Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio (Black)Customer Review: Its about time-! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my first Sony ICF38 radio about a year ago, and then recently bought another one after finding out what a good value it was. I was disgusted when I tried to find a basic good quality simple to operate AM-FM radio with decent sound like I used to have, only to find out theyre almost impossible to find-- and the ones you do find are either needlessly expensive, over rated and overly complicated---- or absolute junk with bad sound, terrible reception and not worth the money. Ive had the high dollar rigs with a face full of delicate buttons that eventually stick, fail or cease to function, and almost every one was a big dissappointment in reception, sound and overall quality--- even some of the expensive ones. The manufacturers have spent so much time catering to the ipod/Mp3 heaphone crowd they seem to have forgotten how to build a basic decent quality sounding AM-FM portable radio with good reception that didnt cost an arm and a leg. Theres a serious gap in this segment of the market, and Sony hit the nail on the head with this little gem. It has the best sound, reception, build quality and good old fashioned simplicity of any radio in its class. The price is more than reasonable for the quality and performance delivered. The thumbwheel controls are nice and wide and easy to modulate with good linearity, and they feel like they will last a good many years. I use this radio on a daily basis and in my case the reception and sound quality are better than I expected for the price range, and after a year the radio perfoms just like the day I bought it - more than I can say for many other products out there these days. Ive seen some complain its not stereo - its not supposed to be so get over it. This is what a good basic transistor radio used to be-- and then some. To those ive seen say the reception is not good, I suggest maybe you might have gotten the odd bad unit and return it for another. Also as with any radio, there are sometimes areas where reception is more difficult, and I can only say that where Im at this radio does its job very well. The only reason I found myself looking for a radio in the first place, was to replace one that finally died after lasting over 35 years. You wont see that kind of build quality in most of todays products, but my guess is this radio from Sony could very well be one of the few welcome exceptions in todays world of throw away electronics. It may not be digital, it may not be stereo, and it may not have 144 presets - but when the power is out and nothing else works none of that will matter. Its a good simple casual portable radio that works well and wont break the bank - in short its a winner, I suggest you buy two while theyre still making them -- you wont be dissappointed.
