Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM Shortwave World Band Receiver with Single Side Band Reception, plus External Plug-in Antenna

Customer Review: AC adapter that works without interference . .CENSORED. . .
Summary: 5 Stars

This ia an excellent SW radio. As a matter of fact, the best for its price. The only catch is the lack of noise-free (filtered) SONY AC adapter.

The newer replacement Sony AC adapter, called the AC E60A emits interference (RFI) making it unsuitable for use with world band radios. Sony does not currently offer a satisfactory AC adapter for the Sony ICF-SW7600GR

(...) AMAZON censored this review. I suggested originally an URL to solve the problem with the adapter (Universal Radio -- check under Sony ICF-SW7600GR), AMAZON doesn't offer the right adapter but (selfishly) deleted the URL. It seems as there are new rules in AMAZON. Sorry.

ADDENDUM: Unlike the 7600G, the GR mutes for 1 sec. for EACH press of the frontal panel tuning arrows. So you can't tune by repeatedly pressing the arrows and hearing what is being received (as I usually tune the 7600G). IRRITATING to say the less.
Even worse, like the 7600G, the GR also mutes while scanning.

Customer Review: A well-built machine
Summary: 5 Stars

Having acquired several other SW radios for my collection over the last year or so, all Grundigs (G8, G6, G3, Satellit 800), the first thing I noticed about the Sony is the quality of the construction. This thing feels solid as a rock in my hands, the weight is just right, button presses are solid and not flimsy, it's just in a higher class than the Grundig radios. The sync detector on the Sony is best in class, as all the other reviews have pointed out. The reception is outstanding on all bands and the sound quality is very good as well.

I'm not sure how long ago the 7600GR debuted, but its design feels pretty dated now. The LCD display is bare bones, the switches along the side could be more user-friendly if they were front-facing buttons. What I'd love to see is a completely modern version of the legendary Sony ICF-2010, which this unit really is not meant to be, but it's as close as we'll probably ever get from Sony.

Overall, a great shortwave radio!

Customer Review: Best portable SW radio with superior 'Made in Japan' quality
Summary: 5 Stars

First introduced to the market April 2001. 10 years on and still one of, if not the best portable SW radio available in the world today.

The best feature is the overall quality, bar none. These radios are still made in Japan today unlike other inferior made in China SW radios on the market. SW performance (using the whip) I find to be very good. SSB works well and the sync' detector is an excellent feature. Design and layout is excellent though the side switches for tone and sync/SSB might be too fiddly for some. The page memory system is convienient and easy to use.

Pros:
Build quality, durable, good sound quality, great reception, analog volume control, lightweight, long battery life

Cons:
LCD display might not be to everyones tastes

I would strongly advise anyone who is considering a portable to check out the SW7600GR. For the price and size, I have not found better.

Customer Review: Sony Delivers What It Promises
Summary: 5 Stars

The ICF-SW7600 GR fulfills what it promises to be: a high-build quality portable AM/FM Shortwave radio with excellent sensitivity on all bands. Bear in mind it does not come with an AC adapter so you've got to cough up another fifteen bucks if you don't want to always replace batteries. With the adapter, the SW7600 costs well over 160 dollars, not small change for a radio that comes with a little tin speaker. For seventy dollars less and equal sensitivity and performance, you can get the Kaito 1103, which by the way comes with an AC adapter at no extra charge. In fact, the Kaito 1103 actually gets better FM. At the high price point of the Sony, I suggest you try the less expensive Kaito 1103.

Update 4-5-07: If you don't mind a slightly larger radio, you will get better sound and sensitivity with the Kaito 2100, a rebadged Redsun. And the price is about the same as the Sony.

Customer Review: classic radio has it all
Summary: 5 Stars

About as good as you can get for the money and very high quality. I got this for when I travel abroad, often to remote places, and have been very pleased with it. Back light, clock, alarm, just about anything you'd want to keep you company.

When not traveling I'm not a DXer or shortwave hobbiest, so some of its features are lost on me. However, I do listen to NPR hours a day and it makes for a great (albeit pricey) small radio- the reception is the best I've found (and I have a lot of radios!). The built in stand makes it easily rest on a table top.

While it does everything, it is darn complicated initially so read and keep the manual. Also, read one of the reviews below to get the appropriate AC power supply (www.universal-radio.com).

Wish list? Protective case (pretty standard in this class) and an aux input for mp3 playback.
