Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-NC6 Noise Canceling HeadphonesCustomer Review: A step above conventional headphones Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first pair of noise-canceling headphones, and I chose this model because I've always liked Sony headphones, and the price was great. I am currently deployed in Baghdad, Iraq, and there is a LOT of ambient noise which forced me to crank up the volume on my Logitech headphones. The drone of helicopters, armored vehicles, Humvees, diesel generators, and even the air conditioner, prompted a solution. I was amazed - the moment you turn them on, there is a brief pause as the unit counters the background noise, which the listener hears as a quick "deadening" of one's surroundings. It is similar to walking into a soundproofed room. The volume is automatically reduced accordingly, and as a result, the clarity of what you are listening to is increased dramatically. I use this with my XBOX 360, and the audio coming from games, movies, and music is much more dynamic. Conventional headphones cannot compare - once you try these, you'll surely be impressed. This is a good product for first-timers, or for the non-audiophile who can do without the frills of more expensive units.
One note: noise-canceling headphones DO NOT cancel the entire range of frequencies, or perform this to 100%. It functions around 80-90%. I am still able to hear conversations and most high-pitched sounds, though notably diminished. View the frequency-range for the noise-canceling function before purchasing. Your needs may differ from mine.
Customer Review: Outstanding headphones, period Summary: 5 Stars
I originally purchased the Sony MDR-NC6 headphones as a second set for a portable DVD player, which I planned to operate in the car or during air travel.
Although I had never used noise-cancelling headphones before, I was quite familiar with the challenges associated with attempting to listen to audio in those environments.
Today, after having owned and operated these headphones for more than two months, I continue to be amazed at the overall audio quality they deliver. They are my favorite headphones, period, even without the noise-cacellation feature enabled. I even use them with my home audio system, TV, game console -- you name it.
Not only are these headphones versatile, they are comfortable to wear, fold up flat inside of a quality pouch, and fit easily into a backback -- or briefcase.
I ultimately decided on these headphones because of the Sony brand, the low price in relation to retail, and the other great reviews they received in comparison with others in their class.
Be sure to check out the other new & used purchase options for these headphones on Amazon. I only paid $25 for mine because they didn't have the instruction manual (which I downloaded as a PDF from the Sony website) or original packaging. I can confidently say, however, that the Sony MDR-NC6 headphones are definitely worth the Amazon selling price of around $40.
Customer Review: Sony MDR-NC6 - Excellent value, well designed. Summary: 5 Stars
This headphone meets the need for noise reduction at a modest cost. I bought a cheaper brand earlier but it broke after 2 uses. The Sony is very well built, works well as a plain headphone or as a noise cancelling one. You can switch the noise cancelling feature on or off. The noise cancelling circuitry is built into the earpiece, thus there is no separate piece with a microphone to pick up the noise. There are other brands of headphones that have slightly better specs, but cost 10 times more. I have used it at work, and tested it under a noisy bathroom fan, you can really tell the difference when the noise cancelling feature is on or off. I have used regular headphones to drown out noise at work, these noise cancelling ones allow you to reduce the noise and listen to audio at a lower volume, thus reducing the potential damage to your hearing. These headphones are lighter and smaller than the full size headphones, but sound as good (compared to Sony MDR-XD200). I have not had a chance to try them on a flight, so keep this mind. The only drawback I see is that you cannot disconnect the cable from the earpiece, which would be handy to do if you only want to use it for noise reduction, and not connect it so a music player. Even with that, I still give it a 5-star rating, great value!
Customer Review: Real Nice and battery OK Summary: 5 Stars
What shied me away from these initially was the reviews about the location of the battery. However, it is NOT a problem whatsoever. It's an AAA and although it may look to be in an odd spot, it's light enough and/or counter balanced in a way that I never feel it, much less know it's even there when on.
The phones themselves sound real good, probably not state of the art, but a bit better than the cheapies that come with portable CD players.
The NC also is pretty good. I don't know if there are any that are perfect, it probably depends upon what you are trying to cancel out. But for ambiance, office noises, etc. there is an improvement wearing these nc's.
This is my second pair of nc headphones as I returned the first over the ear type I had due to pain. These Sonys are quite comfortable. Just slightly heavier than the inexpensive non-nc lightweights, but the sound improvement and nc is a fair trade off.
As stated in my review for my other pair, when it comes to headphones, it's a very individual preference, much like music itself. From my perspective, these are comfortable, sound good, cancels noise pretty decently and for a very reasonable price as well as a brand name. Sounds like a good deal to me!
Customer Review: These are amazing...great buy! Summary: 5 Stars
I've only had these headphones for about 2 months now, but they're incredible! I use them at work. The sound is great, and at work I can really hear the difference in the 'noise cancelling'. I work in an office building and white noise is pumped in through the speakers to drown out noise - basically so that you can't hear someone talking 2 or 3 rows over. When I put the headphones on and click on the 'noise cancelling' I can hear the white noise fade away to nothing. Many people have tried them on and are astounded (not just at the headphones, but it really lets them know how loud the white noise in the building is - think that's bad for our ears??). They are extremely comfortable headphones, as well. I can have them on for hours with no pain - and this is the first set of headphones I've ever been able to say that about. I have really only one complaint about them, and that's the placement of the wire that connects the two sides - it's easily visible in the cross-bar construction, so I'm worried about damage to it, or it popping out. If I keep putting them in the carrying case, though, there should be nothing to worry about.
