Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-E828LP Fontopia Earbuds with Winding Case

Customer Review: Cheap, Good, and Rugged
Summary: 5 Stars

Bottom line: these headphones will last you a while, cost less than a CD, and sound great.

I had a pair that I used for 6 years. I was not nice to them. I crumpled them up and stuffed them into bags and pockets, accidentally sat on them or dropped things on them, had them yanked out of my ears when I tripped or dropped my MP3 player, and basically beat them into the ground. The connection never weakened, and I never had any problem with broken wiring (and that's happened to me with much more expensive headphones than these). Finally, one of the buds shattered. They still work, mind you, but the plastic cracked in several places and the speaker came loose from the housing.

I had them for 6 years, and I got them SECOND HAND from a friend who doesn't exactly take good care of his things.

I'm going to buy a new pair soon.

Oh, and I actually like the non-circular shape. The perfectly symmetrical ones (like the Apple earbuds) are too small for my ears and don't feel snug enough. I've worn these for hours on end, and they might pinch a little after a day of using them, but it's nothing that doesn't go away in a few minutes.

Best $8 you can spend on headphones.

I read several reviews of these headphones here at Amazon about a month ago and decided that I give them a chance when my current headphones broke. My sub-par Koss clip-ons died on me last Friday after 4-months and the standard pair that came with my Rio Cali had broken weeks after purchase, so I decided to purchase a pair.

I bought them at my local Sears for $10 rather than order them from Amazon because I needed them ASAP. These headphones more than exceed my expectations. My previous experiences with bud-style headphones have been pretty bad. These however, had excellent sound quality, above-average bass, and fit into my ears quite nicely. I don't have any problem with the length of the cord and I tend to keep my MP3 player clipped to my waist while I listen to it.

The winding case is very easy to use and is a nice edition as it prevents my headphones from getting tangled in my backpack or purse when not in use. Also included are removable pads that fit over the tips of the headphones themselves for a better fit.

All in all, I'd recommend these headphones even if you're not normally a fan of bud-style headphones. Their excellent sound quality and low price are sure to please.

I am currently on my 5th...yes, 5th pair of Sony MDR-E828LP earbuds. I keep a pair next to my computer, with my MP3 player, portable CD player, etc. They are so cheap it didn't matter! I have used several pairs of earbuds over the last 10-years or so. Everything from Sennheiser to Philips to Sony. I have found these 828's to provide the best bang for the buck. The sound quality is really good considering these earbuds cost around 5 bucks! While you can find better sounding earbuds for a lot more money it just was not worth it to me. In fact, I would say the sound difference would only be profound to a true audiophile.

The bass is tight and immersive, the highs are clean without being overpowering, and the mid-range is clean...what else do you want out of a pair of earbuds? Another great quality about the 828's is their very light weight. I like to use my MP3 player while being active and these are hardly noticeable to me. Other earbuds I have used tend to feel heavy over time.

I would recommend these cheap earbuds to anybody looking for a replacement set for the junk sets that come with most MP3 players. Heck, you can even buy these the next time you are at Walmart!

These earphones are the best I ever had. I never had to try other pairs of earphone because I absolutely loved these that I keep buying it! After 6 years I buy the same one everytime. Of course I never use the winding case and it just sits there but heck it usually stores my other earphones that I brought but can't seem to throw them out because it costed money. It seems that many people are complaining about the electrical shocks from the earphones and I can answer why thats happening. It's actually static electricity. I experienced it myself a couple of times because I was wearing a wool sweater and the wool peacoat jacket that caused static electricity to form. It's actually not the earphones fault but when your wearing lots of clothes or a scarf with the earphones I suggest you switch to headphones to prevent being shocked. The bass is pretty decent when comparied to panasonic or jvc earphones. Hey for 10 bucks or less you can't except Sony to go all out and improve their cheapest model. I abuse my earphones so for 10 bucks a year I think these are the best rather than buying something thats $100 dollars or over and later regret it because it got either lost, broken or stolen.

Customer Review: Sennheiser MX400 vs. Sony MDR-E828LP
Summary: 5 Stars

Comfort: The Sennheiser MX400 earbuds are perfectly circular in shape thus seemingly fitting better inside your ear. While the Sony MDR-E828 are also circular but slightly tapered which initially fits inside your ear, but after extensive listening they cause your ear to ache due to the tapered edge. Thus the Sennheiser MX400 wins in comfort for long-term listening.

Sound Quality: The Sennheiser MX400 has a neutral refined sound with fair bass response and smooth treble. The Sony MDR-E828 has a brighter sound with slightly higher bass output and high treble. Generally fans of rock, dance and rap music will prefer the Sony MDR-E828. The Sennheiser MX400 can handle those genres, but not sound as "pumped up" with the Sony MDR-E828. Sound quality is a matter of personal choice, so you decide who wins.

Features: Both offer the same features: same cord length and winding cases.

Overall this is a tough decision, but if I had to declare a winner I would say the Sony MDR-E828 wins as it is almost $5 cheaper than the Sennheiser MX400.
