Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio (Black)

Customer Review: A Good Value
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very good small portable radio. It is NOT a Bose or a Tivoli... it is a compact little portable with good reception on AM and FM. It has very good sound and the twenty-dollar price tag makes it one of the better bargains to be had. It is not really "pocket size" as the description calls it (unless you wear a trench coat) but will slip into a briefcase or bag with no problem. I use it in the shop to listen to FM while working and am very happy with it. I live in northern Vermont where there are no local stations but I can pick up most regional AM and FM stations in Canada, Vermont, and New York with good reception. The earphone jack is mono, but you can get a small mono-to-stereo adapter plug for your stereo earphones for a couple of dollars. This radio is a bargain.

Customer Review: Great Buy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Sony ICF38 portable for use in our camper trailer located in the Great Smokey Mountains area of North Carolina. Because of the terrain, FM stations are difficult to tune but I am able to get stations in Greenville and Knoxville, TN which are relatively "loud and clear". Night time AM reception of virtually ALL clear channel broadcasters east of the Mississipi is possible; reception of some is simply fantastic. Once a station is tuned there is very little drift or fade on AM. The sound quality is pretty remakable for a small speaker. Battery consumption apppears to be very low level.

At the price of about $25, I have a "best buy" in a radio that does what I and many others claim is a superior low cost product.

Customer Review: Great little radio
Summary: 5 Stars

posted by Jay's wife, I bought this radio for my husband to listen to when he is doing handy man work around the house. He has ended up using it on a daily basis and reminds me often how happy he is with it. The reception is good and it is easy on batteries. He likes it because he can listen to his sports radio at low levels and I like it for that same reason. If you do want to plug it in there is a hidden compartment that houses the power cord so you never need to search for it or rap it around it when you're storing it. The sound is fine but not amazing though if your are looking at this kind of radio then that probably isn't your priority anyways. He has had it for over a year and a half and it still works great.

Customer Review: Very pleasantly surprised, nice radio.
Summary: 5 Stars

I wouldn't have bought this radio but the reviews sold it for me. Frankly it was so cheap I didn't think it would be all that good. My advice to you is don't be a price snob on this one. It has an excellent tuner and picks up both AM and FM stations great, plus it doesn't seem as sensitive to interference as some radios. It's relatively small but has a well-made feel to it. It also has a respectable sound for its size, and a tone switch gives you some control there. The volume is very adequate, and it seems to be easy on batteries, which are size AA. I love AA's because they're so much cheaper! Overall this is a great little radio and I would have expected to pay twice the price for what I got.

Customer Review: The Faithful ICF-38
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been a radio nut for years, and using this radio for about five months now, this review is not given casually. Probably could stock my own radio store.

If you're looking for a basic AM/FM portable radio with excellent reception, sound, portability, quality and brand, you've come to the right place. And there's even a Tone High/Low switch which gives a nice variety of sound choices.

Rather than going into the specifics of the antenna, carry handle, aesthetic appeal, speaker size and quality, functionality of the knobs, battery life, suffice it to say, for $25 you can't go wrong! Try it - you'll like it.
