not the best. To pull in most stations, previous radios had to have fully charged batteries, and be positioned in exactly the right place. My selection of stations is much improved, both AM and FM. and I have much less problem with location of the unit.
Sound Quality--Again the Sony is far superior to any of my previous radios. I can understand what is coming out of the speaker without having to have the radio within 2 feet of my ear.
There are several other features that I have grown to love:
Push button tuning-- I have 3 or 4 favorites and with the buttons it is much easier to switch between them. Now that I've grown accustomed to it, I don't think I ever want go back to changing stations in the shower with the old knob & dial radios, especially with weak signals.
Digital display--- In the shower without glasses, reading the dial on previous radios was not easy. The Sony's display is large enough to see clearly, and gives you both the time and station.
Push buttons for on and off and band--- quite convenient, not having to turn the volume knob to turn on or off makes start up a "one touch" operation.
Things to consider
Size/weight---The radio is large for a shower radio and is not lite. Not a problem in my case since I have a shelf on which to place it, But I'd be concerned with trying to support it via suction cups.
Location of the buttons-- They are all on top. This could be somewhat inconvenient if you hang the radio from the showerhead.
Description of Sony ICF-S79V Weather Band Shower RadioThis is it--the shower radio you've seen and wanted! / Now just a few keystrokes away from being on its way to your home The Sony Shower Mate radio may just be the ideal early-morning companion: it only plays what you want, when you want, for as long as you want. This splash-resistant TV/Weather/AM/FM synthesized radio offers five preset buttons for programming in your favorite stations, a 90-minute timer with five timer presets (great for kitchen use), and an auto-off function. The large, raised buttons that top the unit are labeled clearly for bleary-eyed mornings, and the volume control has raised grips so that it can be manipulated when fingers are wet and slippery. The Shower Mate is oval-shaped with a flat top and bottom, and is constructed of tough, white plastic. Although it's intended to be used near water, the radio shouldn't be submerged--or even subjected to the stream of a shower. Comes with a strap for hanging and a suction cup for positioning a wire antenna. Requires three C batteries for operation.
