Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDRQ22LP Ear ClipCustomer Review: The Best Sounding, Durable and Cheap Headphones Out There Summary: 5 Stars
I had a pair of these when I was in high school and they lasted for about eight years before they finally wore out from constant use. I got a different kind of headphones in which the cord was retractable. However, they did not last even a year before it was worn out. The sound became atrocious within months of constant use. I got these in 2009 and I am so happy with them because they are not going bad like the other ones.
Sound: I give the sound a 5/5 because they are the best sounding headphones I have ever had. The sound is clear and loud enough that I do not have to turn the volume all the way up or strain to hear what is playing like I have had to with other headphones. The headphones sound better than my laptop speaker and almost as good as my iHome iPod speakers. Two years after buying them and they sound the same.
Comfort: I give them a 4/5 because the part against your ear is padded so it feels fine. However, there is plastic which wraps around your ear to hold the headphone to your ears. I've worn my headphones for four hours once and my ears did hurt a little from the plastic rubbing on them. I would like for them to have some padding around the plastic, rubber or fabric would be nice. But this won't stop me from buying these headphones again when, in a few years, they wear out from my abuse... er, use.
Style: A 5/5 is what I give the style. I like that you can change the color of the headphones from silver to blue. I prefer the blue anyways. I think that the customizability is a nice feature even though it's just a cover. The mixture of silver, light/medium grey and blue makes it attractive to look at. If you are looking for something that sounds great and looks nice, then this model is for you.
Cord: This gets a 4/5 because, frankly, over five feet of cords gets annoying at times. When you are walking in a store the cord gets caught on something or it gets tangled with your iPod and the headphone gets ripped off of your ear. If there was a way to make the cord shorter without it being retractable, that would be nice. I tried using a garbage bag tie, but I quickly lost it, so I just do my best to mind the cord. This is annoying, but the sound quality is the best, so it is worth the aggravation.
Cost: Many headphones I have looked at are very pricey, so I give this model a 5/5 because they are fairly cheap. Twenty bucks seems pretty fair to me. I got them on sale for $15.47 but I would have paid the full price because these headphones are that good.
Wear and Tear: This gets a 5/5. I use the headphones nearly everyday anywhere from a half an hour to four hours and the sound quality stays the same. I have had these for two years and they sound the same as the day I got them. I have dropped the headphones and I have constantly wrapped them around my iPod, and neither the headphones nor the cord have broken from this rough treatment. The headphones are sturdy.
Overall they get a 5/5 since these headphones are pretty darn good (despite the annoyingly long cord) at a cheap price that will last you years even with constant abuse... I mean use.
Customer Review: Surprised by sound quality, value and durability! Summary: 5 Stars
Before I became "an audiophile," I simply loved to listen to sounds (music, books on tape or CD, nature and such) and have it sound good. When I bought my first CD/MP3 player, things changed. I didn't know what the problem was and it took a long time to figure it out:
The CD/MP3 players are horribly under-powered! But I bet you knew that.
All the headphones I had previously used and been very happy with just didn't seem to work any longer and the Sony MDR-Q22LP was my first foray into the world of upgrading because I HAD to rather than because I WANTED to. Big difference!
These are great little spring-action supra-aural (on the ear) headphones. They are not Sennheisers and they are not Grados and they are not the few models of Koss out there that deserve positive reviews such as the PortaPros or even the Spark Plugs (they sound better than the Spark Plugs in my opinion). But they have a very low impendence of only 24 Ohms with a fantastic range for the price and they are so comfortable that you can conceivably fall asleep in them. I have!
Sometimes Audiophiles get so caught up in names, models, who says what that we forget that the reason we became Audiophiles in the first place is because we love pleasing sounds. If you have a specific purpose in mind, these might not be for you. But if you want a pair of basic headphones that are reliable, have good sound for the money (I actually paid 19 dollars for mine at the time), are very durable, you can work out in, do the dishes while listening through them and so on, you may just find that you need look no further. If you don't have like a band around your head, same thing. If you need to block ambient noise out or you are looking for sound stage quality, I recommend looking to Grado, Sennheiser and a few models of Koss.
In the end, you need to weigh what you need a pair of headphones for vs. their cost and their features. Just because someone else has had a good experience with them doesn't necessarily mean you will. He/she might have had no ambient noise to block out but you absolutely NEED that feature. The Sennheiser PX-200 is a great choice. Perhaps you are true audiophile and so you automatically look down on these tiny cans. But I guess I have just enough music lover in me to know that these are good cans for a great price and they will make the right people happy. I have numerous other cans, including the ones mentioned above but I have found that for books on tapes, the Sony MDR-Q22LP are in my top three for listening to them! I like them and just because I have supposedly "audiophile" cans now doesn't mean I've stopped liking them. The truth is that for some needs they beat some $60-$80 cans. I hope this review helps.
