Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MHCEC68Pi Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Digital Media Port and 140-Watts RMS (Silver)Customer Review: Pretty good for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I got this system because my old Pioneer 300+1 CD changer is dying by inches. It's getting very fussy about what CDs it will read; I can't realistically afford to get that many SHM-CDs, and the changer will probably deteriorate anyway, seeing as how I bought it just a little over ten years ago. I almost got the more recent model of my CD changer, but one of the reviewers said that it wouldn't read some CDs, so I decided to try and keep up with the times, even though I'm turning into a geezer with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel ;).
This system is what I settled on, once I ascertained that I could use MP3 players other than an IPod with it.
The radio works fine on both AM and FM. I played a CD in it, and it sounded very nice. Right now I'm playing my Sony 16GB Walkman through it, and the sound is again very good. My only complaint (and it's not much of a complaint, really), is that it seems a touch light on the bass end. But that's not really much of a problem unless I'm playing it louder than I normally would, so I'm not making a great issue of it.
I did notice when I was setting it up that the instructions referred to some features as applying only to the EC-68pi with Subwoofer; I wish I had been able to get that one, as it looks like that might be the answer to the (slight) bass deficiency with this system. For whatever reason, I haven't seen that variant available on Amazon. That's not a huge problem, because if I want to crank it up I can just put in the earbuds and listen to my Walkman on its own.
The system was also very easy to set up, with no confusing language in the instructions. Once I got it set up, I found the controls logically arranged and fairly easy to figure out
The only question mark now is how this system will stand the test of time. I only set it up yesterday, so I have no idea as to how it will stand up to the continual use it's going to get while in my possession (I don't watch television...). I know my fifteen-year-old Sony receiver is still working, so I'm hoping for similar luck with this gadget.
Customer Review: Sounds Good Summary: 4 Stars
I wanted a stereo that was louder then a clock radio but smaller then my home stereo. I also wanted to be able to plug in my MP3 player. There weren't a lot of units to chose from so I went with Sony. The stereo sounds good even when cranked up. It's definitely louder then any portable CD player or iPod dock that I've heard. The only drawbacks are that it's not "portable", the speakers don't attach to the stereo. Also, the Digital Media port only fits iPods. There's an "audio in" port for other MP3 players but I had to buy an adapter.
EDIT: 4-15-09 I just saw the Sony with the Subwoofer at Walmart for $20 less then 'zon. Buyers beware.
