Customer Review: The PERFECT Clock Radio with dual alarm!

I suffered with two inferior Emerson alarm clocks because it was close to ideal at the time. Five years and TWO broken Emerson clocks later I stumbled upon the Sony ICF-C414 in the local BJ's. Months of fruitless searching is ended by this aptly named "Dream Machine". Goodbye to Emerson's bright blue display lighting up my room like TRON Legacy. (I love that movie.)
To my amazement, the exact time was displayed an instant after plugging the unit in as the time zone was set correctly. After briefly testing only a few radio stations, the reception is great and topping the volume does not cause buzzing or distortion. The AC power cord doubles as the FM receiver antenna, while rotating the unit horozontally improves the AM reception.
The large green 1.4" display is easier to read for those bleary-eyed morning folk. The (DST) "Daylight Savings Time" feature means you can sleep easy knowing your clock auto adjusts to wake you on time. Just press and hold the DST button for 3 seconds to turn the feature on or off. Press the clock button for 2 seconds to set the date. Only the last two digits display for the year,so I had no idea what it meant until I read the manual. Press clock again to set the month and day in like manner. It is important to set the date for Daylight Saving Time to function properly. Time setting by region is much better than those "atomic clocks" which never seem to get the wireless reception you need in order to function properly.

Because of my bedroom setup my clock sits in front of the TV, where it needs to sit below the bezel. My old Epson clock radio's bright blue numbers is a distraction that is hard to ignore when watching TV. Sony's black bezel blends in perfectly, and the dimmer makes TV viewing less of a distraction. The gentle "beep beep" alarm will rouse most sleepers while deep slumber will require the melody setting or radio with the volume turned up. Neither the melody or beeper volume is adjustable.
Minor quips.
The 3V CR2032 button cell battery backup prevents lost clock and alarm settings. I would prefer a 9V, AA's or AAA's as they are common and easy to replace. Both alarms don't have the melody setting, Although the face is elegent, it can slightly block my TV view. It could stand to be a little smaller overall. The large green numbers are better than "old blue", but a traditional red would have been nice. Perhaps a switch to change LED colors. I'm happier just to sleep without that blue "night light" any more. The alarm reset button could stand to be raised and colored differently for easier resetting in the morning.
While not "perfect" in the personal sense of what I desire from an alarm clock, this Sony "Dream Machine" is ideal in terms of functionality. If some of the other reviewers had suffered with my two Emersons, perhaps they would hold the Sony ICF-C414 in higher regard. I wish I had found it sooner - it's perfect!
