I wanted to replace my old small stereo system that I use for background music in the kitchen with a unit that can play FM stations and MP3s as well as CDs. We were not interested in playing cassettes. We listen primarily to classical with occasional easy listening instrumental, country, or folk music. The unit sounds great for its size: crisp clean highs and mid-range, and excellent bass that can be far too strong and booming unless one sets the equalization at "flat" and turns off the dynamic equalization. Those who love table shaking bass would not be disappointed with the Dynamic Equalization on, but "flat" is excellent for realistic symphony and vocalist sounds including opera. The high frequencies are well dispersed giving a large listening area. The unit sounds clean and balanced at low volume levels, which is admirable, and will play at quite loud levels with minimal distortion. It reads MP3 disks without a hitch and does not appear to be media sensitive. The unit has only 4 pre-programmed equalization settings; they are not user adjustable. I have tried at least 4 types of CD-R media, some media as slow as 10X and some as fast as 54X; no problems. The remote is very functional and not very complex making it easy to use. All controls are also available on the unit itself, making it easy to use without the remote. The unit appears to be solidly made with excellent fit and finish.
This would be an excellent unit for a small apartment or moderate sized rooms. The sound cannot compare with large studio monitors, but is excellent for the price. I highly recommend this unit and would definitely choose it again for an inexpensive stereo for a small to moderate sized room setting.

This stereo is the best I've ever had. Sony delivers awesome sound and a low price. The remote is easy to use and the stereo itself is very user friendly. It's small, but has a lot of power. If I had to find something wrong with it, it would only be that the CD changer is a little noisy when it's swapping discs. You can hear the trays trundle back and forth. Not a big deal, really, because that has nothing to do with the awesome sound you get from this amazing stereo.
Here's the best part... In the front there is a 1/8th inch (3.5mm) audio jack that you can plug your mp3 into. I got a 6ft audio cable for this ( because it doesn't come with one ) and all I do now is play my music from my mp3, rather than using CDs. Just turn the mp3's volume up all the way and control the sound from the main volume on the stereo. I also use the same audio input with my laptop and I can listen to music from youtube or any online radio I want. I also am a musician and I do my recording on my laptop. So, this stereo also serves as my studio monitor speakers. I've even plugged it into my LCD tv's headphone jack, and can now get amazing stereo sound while watching my favorite DVDs.
My recommendation is to purchase a good, and long, 3.5mm audio cable when you get this stereo. You may not has a use for it yet, but they are cheap, and when you start finding ways to use it, you'll be glad you already have one.

An incredible system for the cost-- and the sound quality is awesome for the compact size! Could not believe it when the first disc started playing; wish I had that before I spent the money on the Bose system a few years ago. This was a Christmas gift for my sister and her husband who have taken my Mom in to live with them; we were all fans of Henry Mancini as kids and when I took the stereo out of the box and started a Mancini disc for Mom she started smiling and crying at the same time for the wonderful memories it brought back to her. And just as a side remark; she tends to have dementia and becomes confused and sometimes very lonesome for my Dad; my sister now plays "her music" everyday and it seems to have relaxed Mom and makes her very happy.....music therapy! Also I must commend Amazon.com for the unheard of customer service; I ordered this stereo on a Thursday morning and it had arrived the following day when I got home from work! If you are looking for a solid sound and solid setup, this player offers terrific value--better, in fact, than anything I found in the research leading up to this purchase.
I love the way I can hit the highest volume to play the full range of my cd's--and not a whit of distortion.
By the way, I'm not a geek, not an electronic whiz, but I managed to put everything together without any help. My only complaint is that the directions could use clearer setup instructions. The directions differentiate between two models, and I always find that sort of additional info unnecessary and slightly confusing. Would it really cost Sony that much more to separate the instructions?
Anyway, back to my original comment: I love the sound (not tinny, not thin). Warning: As some have mentioned, the units are larger than you think, so plan your spot beforehand. I had to change my spot once the player arrived.

I was looking for some super speakers to blast while I work out and I stumbled upon the Sony MHC-EC55 Mini Hi-Fi Component System (jeez, that was a long title). Everything works pretty well: radio is fine, 3 disc changer works well, and most important of all, the "audio in" works magnificiently. The "audio in" allows me to connect my ipod to the speakers, which is the main feature for which I purchased this awesome product. There are no flaws that I can spot or that annoy me with this product. One last thing, the volume goes up to 30, which is plenty loudness for most people's needs and the remote works great, too. Any who, the product greatly satisfies my needs and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a speaker system that can play your cds, your ipod, and your favorite radio stations with great overall sound and loudness in the comfort of your home or anywhere else you want to take these semi-colossal speakers.
