I had taken to watching television or movies to keep myself entertained while riding my stationary recumbent bike at home. As the fans I use to keep myself cool are anything but quiet, I had gotten into the habit of turning my television's volume higher than desirable for a girlfriend who works nights and sleeps during the day. Hence, I needed wireless headphones that delivered moderate quality and had a rechargeable battery that allowed for a connection to my existing equipment. I found this to be the case with the Sony MDR-IF240RK wireless headphone system.
The quality of sound is much above your standard Walkman or MP3 player: it delivers a genuine sounding stereo experience. While granted, you can occasionally hear a buzzing sound if the headphone's volume is elevated, this can be alliviated by turning up the volume at the source and lowering the headphone's volume slightly. Sound quality is consistent within the range specified in the manual. The transmitter appears to work on infared with line-of-site: once you go around corners, behind large objects, or behind the direction that the transmitter is facing, you lose sound. But it comes back instaneously once you return to line-of-sight.
Included in the package is a Y-cable that runs from the source of the audio by means of a ministereo (think Walkman headphone connection)-to-RCA connection into the transmitter. It also includes a mini-to-standard stereo converter plug. If you're like me and have dual-RCA outputs (red and white plugs), you can simply purchase an RCA-to-ministereo Y-cable. This can be purchased inexpensively at any electronics store, or on Amazon when you purchase these headphones. There is a connection on the transmitter for both types of connection, and I use the later.
The rechargeable battery was a big selling point to me. While one can use a standard AAA battery for several hours of enjoyment, the transmitter also acts as a charging station for a proprietary battery included in your purchase. This, in the long run, can save you a substantial amount of money on batteries.
In short, I've been pleased with this purchase and highly suggest it. I find myself preferring these headphones to standard television set speakers, especially when I don't want to interrupt my girlfriend or in circumstances where there is a lot of softly spoken dialog and no subtitles.

Go Infrared
Infrared transmission works by sending out infrared light signals from the transmitter to the headphones. Infrared signals are resistant to external noise and interference, but the headphones must be within line of sight of the transmitter--the signal can't pass through walls, furniture, or other obstacles.
That said, these phones offer a 24-foot transmission range, for listening enjoyment throughout the room, and a 90° transmission angle (maximum) for uninterrupted listening as you move around.
A convenient mute function lets you temporarily suspend audio, and the simple controls include an automatic power switch and single volume control.

Powerful Sound
30 mm diameter drive units deliver serious bass, and a wide dynamic range. PET diaphragms ensure high rigidity, which minimizes distortion, even at higher volume levels. Ferrite magnets combine high energy and small size, for ample sound output without weighing the headphones down.
Great Battery Life
The included NiCad rechargeable battery automatically recharges when you place the headphones on the supplied transmitter. Get up to 30 hours of life on a single charge, or switch to an optional AA alkaline battery for 100 hours.
