Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-NC6 Noise Canceling HeadphonesCustomer Review: great headset, especially for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using this headset for more than year now. I am no audiophile, but I am particular about the quality of sound I hear. This was first set of noise cancelling headset I bought. I had a tried a few others at the range before buying this. After many trips, some of which are longest possible international ones, I can tell you this is one great headset to have. Noise cancellation work quite well. You definitely wont feel like you are alone in a room (which I hear Bose will make you feel, but Bose makes you pay 10 times more as well), but it suppresses enough of jet engine noise that you wont think about it. The lower and mid range frequencies sound very well (most Sony's do), and highs are decent. It uses a AAA battery (good - I dont have to worry about charging it before I take it somewhere), and it is conveniently hidden above one of the ears (unlike Maxell and a few others I have seen, where it is a separate attachment on the wire). The battery stays for a long long time. The headset works without battery, and is a more than decent headset even then. For this price, just go for it.
Customer Review: GREAT for Hi-MD Walkman users!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought these headphones at Magnolia Audio/Video a few months ago, to go along with my MZ-NH700 Hi-MD Walkman and RM-MC38EL remote (all three are in silver) and I wanted to upgrade to a pair of MDR-NC50 headphones, and to be honest with you, I like these NC6 headphones better. I checked the specs on both, and while the set of 6s have a little less noise canceling power than the 50s (10dB as opposed to 14dB) and a lesser frequency response (30Hz-15KHz as opposed to the 50s 18Hz-22KHz), they have a much louder output (106dB compared to 102dB, not to mention a much more present audio which allows you to cut the volume level of your unit by 20%), as well as their convenient foldable, flat design that takes up less space in my gear bag. The only complaint I had about them was the non-detachable 1.5m long cord, it being too long for use with remote controlled units, but since I have soldering iron using experience, I forged a custom 0.5m cord for my headphones and used it along with my RM-MC38EL remote, and now I have the PERFECT setup for my Hi-MD Walkman system. Well recommended and well worth the price!!!
Customer Review: Very good for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I went shopping for a pair of noise-canceling headphones after discovering that iPod earbuds are useless in the growling, hissing din of a city bus. While the MDR-NC6 will not totally eliminate noise, it did cancel most of the low-frequency ambient sound so that I could enjoy my iPod on the bus. Even subtle sounds such as acoustic guitar rhythm parts are discernable and distinct.
They should perform even better on a plane, where most of the ambient sound is low frequency (air conditioning & jet engines). ... I tested them by crouching next to my clothes dryer - sure enough, the headphones canceled virtually all of the dryer sound. All I could hear was the faint tick-tick of jeans rivets hitting the dryer drum.
Although I'm sure closed ear cups would be more comfortable, I find the MDR-NC6's on-ear design to be comfortable enough for moderately long stretches.
If I hit the lottery I may buy the Bose 'phones. Until then, these Sonys are one-tenth the price and perform remarkably well.
Customer Review: Great price and quality Summary: 5 Stars
You will not find better noise cancelling headphones at this price. The headphones have been great from the first use. The headphones require 1 AAA battery (not included). There is a switch for the noise cancelling. I imagine the other reviewer did not have the noise cancelling turned on when listening the first time. When switched on and no music playing, you hear the white noise it generates. When the music starts, the noise cancelling amplifies the low frequencies (bass, etc) and with the white noise, you cannot really hear anything going on around you. You can hear outside noises when the music is quieter or there is a pause, but the noise outside is still reduced. For the price, you should not expect complete silence at all times. The headphones are great for commuters. It greatly reduces the sounds while riding the train or bus. I cannot hear people talking, kids, or the sounds of the train or bus. For the price of the BOSE, you could get these SONY headphones and a DELL 20 GB mp3 player...
Customer Review: Reduced Noise Nirvana!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've tried the more expensive noise reduction headphones, but these Sony's do the job extremely well, for 1/3 the cost. These were a gift, from my wife, after a trip to vegas where I had to wear a set of in-ear phones with a pair of over the ear phones on top just to hear my DVD sound. Two sets for one person...too much! And I have good hearing. When I got these I was excited to try them out and from the very moment the noise cancelling technology kicked in I knew they were the one's for me. I actually had to turn the volume down on the DVD player, they're that good.
They're very comfortable on the head and ears, even after the dvd ended I kept them on to take a nap (5 hour flight to San Francisco). I've never slept so peacefully on an airplane.
I've always been a fan of Sony products, my home TV, stereo, DVD/VCR have always been Sony, they last longer and I get better quality out of their products, and these headphones carry on the fine tradition of excellence from Sony.
