I tried several noise canceling headphones (including other SONY models) before settling on these. The noise cancellation is one of the best I've experienced. They also have good electrical sensitivity which means you will get pretty good sound volume from most MP3 player outputs (this was not the case with several other models I tried). I only wish the headphone design enclosed your ear completely for better sound isolation but, for this money, I think I'm asking too much.... I bought the headphones to use on summer vacation for my daughter and I. While using the headphones in the airport and riding on the airplane, the headphones noise canceling function worked great. It basically cancels out the lower sounds (ie. airplane engines), so you can hear either your ipod or dvd player. Our flight was about 2 1/2 hours long, and the headphones were comfortable enough to wear without hurting our ears. I am sure there are better headphones, but for the price, these work terrific!Customer Review: great phones for the money

I bought these headphones to listen to my Creative Vision M which I use in the New York City Subways. The noise canceling works mainly to eliminate low frequencies and works well with subway rumble. In addition when the noise canceling is turned on, the volume is amplified and that is great considering the noise in the subway that is not cancelled. For $35 you can't beat these very high quality headphones with excellent battery life.
If you really want noise cancelation, pay over $300 for Bose :)

Great deal for the price. I paid $31.99 including the shipping. These work nicely and act as passive headphones also. I've tried similar and much more expensive headphones and found very little noticeable difference for my applications. (Including the Bose noise cancelling headphones which are not passive) These Sony MDR-NC6 Noise Canceling Headphones are a great purchase but don't take my word for it. Get a pair for yourself. I'm going to get a second pair for home since I use the first pair for work.Customer Review: Bang for the buck

Not the most comfortable set to wear - after several hours, my right ear hurts from the pressure
