Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-IF240RK Wireless Headphone System

Customer Review: Great Headset
Summary: 5 Stars

They do a great job. I got them to watch TV at night without disturbing others. The sound is great, no distortion by turning up the TV volume and lowering the one in the headset. Charge last a long time, charged them once over a week ago and still sounding great. I like that I can use any AAA battery when it runs down on charge, so I don't need for it to charge to use it, but if I place it in the charger/base once a week it keeps the charge, no problem with that at all.
On and off button on headset is a big plus, no need to get up to place on base after each use.
The sound quality is great and clear, even when watching TV and using my Wireless laptop, they don't interfere with each other. They are comfortable, not tight so that could be a problem for some people but I like them like that. If you want to walk around the house or go out in the yard while listening to music, these are not for you, these are for getting clear, great sound in the same room without interference. Once you walk out the door and have a wall in between you and the base you will loose the sound.
Get these if you just want to watch TV or listen to music while in the same room as your equipment. I loose the signal at 20 feet away.

Customer Review: Ideal for students
Summary: 5 Stars

I received these around June 15, 2004, and on November 28, 2004, the battery finally ran out. I use these every day and every night to go to sleep by, and am not even always conscientious about turning them off or putting them in the charger, so I have found the lifespan of the included battery to be wonderful. If you live in any kind of shared room, as in a dorm or barracks, these are perfect. Mine are hooked up to my computer and I can watch movies, listen to music, and hear anything on the internet without my roommate having to hear what I'm listening to. Sound quality is perfectly acceptable for most normal people, and the limited range isn't an issue in a dormroom setting. I love these.
(Update 22 March 2005-- I'm still using the original batteries. I have to make sure to put the 'phones in the charger more often, and have noticed a little deterioration in range and quality, but I'm sure these issues would be easily corrected by putting in fresh batteries. I go to sleep with them on my head every night and I wear them almost continuously when I'm at home. As I said before, ideal for students, long life, reliable, and a great buy.)

Customer Review: Multiple headsets can be used with single transmitter
Summary: 5 Stars

(NOTE: Even though the model states MDR-IF240RK, it is actually an MDR-IF240R. I don't think there's a difference!)

We have a home theater system that can be too loud to watch at night. A pair of these headsets (that's two of them) allows both my wife and I to watch TV while the baby sleeps. It doesn't require two transmitters as it gets its signal from a single one. Highly convenient!

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is infrared technology, so it is line-of-sight. Nothing can block an imaginery line connecting the transmitter to the headset and you, otherwise... no sound! This works flawlessly at 25 feet. Haven't tested it further.

The sound quality is adequate for watching TV. It's definitely not up to the challenge of CD-quality music, but I doubt people who cared about that would be looking at infrared technology.

Other nice things. The batteries last a long time. Generally, an hour of TV a day lasts over a week on a single charge. But, if the batteries do go dead, they can easily be swapped for some AAA. Very convenient.

DEFINITE A+++.

Customer Review: Great product for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought these headphones for my wife after reading the reviews on Amazon. Seems the radio frequency headphones have more problems and poorer quality than these infrared ones. Also, I have a lot of wireless stuff that I didn't want to interfere with.

These headphones are not super secure when sitting on your head, but unless you're running on a treadmill, it shouldn't be a problem. The sound does not cut out even if you turn sideways or backwards. The sound will cut out if you lose line of sight.

I'm no audiophile, but the sound quality is definitely sufficient for watching TV/movies or listening to music. There was no issue with hissing/popping while listening through my Onkyo receiver. The other thing that's especially nice is that you can adjust the volume from the headset so two people with headsets can listen at the volumes they're comfortable with.

For the current price of $39.99, it's definitely worth the money. I just purchased another set for myself, so my wife and I can watch movies together after the baby has gone to bed.

Customer Review: Sounds great so far
Summary: 5 Stars

So I got them today and my bf and I set them up, which was a pretty simple setup. There was an option to read the directions before purchasing, so I checked them out before I bought them and it looked simple. We set them up, the only thing we didn't know was to go under options on the TV and set it to audio instead of speakers. After that, they sound great. If you put the volume up too high on the headphones you get that static, speaker sound. It's like when you have speakers set to high and no music playing, it sounds like that. So I just adjusted them to the right level on the headphones and turned up the volume on the TV. Sounds great so far. I guess I'll update it as time passes. I saw some reviews that after a few months they stopped working, I'm hoping that doesn't happen. There is a 90 day warranty on it, my luck it'll happen after that, lol. Right now I'm using a AAA battery because I didn't want to wait for them to charge, but I'll swap the battery later and charge it. If there is a change in quality, I'll update. Overall I really like these and I am glad I got them.
