Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICFS79W AM/FM/Weather Band Digital Tuner Shower Radio (White)Customer Review: Exactly What We Were Looking For Summary: 5 Stars
Our inexpensive bathroom radio finally gave out after 10 years so it was time for a new one. I quickly discovered that simple radios aren't very common in stores these days, even at Best Buy. I found a radio for $20 at Walmart. It was almost useless because it did not pull in very many stations. So I shopped on Amazon and found this Sony, and, according to the description, it meets our needs to a tee. I was a little hesitant to buy a Sony product sight unseen. We have two Sony products in our house: A small transistor radio for the kitchen (excellent), and a compact stereo for my workshop (junk). Luckily, the Sony shower radio is like our kitchen radio. It's extremely well designed and functions beautifully. The reception is excellent and the sound is very good for a small unit. I can't conceive of a single improvement for what we need this radio to do.
Customer Review: Pleased with this radio Summary: 5 Stars
This product exceeded my expectations. In the past I have bought some other shower radios that did not work well and was also expecting this one to have poor quality, but I have been pleasantly surprised. We have not used it in the shower, but instead have it sitting on the counter. I love the timer feature because I no longer need to remember to turn off the radio before I leave for work. When my teenage daughter takes a shower, we have her put the timer on 10 minutes to help decrease the incredibly long showers she likes to take. So far it has gotten good reception, but we do need to use the antenna. I also appreciate the digital station programming so I can switch from my daughter's radio stations to the one I like better to a quick push of the button. I tried the weather button the first day I owned it, but have not used it again.
Customer Review: Love this radio! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using this radio pretty regularly for a little over a year and just put in new batteries for the first time, which is what prompted me to post this review. I'm an NPR addict and this little radio goes with me in the shower, out to greenhouse, into the bedroom, to an outdoor home improvement project site - anywhere out of reach of my plugged-in radios. Even my skeptical husband is pretty impressed. I give it high marks for strong and clear sound quality, durability and portability. If I have any 'issues' with it at all it would be the dangling antennae as I move the radio around. I don't need to use the antennae very often, but its suction cup doesn't adhere to the radio well. I've settled on wrapping it around the radio base and securing it with a wide rubber band. Now back to All Things Considered!
Customer Review: Not quite as good as the first one. Summary: 5 Stars
I got my first one of these about six years ago. If you read the good reviews about this radio and its battery life, it's all true. The plastic top that covers the "Off" button finally cracked after daily use in our shower in the master bathroom. That radio was moved to the garage when we got the new one.
So what's the difference between the two? Sony removed the TV band. Not a big deal, it was analog. With the two units side by side- The new unit does not have as good of FM reception. Fringe stations have more static and it is more prone to interference from people standing nearby. The sound is slighty thinner (less bass). I did give the radio about 10 hours of break-in and the sound was still the same.
Bottom line; This is still the best shower radio I have come across.
Customer Review: Sweet! Summary: 5 Stars
I'd purchased a different brand radio for my bathroom and had to send it back -the sound and reception were just bad, even with the little wire antenna strung everywhere. This one receives perfectly with the antenna wire still wound up in the case unused and the sound is perfect for voice/news.
I originally didn't realize this has no plug! It's batteries only, which makes perfect sense (duh) for a bathroom, esp if you want to carry it into the shower occasionally. I've had it for six months, use it several times a day, and no fade on the batteries yet.
Great design, too, with all the buttons except volume right on the top.
Thank you, Sony! Another brilliantly designed product that perfectly fits its niche.
