Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-RF4000K HeadphoneCustomer Review: Another Thumbs Up Summary: 5 Stars
Many of my purchases are based on Amazon reviews and star ratings. In the case of wireless headphones however, the choice was not easy! People either love or hate their units. To make matters worse, the same complaints of static noise, loose headbands, range, poor quality, etc., seemed to plague all brands and models.
Head size, ear shape, hearing ability, and sound judgments vary greatly from person to person, so OVERALL STAR RATINGS ARE OF LITTLE HELP. However, comments about various features were valuable. I noted that 900 MHZ units drew far more complaints than the more expensive 2.4GHZ models. So my search began for a 2.4GHZ unit.
One model caught my eye. The Sony MDR-RF-4000K only costs $26-$46 more than Sennheiser 120 or Sony 970 units, but offers 2.4GHZ, Digital, automatic turn on/off, automatic channel selection, and a horizontal or vertical base station.
The sound quality is excellent. It performs like wired phones without any static or noise regardless of head position, movement, or distance from the base unit. The frequency response and balance are perfect for DVD's. To work properly however, you should connect the base unit directly to the R/L outputs on the TV and change the audio output setting from "variable" to "fixed". This allows the headphone volume control full range separate for the TV's volume setting.
My only negative comment regards the plastic parts used in these headphones. Plastic parts can produce mechanical sounds that you can hear when adjusting the headband or phones. I assume, many wireless sets may have the same problem.
DVD music tracks sound great on this wireless unit. However, no wireless set can equal wired headphones for audiophile enjoyment. When I listen to my CD's I still use my Sony MDR-V6's bought in early 1990's. They remain the best phones I ever used. So good in fact that I have a second set held in reserve.
