Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICF-S79V Weather Band Shower RadioCustomer Review: Works great, after one month Summary: 5 Stars
First, I bought this from BuyAccessories, I think because they were the cheapest overall. It arrived as the best packed item I have ever received. You know how Amazon stuff usually comes with the item on the bottom of the box and soft packing material piled on top - so no padding is on the bottom? Well, this item arrived in a box totally and evenly surrounded by foam peanuts/packing. How nice, a packing job that actually protects the item! Second, I've only had it for one month but it is great. Easy to operate. Nice hang strap. Gets all the stations I want, as long as the antenna is up in its cool little mounting suction cup. The weather band/station is not clear enough to hear, but I did not buy it for that. Every FM and AM station gives the weather every 15 minutes anyway. Overall, great reception for being inside a shower, inside a bathroom, inside a house. Oh and I LOVE the auto-off timer.
Customer Review: Endearingly clunky Summary: 5 Stars
Notice this unit was introduced two and a half years ago and still going strong which indicates to me people really like it and it holds up well. I've had mine about six months. It's got everything a radio should have and nothing it doesn't need, except maybe the digital clock. The knob on the right top is volume. The rest of the controls are push buttons on the top that include five presets for each of three bands. The buttons are under a protective rubber cover so no need to worry about humidity or splashes. It has an 18" antenna with a little suction cup at the end so you can hook it on a mirror. And it has a loop of twine on the back for carrying it around or for hanging it on a coat hook or something similar.
I find its clunkiness sort of endearing. The sound quality is all you could ask for, and the reception is excellent. So for what it is, it's probably as good as it gets.
Customer Review: a fine unit--loud and clear Summary: 5 Stars
I switched from a cheapo shower radio I got at Bed Bath & Beyond to this one. Boy what a difference. Much clearer, much louder.
Remember, you have to hear a shower radio over the shower and the bathroom fan, so it does need to be loud, especially if you listen mostly to NPR like me. I had to turn my old one all the way up, and I still couldn't hear interviews well.
One thing: the reason for the long battery life folks like here is because it takes C batteries. I used the AA rechargeables I was using in my old radio, and it works fine, fully as advertised. The battery life is satisfactory--not impressive, but OK for my purposes. But when they die, they don't fade or give warning, they just die.
It is more expensive than I really wanted to pay for this purpose, but I did get value for money. It's a fine unit, and I recommend it.
Customer Review: Top Quality Summary: 5 Stars
We have had this radio for two years. We use it in the shower. It usually doesn't get water directly on it from the showerhead... but has occasionally. It does frequently get splashed and certainly spends most of the time in a very high humidity environment. The battery life is excellent... we have yet to change the batteries! The radio reception for AM and FM is better than other larger radios that we have in the house. The volume range is good and it gets very loud for its size with minimal distortion. Overall we are very pleased with this product and would highly recommend it to someone looking for a quality shower radio... we are even thinking about getting another one to use outside the shower because I frequently "steal" it out of the shower and bring it all sorts of places such as out on the deck or to the kitchen! Great radio.
Customer Review: Not just a SHOWER radio Summary: 5 Stars
I love this little radio, and I use it all over the house. You can program it to your favorite stations. It has AM, FM (both mono and stereo stations, I believe), TV (channels 2-13, local), and weather radios. I especially like being able to get the audio to the television channels, if I am working in a room (like the kitchen) when there is something on television that I'd like to see. I only wish I could get the audio on more channels than just 2-10!I will often have the radio on in one of its functions or another for several hours in a day, and will go a couple of months at least between battery changes. I enjoyed using it when my stereo didn't bring in the radio well because of interference from the VCR with the reception. It has served me well. If you are looking for a shower radio, this is a great one to get.