Customer Review: Great cheap headphones. Summary: 5 Stars
These are great headphones if you want some cheap ones that have decent sound. Currently, I'm on my 2nd pair of these. I had the 1st pair for a few years and the wear and tear finally got to them (they never broke) so I went and bought the 2nd pair. I love these. They are pretty comfortable and lightweight and I can wear them for a long time before having to take them off. What I really like about these is how good of sound they have. For $20 headphones (they are $20 in most stores), the sound is amazing. They respond better to higher frequencies (guitars, etc.) but you can still hear treble and bass pretty well, especially for being as cheap as they are. I have a set of Bose Triport OEs as my good headphones. Bose is overpriced (especially on the Sound dock ipod stereos) but not necessarily overrated. My OEs are pretty comfortable and have good sound. I use the Sony headphones for more everyday things as they are cheaper and more durable.
The one drawback about these Sony headphones is that the cord has a tendency to tangle up really easily and is pretty long (around 4-5 ft.).
Another good thing about these headphones is you can still hear people a little bit when you are using the headphones, so you can tell when someone's talking to you.
By the way, these headphones have a short cord connecting them. This cord is supposed to go across the back of your neck so that you can keep them around your neck when you're not using them. Also, I just read some of the 1 and 2 star reviews about these and thought I should clarify something: the part about how they make your ears bend or deform. This is true, however, once you learn to put them on correctly, they are secure, stay on, and they don't bend your ears. When I got the 1st pair, the headphones bent my ears down too. I was going to return them to Best Buy, but then I figured out how to put them on correctly. When you put them on, press the back of each one towards your head just a tiny bit. When you have them on right, the ear clip should be resting against the side of your head. If they're bending your ears or if they feel like they're going fall off, most likely you will notice that the ear clip is not entirely resting against the side of your head.
The bottom line: if you're looking for some cheap headphones that are comfortable and have decent or better sound and that are durable enough for everyday use, then these are for you. I highly recommend these.
Customer Review: Best headphones I've ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
These are absolutely excellent in all facets. They fit snugly and comfortably (there's a trick to getting them on just right), they sound as good as plenty of $50+ sets I've used, and they are extremely durable. I bought my first set of these in 2004, and liked them so much I bought two more. I still have all three sets. The foam covers rotted and disintegrated from the moisture and abuse I put them through, but they still work 100% and sound as good as new. I've tied the cords in knots, gotten them soaking wet, even muddy, dropped and crushed and beaten, and they just take it all. The gold plated connector keeps the sound clean and clear despite all this, and the cord, though you might think it flimsy, is actually far more durable than the standard kind. The bass response in these is unbelievable for passive speakers, and they won't ruin your ears as bad as ear buds. As others have noted, sound does leak out, but if you put them on right, they will sound great and plenty loud for you.
The trick to putting these on right is to hold the clips open all the way, place them on your ears, rotate the phones forward on your ears slightly, then letting the clips do the tightening. They fit snugly yet comfortably, and sound great. I also wear glasses, and these don't interfere. I have worn these in all weather, wet and dry, kept them in a backpack full of books, and even worn them to bed on a daily basis. You can't beat these at this price point, and you won't be disappointed in the quality of this set.
Customer Review: Good price, good features Summary: 5 Stars
When I bought my iPod, I was looking for something other than the earbuds, which tend to fall out of my ears whenever I turn my head too fast. I also wanted something more portable than the traditional headphones, something I could shove into a crowded backpack without fear that the plastic connecting the two earpieces would snap in two. These headphones fit the bill. You just clip them right onto your ears and go. You don't have to worry about them falling off. They're compact and durable. I've had mine for almost two years now, and even with frequent use the sound quality is still pretty much the same as it was when I bought them. They're also great for sharing music with a friend--one earpiece for each person.
The interchangeable caps are a nice feature. You can have blue, silver, or one of each. I had the blue caps for a while, but one of them kept falling off. I eventually lost it and had to replace it with a silver cap, which seems to fit better. This is also the way they come in the package. I was a little annoyed that I lost a cap, but the different colors does make it easier to immediately tell the left from the right.
The only thing I didn't like about them is that the cord runs to the left earpiece, and then another cord from the left to the right, instead of the usual Y-shaped cord where the left and right meet in the middle. However, a small piece of electrical tape fixed that for me, right at the place where the left and right would meet to form a Y.
