Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-XD200 Stereo Headphones

Customer Review: Best headphones I've ever bought! and now my new favorite speakers!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am somewhat of an audiophile. I have a large 6.1 channel home theater system, with each 150-watt real speaker (not "satellite" speakers) covering the full range of human hearing. But sometimes it can get exhausting listening to that type of sound for too long. Most of the time I find myself only using it for an hour at a time.

These headphones, however, are *VERY* enjoyable to listen on. I can listen to these for hours! And they are *sooo* comfortable you ENJOY putting them on! Seriously! The sound range they cover is just right for my ears. There are no high, piercing sounds, and also no extremely low, rumbling, exaggerated bass. The bass is quick and accentuated. And the mid-range is excellent; because that is REALLY where most of the sound IS!!! Not like with most speakers, where the sound all seems to be distortedly forced into the extreme highs and lows!!

Summary of features:

-These headphones are **extremely** comfortable!
-They block out most ambient noise (but they are not noise-cancelling which can cost you a bundle and are ONLY necessary for flying)
-VERY detailed sound and punchy, accentuated bass (not exaggerated, rumbling bass)
-nice broad and detailed range
-no high, piercing sounds (this may be a minus for some people, but certainly not for me!)
-strong mid-range

Bottom line: I am buying TWO of these. Yes, TWO!!! Not because I need two--I don't need two at all!--but because they are so great I want to have a backup pair for later on down the road.

There is one small critique I have, I just noticed after I got a short hair cut: The top headband could use a foam pad or something, but this is only if you have really short hair.

Customer Review: Sony MDR-XD200 is 10x way better than the Sennheiser HD 202
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought both and did my own listening test.

Sony MDR-XD200 MDRXD200
the sound is rich and immersive. mp3 files sound really good. it hides the mp3 artifacts for low quality files. voices sound very perfect and deep with great range. the letter s and the letter f are wet it does not sound like a whistle. I can listen to youtube videos. which are low quality. and still feel like they are high quality. basically the sony makes low quality files sound high quality and rich and very very rich which is amazing. It has a bigger more comfortable cup. The only drawback is that it doesn't block outside noise. overall the sony is more comfortable and I can wear it for longer periods and the loudness of the volume is very moderate and comfortable. for example. I could put the volume really high and still be able to listen to it without feeling annoyed.

Sennheiser HD 202 HD202
the sound is more live and near. not as immersive. you can clearly hear mp3 artifacts. in fact even high quality mp3 files sound pitched with squeekiness. voices sound too squeeky clear. the letter s and the letter f are heard in a high end pitch. like the letter s is more squeeky and not wet. it sounds like someone is blowing a whistle into your year which I don't like. the only benefit the HD 202 has is that it is a closed cup so outside noise is muffled out. It has a smaller cup compared to the sony. the sennheiser at loud volumes sounds annoying.

I also got J2 earbuds and koss clipon sports earpads which I both didn't like. The Sony MDR-XD200 is by far the best.

Customer Review: Adding a few more details
Summary: 5 Stars

T. Woodard's review is excellent. I just want to add a few more details from my buying experience.

If you research this pair of headphones on Sony's (the manufacturer) web site, it seems to indicate that it's about a 1m (~3 ft.) cord, with a 2m extension for a total of about 10 ft. of cord. That is not the case. The product I received has a single, long, 10 ft. cord.

I'm sure the headband was designed to make the whole unit more lightweght, but boy, I sure take care with the two thin strips of plastic which hold the left and right sides together.

However, these are minor details compared to the incredible sound that I got. My previous best-sounding headphones was an ancient, 20-year old pair of Sony MDR-V2. I have mostly had light headphones with foam earpads, and the little earbuds that came with my cell phone.

Compared to these, the MDR-XD200 reproduces amazing bass from the 40mm drivers. There are low ranges of songs that I never noticed before, and they make me want to listen to my entire music collection over again because it feels like I'll be hearing things for the first time. It's like when you're at high altitude, and the pressure is affecting your ears, then you move down to normal altitude, your ears clear, and you can hear better? That's what it feels like listening to these headphones over anything I've previously used.

Now the real kicker: all this great sounds for $20! To get any better sound, you'd have to start at $50, and can quickly work your way up to $200.

Customer Review: High-quality headphones.
Summary: 5 Stars

These headphones are simply awesome, just for those who want to read a short review:

+ They are very comfortable. I used them for hours and they didn't hurt my hears like other types of headphones.
+ Cable is long. Very long. I did not measured it but it's almost as double or triple the length of standard headphones.
+ Sound quality is amazing. I love the bass and these headphones emphasize the bass sounds very well. Simply put, if you love surround sound, you'll love these.
+ The size is quite big. If you look at the sample pictures they don't look as big, but be wary, these are some serious sized headphones. Not recommended for those looking for something "portable".
+ The Price. From the quality of sound to the quality of the product, every cent you spent on these headphones is well worth it. And at its current price, you're getting a great deal.
- Does not reduce noise. At least not fully. You can still hear people talking clearly even with music playing. Either way, this is no big deal to me but I added it because I know to some people this is a somewhat important factor.

Sound 10/10 (Very impressive)
Quality 9/10 (Some plastic components look kind of cheap)
Comfortability 9/10 (Really comfortable)
Size 8/10 (Not portable friendly)
Value 10/10 (Great headphones for a low price)
Overall 9/10

Like some previous customer said, they are indeed awesome, but not perfect.

Customer Review: Pretty Good
Summary: 5 Stars

Ok, first thing to point out here: These headphones are not my primary ones.

Now, the only purpose this headphones have is for me to listen exclusively to my guitar when it is plugged to the computer during night hours. I bought them because of the price (I wasn't going to spend $100 on headphones I seldom use) and because I needed something capable of giving a good bass.

The good: They are really comfortable, And the sound quality is really more than what I expected. They weigh about half a pound, which is really light. There is a switch in the headphones that, after thorough research and testing, only limits the bass and lower treble, but is useful for watching movies, as it gives the illusion of enhancing voices. Another plus is that the cord is long (138 in exactly).

The not so good: The volume limit is low. This, off course, derives from the fact that the bigger the headphones, the more energy it takes to make them work, and when not using top-notch materials, you get a lower volume limit. This is listed in the "not so good" instead of the "bad" section because they sound loud enough (I don't listen in the maximum volume anyways), but some people just like it loud.

The bad: The switch makes an awful sound when you "switch" it while having it on.
