Customer Review: Basic Design + Good Sound = Great Radio

I've been looking for a straight forward radio for some time. I don't need and alarm clock, I don't need digital tuning, I don't need stereo, I don't need a place to dock an I-pod.
This radio is just what I needed. Talk about simple - It has two wheels (volume and tuning) and three switches (tone, on/off, am/fm). It has a nice study antenna and best of all the sound quality is very good.
It has a nice feel to it. All the switches have a nice positive "click" when you move them and the tuning/volume wheels are very smooth and solid feeling.
I use mine with the a/c power cord. The power cord is just your simple power cord like you find on your toaster or any other small appliance, not one of those big square things you find on some electronics. I bet on batteries the thing would run a very long time. I think I'll buy a second one to keep in the boat.
So if you're looking for simplicity and quality - look no further. For around $25 you can't go wrong. There is not a better option out there. (Heck, there are hardly any option out there for radios like this).

I am not one to write reviews but I feel I need to share -
I was looking for simple radio that I could keep on my window sill in a small in my mud room (for my dogs while I was out for the day) So of course I wasn't looking for a high price or high end radio & I wasn't expecting much for my money.
When this radio arrived I was immediately impressed with the design it is slim and sleek and has very expensive appearance. It's thin enough to fit nicely on a standard window sill. This radio is in a closed off box like room, I didn't get much of a reception with my other radio's so I wasn't expecting much.
When I turned it on I was again suprised- The Reception is Excellent! & the Sound is clear
This Portable radio is very & durable & Easy of use you can take it anywhere with you. This little radio is defiantly made of quality! "I LOVE IT "

JUST GOT MY ICF-38. HAD IT A FEW DAYS AND NIGHTS. VERY GOOD AM PERFORMANCE. DECENT FM. EXCEPT FOR NPR I DON'T LISTEN TO FM MUCH...
I STOOD ON THE FRONT PORCH THIS MORNING LISTENING TO A SOUTH EAST ASIAN STATION! I CAN HEAR A LOT OF OKLAHOMA LOW POWER (10KW DAY TIME) STATIONS. DALLAS/FT WORTH 50KW COULD BE HEARD AFTER SUNRISE! A LOT OF 50KW BIG CITY STATIONS LAST NIGHT.
IF YOU ARE HAVING AM RECEPTION PROBLEMS TURN OFF ALL YOUR COMPACT FLORESCENT LIGHTS AND YOUR COMPUTERS. THEY ARE MINI RADIO STATIONS. LOTS OF INTERFERENCE FROM THEM. YOUR AC POWER LINES OUTSIDE CAN BE A SOURCE OF 60 CYCLE BUZZ TOO.
VERY NICE FIT/FINISH. SMOOTH LIQUID FEELING CONTROLS. A VARIABLE CAPACITOR TUNING SETUP. NO DIGITAL ANYTHING HERE...
FOUR AA CELLS FOR POWER OR PLUG IT IN TO 120VAC. NO JACK FOR EXTERNAL 6VDC. RATS!

I bought this radio for a 92 year old friend of mine. It has been a great purchase. As people age, their dexterity tends to decline and they can be confused by modern electronics' reliance on digital interfaces. Tuning a digital radio can be hard for them, and using or setting a digital clock can be a mountain of frustration.
This radio is easy to understand, simple to use and has good sound. It is also large enough so that they can read the display and buttons. This does make it a little larger than the common offering.
If you have an older person in need of such a straightforward radio, this is a good choice. No confusing up/down buttons, am/fm/clock/radio buttons.... just straight radio.
Or if you need a simple radio yourself and don't need stereo and surround sound, etc., this is the radio for you.

I bought this radio to take to work. I work in a prison and we can bring in radio's that have no CD or cassette or MP3 player capacity. It is hard to find just a radio. But the other issue is reception. In my home I live by a very large hill on one side and a huge lake on the other (Lake Superior). Reception at home has been difficult with my boom box and my older cassette radio player. I tested this right out of the box, and without any adjustments at all, was able to get my favorite radio station from about 40 miles away in very clearly. I am not an audiophile so the sound is not a huge issue. I adjusted the sound to "low" from "high" and I think it is sounds just fine. I am going to take it into work but decided to buy a second one for my house so when I want to just listen to the radio at home I can.
