These headphones perform very well, and don't cost an arm and a leg. They are effective in canceling medium-pitch to low-pitch noises while allowing for conversations. So for example, on a plane, you can hear the announcements and the flight attendants without removing the phones, which is a real plus.
I did not find that they were uncomfortable, even worn for five hours at a single stretch.
The overall frequency response for music was outstanding; I found their bass compliance to be excelent. For the money, they are hard to beat.

These headphones are comfortable but I have not used them for extended time yet.The sound quality is great but everything I've had from Sony is better than most and this price was excellent for the refurbished unit. I saw places selling new ones over $100. They look brand new. The noise reduction,(nothing cancels all noise)is better than my previous ones. The real test is when I get on a diesel tractor this summer. They fold flat but the other models folded once more at the top of the headband making them even more compact. I'm not a headphones expert, but I was very pleased with these. I am actually able to sleep on airplanes now, where I couldn't before. Don't expect all noise to be blocked, that's not what they're designed to do (same with most "noise canceling" headphones). But it will lessen it quite a bit and my music comes across crystal clear. I can't imagine spending $300 on Bose when I can get these for $40 and be just as satisfied. I AM very much into music and I'm particular about quality of sound and I'd recommend these to the most persnickety music listener.Customer Review: Exellent Value

I've noticed that most of the negative reviews seem to stem from unrealistic expectations... Depending on where you buy these, we're looking at somewhere between $35-50. When compared to the other noise-reduction headphones in this price range, they are FAR superior.
I bought mine from Best Buy and was actually looking at more expensive options in the $75-100 range and the customer service rep steered me towards these and I couldn't be happier. I can put them on at work and drift away from the office noise.

I travel a lot and hate the constant buzz on an airplane, either from the plane or the other passengers. This headphone set is my first noise-canceling type and I am very pleased with its performance on a plane. When switching the noise canceling feature on and off, it is very apparent of the background noise that is eliminated. I actually need to turn the unit OFF to speak to the flight attendants when they come down the aisle.
The headphones could be more comfortable though. I would give these a 3.5-star if based on comfort alone.
