Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICFS79W AM/FM/Weather Band Digital Tuner Shower Radio (White)Customer Review: Loud & Clear Summary: 5 Stars
I've used the Sony ICFS79W for about a month, and been VERY happy. It receives clear AM signal so I've always got my Jim Rome Show, and the FM is great for other family members. The speaker is LOUD. No power problems here.
Be aware that there is a little rope for hanging the radio over the showerhead pipe. I don't use it because I don't want the radio to get too wet. There's also a tiny suction cup, but it's designed to attach the thread-like antenna wire to the wall, NOT to hang this heavy radio. By the way, I don't use the thread-like antenna wire at all, and reception is perfect in an environment that's exhibited sketchy reception with all other radios.
This radio has a big, wide base, so I rest it on my shower door or toilet tank. After each use, I take it out of the bathroom and let the condensation evaporate. I'm hoping to pamper this radio so it lasts a long time.
I'm glad I didn't pay extra money for the Sony radio that also receives TV audio, because the change to digital TV has rendered that analog feature completely useless.
I'd highly recommend this radio to anyone looking for powerful shower audio.
Customer Review: Love This Radio - Best Available Summary: 5 Stars
I have had this radio for years (actually my model is exactly the same as this one except it has analog TV bands that are now obsolete) The large front facing speaker provides great sound unlike the tinny, hollow sounds of others. The countdown timer is great to auto-shut off so I can finish listening while at the sink and leave the room knowing it will shut off shortly. It is also handy when time is short to get you moving along - when it shuts off, time is up. Trying to consolidate, I went looking for a new one with a mirror. Looked at several, purchased a few, could not find a combo shower radio/mirror that had acceptable sound quality compared to this Sony. I'll keep this and be content with a mirror hanging underneath it!
Pros:
Sound Quality
Battery Life- Takes big "C" cells but they last forever
Suction and/or cord attachment to wall or shower head
Accurate Clock
Direct Access -1 button touch for up to 5 FM and 5 AM stations
Countdown Timer - 5 minute increments
Cons:
Countdown timer does not have display after setting the time so you don't know how much time is left
Customer Review: The Real Deal in the shower Summary: 5 Stars
Honestly, I got on here to see if there were any newer shower radio's than this 7 year old Sony that I own. Yes, you read correctly, I have had this unit forever. It simply won't die. It works great but I am a gadget guy and was seeing if there was some new shower sound technology out there. After looking through what is out there, I'll stick with this unit. I always just have it sitting on my towel rack. It sounds great and is super durable. It takes "C" batteries and I only have to change them every couple of years. I have knocked it off the rack several times over the years and when it hits the tile floor, the battery cover, batteries and the volume dial go blasting off in different directions. When that happens I always say some expletive and think "well, that's the end of that radio". But I stick the batteries back in, put the cover on and press the volume knob on and it fires right back up. It literally won't die. I highly recommend this unit. I think I bought this unit for $60.00 at Walmart and it was part of the Sony "LIV" series of products. If you want something that will last you a very long time, get this shower radio!
Customer Review: Best Shower Radio Ever. Summary: 5 Stars
*UPDATE*
Just wanted to write an update to state that 2 years after purchasing the SONY ICFS79W shower radio it is still excellent even after being used every single day. The batteries last a surprisingly long time. I may have changed them once or twice in the 2 years that we have owned this radio. Also, this radio has the BEST reception of any radio or stereo in my entire home.
*ORIGINAL*
I ordered this shower radio for my husband as a Christmas present in 2008. It works great. This shower radio has best reception. The antenna has a little suction cup at the end which does it's job very well. I made the decision to buy this shower radio after reading about a dozen reviews for different models. This one had the best feedback for reception which is one of the most important considerations for a shower radio. Especially if you don't have a window in your shower like me! I'm so thankful for Amazon customer reviews! Yes, I would recommend the "Sony ICFS79W AM/FM/Weather Band Digital Tuner Shower Radio". You'll get a lot of use out of it. This makes a great gift gift!
Customer Review: Meets every expectation Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned one of these radios for over a year now, and it has performed really well. This isn't a high-fidelity piece of audio equipment--it isn't even stereo--but if you want to listen to the news while you're getting ready in the morning then it fits the bill perfectly.
I keep the radio up on a little windowsill above my tub. It gets splashed a little, receives lots of steam exposure, and gets fondled with wet hands every day. So far it has put up with this treatment very well. You wouldn't want to submerge it, put it on the floor of your shower, or expose it to steady streams--it's not like every seam is sealed on this thing. I think its innards are just reasonably tolerant to moisture... but if you abuse it with enough direct water then I'm sure it'll eventually corrode or break.
Reception is good with a very handy digital presets, and battery life is great (over 100 hours on 3 Duracells). It doubles as our emergency radio whenever the power goes out. All in all it's a great portable radio.
